What if you could have the power of a full windows PC in a device the size of your palm, or at least the size of a Nintendo Switch? Aya definitely has you covered… but the experience isn't perfect.

It is in their advertising contracts to put it first. Also why the pinned comment on YT is also probably a link to their sponsor. Practically every company sponsoring a youtuber with a dedicated portion of the video being an ad will demand to have their link placed first in the description and pinned in the comments.

I mean my $400 phone has a higher resolution display in a smaller size. If a Snapdragon 855 can drive a 1080p display, a Ryzen chip should have no problem doing so.

If you want to conserve battery, give the user a choice to turn down the resolution. It's not a laptop, but god forbid you do anything else like watching a movie from it.

Its a fucking handheld, 7 inches is actually a little big for some people. And building such a tiny x86 system, especially as an indie hardware dev, is downright expensive. Also it is 800p, not 720p. They didn't want smartphone level pixel densities, so they cheaped out and went with a reasonable 800p.

You are seriously asking a young breakout hardware developer to offer some sort of scroll wheel or drop down menu to easily adjust the resolution at any time. Or maybe the indie dev can save a lot of money by getting an 800p screen for their crowdfunded project.

Cut the devss a break, they are a fucking crowdfunded project, they aren't being given any sort of corporate backing. They only have as much money to spend as they do backers. Also such a dial would seriously break a lot of games running in full screen mode, and would likely require working with the game devs to add compatibility, depending on the game's engine.

Samsung or any big smartphone maker can get a contract for million of low quality 1080p screens for their $400 androids, but that would be impossible for a crowdfunded project. Linus actually complemented the decent pixel density. No need for 1080p on a sub 7 inch screen, just ridiculous unless you are holding it up to your face. Not recommended for a fat handheld console.

Give one to Wendell at Level1Techs. He'll put Linux on it and it'll be a much better experience for it 😉

I have no problem with them linking their sponsor first, it annoys me that at 0% of their videos they forget to link their sponsor, yet i have to to see just one video where they say, and the link to xy is in the description and it ACTUALLY is. Of course this doesn't effect views or subscribers, it just shows that the community is not priority number one, since they always forget to link to the not sponsered product.

So the cheapest option starts from 699, yet the option of "backing the project" give us 869 for 1....... whahhhh?

Weird pricing aside, the line where Linus goes "pricing similar to GPD" is whats really triggering me a bit - similar product with some stuff fixed and problems compared to the GPD line and in the end the price is the same - way too high (for me!).

Anybody got information on how much 1 of these MD Ryzen 5 4500U would cost? Just for information......

Speaking of typing on consoles, I've had this idea since playing the first "Beyond Good and Evil" (2004 or 5).  the way you do text entry in that, with enhancements, would make for a good joystick OSK.  in BG&E, when typing, you use the stick to select your letter by rotating a letter ring, then tapping a button to select.  very basic, and enough for the game itself, but an absolute leap over the regular up/down/left/right you'd have to on every other on-screen joystick keyboard there is (XBOne's OSK, AndroidTV's OSK, Amazon Prime Video's Set top abomination, any others like them), even without the enhancements I have in mind.  I came up with this sketch ~2005, and only just found it again while cleaning my desk about a week ago.  I'l be cleaning this up in inkscape soon.

You will likely be holding it a foot or more away from your face so at that range you wont be able to see individual pixels so all you would be doing with a higher resolution display is wasting battery power, making it harder to run your games at a good FPS and increasing the cost of the device. Bigger numbers are not always better.

Not sure why this hasn't been brought up yet, but the split screen keyboard used on the Surface Go (and Surface RT originally) is a pretty good native keyboard solution for typing. I can even use it lying down on a sofa resting my arms and type with it quite comfortably.

Maybe not for doing a 2-3 page Word doc, but certainly usable for punching out a piece like this in a pinch.

Maybe that 8 inch screen size is the sweet spot. I'm wondering why they haven't considered doing a "thicker" Surface Go type device with beefier hardware/battery under the hood. It would certainly be doable, and I for one would gladly jump at a handheld gaming device that I could also use with Steam streaming.

Cool. I always wanted a pocket size Windows PC like the old days. Hope they come out with a keyboard attachment.
