As part of IFS, Intel will both offer raw manufacturing services, similar to a standard foundry like TSMC and Samsung, as well as its portfolio of IP to customers. This is a Big Deal™. Intel will enable a fully vertical model with its IP portfolio, allowing customers to choose from x86 cores, graphics, media, display, AI, interconnect, fabric, packaging, and other critical foundational IP from other sources (such as Arm, RISC-V). The exact way in which customers will be able to license the IP will be announced in due course, but if Intel were to follow the Arm model, then Intel customers will get access to Intel’s 86 core designs.

 

Arm’s model is bidirectional: core IP and architecture IP. The first allows you to build an SoC with defined cores, while the latter allows you to build your own cores with the instruction set (like Apple does with Arm). When applied to Intel, with the core IP, a customer can build designs based on Intel’s x86 cores with their own or external interconnects, or in different configurations to Intel’s standard model that are more optimized for what that particular customer requires. At the minute Intel is set only to offer core IP licenses, not architecture IP licenses.

 

If we take this idea and extrapolate, we could very well see x86 cores combined with new memory controllers, active interposers with custom interconnects.

All-in-all, Pat Gelsinger is enabling a roadmap that allows Intel to pivot, and pivot hard. Steering the Intel behemoth is difficult at the best of times, however Pat’s arrival and enthusiasm has certainly made the company more comfortable in finding where its next generation of revenue is coming from.

It looks like Intel is aiming to offer TSMC/Samsung/GloFlo-style foundry capacity to clients wanting orders of custom x86 and RISC processors by 2023 and maybe even FPGA, MIPS, Power, analog, and other kinds of architectures later on.

 

So........my iPhone, laptop, eGPU, PS5, PC, Tesla, Roomba, and AR glasses might all soon have Intel Inside®?

Intel vs. competition node density: 22nm = 16nm, 14nm+++ = 10nm, 10nm = 7nm, 7nm = 5nm, 5nm = 3nm, etc., etc.

Foundry services is interesting.  Would have had to happen since they don’t have an industry leading node anymore. I’m a bit surprised it didn’t happen earlier.   The design arm of intel may have to go elsewhere to make competitive CPUs which leaves capacity available.  We’ll see what happens if/when they do again.  Anyone who uses them though is going to have to design for their node which takes time, and intel may be really close to getting an industry leading node back.  If I was going to contract with intel I’d want a multi year deal so I could at least get my chips built.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Fortunately, lots of processes prefer a higher nanometer because of the cheaper cost like car electronics, micro controllers, etc. These processes don't need to have state of the art efficiency and are still experiencing a shortage currently because all of the world's fabs are running at 100% capacity.

Just keeping this here as a I would be genuinely interested to find out at what percentage of capacity Intel's fabs are running at.  For all the complaining we enthusiasts have about their 14nm+++++ manufacturing process, they still make competitive products and dominate prebuilds and laptops. That being said, demand is starting to shift away from them towards AMD and their other competitors, plus their fabs have had plenty of time to mature/grow and become as efficient as possible while TSMC and Samsung don't have these advantages.

Not that I'm assuming it would happen, but it would be ironic if Intel became known as a contract manufacturer for Apple chips. In the same way that Samsung can make more money from iPhones than its own Galaxy devices because it has crucial parts deals.

I could actually see Apple doing that where possible just to appease intel.  It would have some advantages for its US manufactured stuff if there actually even is any.  They were talking about opening a plant at one point in the US but I’m not sure what actually came of it.  They can’t do that for CPUs currently because intel doesn’t have a small enough node.  Might be other chips they could do it for.

When I meant “dominate” I wasn’t referring to performance, I was talking about total laptops/desktops shipped with Intel chips inside. While most tech people like us care about specs and raw performance, manufacturers have other considerations chief among them availability. If memory serves, Microsoft had issues with getting enough chips for the surface laptop 3 which was powered by an AMD processor.

 

Will this change in the future? Probably not anytime soon. If AMD is having issues stocking their desktop cpus then I seriously have reason to doubt if they can make it in the laptop market.

Why would an iPhone need a T2 chip when there’s the secure enclave coprocessor ever since the iPhone 5s (A7)? At the end of the day even an iPhone (which isn’t all they make) is more than a cpu, a battery, and screen.  T2 was just what I thought of off hand.  I think it likely some stuff could be found that they would need besides CPUs.  T2 is actually an old phone cpu processor anyway.   There’s no potential trap there. Maybe they’d need parts for that Siri speaker or something.  It doesn’t matter.

Mindshare doesn't matter as much as people like to make it out to be. The largest majority of laptop buyers only care about a few thing

  1. OS
  2. Screen size
  3. Storage amount

CPU brand matters as much to the normal consumer as tire brand matters when buying a car.

 

AMD will get more market share just by getting their CPUs in more products, but that is purely because of volume reasons not mindshare.

almost every single one of my friend came up to me who wants me to config a pc or asks for laptop recommendation wants an intel cpu, some would change to AMD after my recommendations, some would still want intel regardless of whether it suits their needs or not

I don't have a problem with this.. Intel makes good stuff. At least they have the capability to make stuff.. unlike some "other" guys.
