Discord the next Tumblr

Jumballi

Summary

In a push, possibly to appease apple, Discord is adding the option to mark entire servers as NSFW, and users on ios will no longer have access to those servers. This is the second social media platform that's done as significant a push to hide and remove pornographic content since Tumblr wiped porn from it's site in a push to remove child pornography.

Discord is making some changes to how it handles NSFW servers, and it will have a particular effect on users of the iOS application. The company says that Discord for iOS will now block all NSFW servers, potentially because of Apple’s App Store guidelines around adult content.

My thoughts

As an IOS user, this makes it very hard to moderate servers where we might mark it as NSFW to block children. This is similar to how Tumblr lost nearly all of it's value, however the content appears to still be up if you want access it on a PC, browser or Android app.
It's a little unclear if it's whole servers that'll be removed, or anything marked NSFW, as there's some conflicting reports, but most say just NSFW servers.

To be fair if you want to watch porn, why are you searching on discord?

not everyone wants to look at videos though. Some just like sharing pics and art they like, and places like old tumblr and current discord are great for that

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Nope, you're getting it wrong.

And it's VERY different from what happened to Tumblr.

Tumblr:  Yahoo Bought Tumblr and outright BANNED all Adult Content.  It got deleted, Blocked, or otherwise went inaccessible.

Discord:  NSFW Servers will be blocked from the iOS App.

Discord on the Web, Desktop, And Android will remain unaffected.  Your Porn is still on Discord.

Except Discord doesn't, there's countless servers where either bots or users share NSFW content and it's allowed, there's a reason Discord allows you to mark text channels as NSFW.

whatever about the title

in a sense they could. discord allows nsfw on it's platform. now, they have things that check to make sure it's not cp or anything. theoretically, if you're reporting someone for sharing either child exploitation type content, or for sharing nsfw where it's not appropriate, they could be banned or otherwise face some punishment (temp account suspension, warning to cease from a behaviour etc.)

I think it's more we'd all just like Twitter to ban the actually illegal stuff, not go to court to be allowed to leave it up.

Twitter is that disappoint of a cousin no one talks about if they can avoid it.

Not even remotely the same. This is apple banning porn and nudity, not discord.

Yeah, when is Twitter going to be taken down or forced to implement no-NSFW on iOS? It's totally not like Twitter has become the replacement for Tumblr or anything....

I have to side with EA now. 3rd party app stores should be allowed on iOS devices.

Twitter is awash in hate speech. The entire platform could be nuked from orbit and the collective IQ of humanity would increase thereafter.

Do you even use Discord?

Most servers usually have one or more of the three kinds of channels

a) Fanart (SWF)

b) Lewd art (NSWF)

c) Blatant piracy (Copyright infringement)

Now in general, I haven't seen that much, but it's well known that discord's ability to stream video/screenshare makes a sneaky way to have disposable streams, and youtube/twitch streamers regularly use them to show content that would get them banned from Twitch or Youtube.

I haven't seen any blatant porn (of real people) on these servers, but all UGC (User Generated Content) has a bad habit of poor moderation eventually leading to risky content being posted without penalty, because the people who might know better, don't care or don't want to care.

Discord, if it wants to survive, needs to hire actual human moderators to visit discords, even if nothing has been reported and casually check channels for NSWF content for this to have any weight to it. Or you know, people will just troll ANY discord, post a tiddy pic from a sockpuppet account, and hit report to get the entire server in trouble.

As we say on Discord and on Twitch, if someone says "I'm 12, what is this", your immediate response should be "Goodbye", and banning from the channel. Don't even think about it. If you hesitate, someone's going to report it and the channel is in trouble.

One shouldn't need to be entirely serious and joke-free on the internet, but there are certain jokes that are TOS "report me" bait, and you should know better.

Anyway Tumblr's fanart purge as a consequence Yahoo/Verizon buying it, and subsequently destroying Tumblr. It's what happens when a company acquires another company without any understanding of why the business works (see also News Corp's ownership of Myspace.) Patreon has come "this close" to doing the exact same stupid actions in order to appease Paypal/Visa.

Really, I think we just need to get over the idea that a "child-safe" walled garden can be sex-free any while still having any level of violent content. s/ They are fundamentally intertwined in the US, and anything that bans images of cartoon breasts should also ban images of cartoon guns s/.

You understand getting rid of twitter wouldn't get rid of hate speech, right? I've never understood this logic of blaming a *platform* for hate speech and not the actual people making hate speech.

I get that, but it's definitely a conduit for that behavior in concentration.

I find it cringeworthy that anyone finds use out of that platform. 😖

Apple has a clear rule on NSFW content where if it’s adult it needs to have a toggle in either the website or in settings.bubdle of the app (like Reddit). However Discord wants to cater to 13+ and has inadequate measures to prevent exposure to nsfw content for those below 17+. As a measure they could have disabled the option absolutely for those above 13+ , while exposing the toggle to 17+. Instead they chose to outright ban it.

As for porn in safari, if you have parental settings on then such contents are inaccessible but not so for Discord. This has happened to me and my younger brother who tapped on an invite of a NSFW channel unknowingly and saw such contents.

That’s a good point. Maybe this is why the Twitter app on iOS directs users to the browser to change the permission to view NSFW content. But it’s not just Twitter. Snapchat is used for NSFW content a lot. Somehow that’s allowed too.

Apps like Twitter and Reddit can show NSFW content because they abide by Apple's developer guidelines. Whether you agree with them or not, as of right now the App Store is the only mainstream way of App delivery on iOS, so developers have to abide by it.

NSFW content is allowed on iOS only if the toggle switch is done through a web client and not through iOS. Directly from the guidelines, "it may display incidental mature “NSFW” content, provided that the content is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website." Both Twitter and Reddit require you to toggle NSFW content through a web browser, but Discord doesn't. They could easily go around this and implement the same workaround, but they don't.

Leads me to wonder if they want to drop the 17+ app rating for a 12+ app rating, especially with the acquisition with Microsoft possibly coming up. On that rating, no NSFW content can be displayed regardless of age.
