You're probably thinking of Proshop and no, that's not what happened at all.

Here is the thread but please read it VERY carefully. People are throwing around numbers that they pulled out of their asses in that thread, a lot.

 

Basically, Proshop had around 4000 customers that had ordered 30 series graphics cards.

Proshop put in an order from Nvidia/MSI/ASUS/GIGABYTE/Etc for over 11,000 graphics cards. I can't remember how many cards ProShop had actually received but of course it was way less than 11,000. It was less than 4,000 as well but the point I was making in that thread is that all stores all over the world are currently trying to over-stock 30 series graphics cards because for them it's basically like ordering money. All stock they can get a hold of will be sold, so it's not strange that they are ordering 

massive quantities and manufacturers can't keep up with the demand.

 

I also argued that the numbers were completely meaningless because we have no idea how many graphics cards ProShop usually sells or orders, which is very important info if we try to make some comparison against other graphic card launches.

The entire thread is basically people trying to draw conclusions that agree with their preconceived conclusions even though the data is very much incomplete.

1) It isn't the same MSRP as the 3600X. The 3600X was launched at $249.

2) The 3600X has gone down in price.

3) The 3600X was really poor value at launch as well. The X in the 3600X basically stood for "I want to donate 50 dollars to AMD for no reason".

 

If you compare the 5600X, which is poor value, against the 3600X which was also poor value then sure it doesn't look as bad, but if you instead compare it to the 3600, which was good value and people actually bought, then the 5600X suddenly becomes a really bad buy.

I mean it was worse for us on the 3000 GPU series here in Japan, it was basically by line up for lottery only on launch. Compared to today that the AMD CPUs are available for sale and we could line up for a purchase.

If you are going to buy a 6 core 12 thread CPU you got these options now:

3600 - $199 and has 96.9% performance.

3600X - $229 and has 96.9% performance.

5600X - $299 and has 100% performance.

 

And yes, the performance difference is so small between the 3600 and the 3600X that it doesn't even register as a difference in TechPowerUp's benchmarks. That's how little you gained for that extra 50 dollars and why I call it a donation.

OTOH, if you play CS:Go or Valorant you're looking at about a 20% boost in performance. If you play Civ 6 you're looking at a 18% reduction in turn times(the actual important metric when playing Civ, not FPS). If you play Total War Three Kingdoms you're looking at a 25% increase in FPS, If you play Doom Eternal, you're looking at a 22% increase in FPS. It's almost as if the games TPU uses are crap metrics or something.

The 5900X especially is such an amazing value option, i know AMD is charging a premium over their last gen CPUs but in all honesty, they can.
I think anybody waiting for Intel's next-gen CPUs on 14nm is making a big mistake, i have no idea what else Intel is gonna bring to the table.

Where are you getting those numbers from?

 

Also, even if those numbers are accurate that still means it has worse price to performance ratio than the 3600 or even the 3600X.

 

Also, those benchmarks sound very cherry picked... Maybe the issue isn't that "TPU picked the wrong games!" but rather that you are picking only the games that show the biggest increases rather than the average increase from your typical game?

Civ 6 is pretty much the gold standard of metrics for TBS games. Which is why TPU uses it. Course, they look at FPS which in a TBS game is a completely fucking useless metric. CS:GO, Valorant, and Doom:Eternal are from Hardware Canucks. Civ6 and TW:TK are extrapolated from the delta between the 5950X and 3950X since GN hasn't released their 5600X vid yet. However looking at the difference in deltas between the 5800x and 3800x vs the 5600x and 3600x for CS:Go, Valorant, COD:MW remaster, and Horizon Zero Dawn the delta only gets larger as you drop in number of cores. Which means I'm pretty damned confident in them.

 

As for the numbers being cherry picked, measuring CPU performance in GPU or game engine bound titles which all of TPUs metrics are is fucking moronic.

idk LTT's benchmarks showed 27% better performance in tombraider, 19% in ms flight simulator, 36% in csgo

and this is vs the 3600XT 

also the 5600x consistently beats intel's 10900k 

but yeah ill probably get a 5800x so i can run other programs in the background without cutting into game performance in fact im tempted to get a 5900x since its not that much more but ill control myself

Well, 5600X is a great buy if all you care is gaming and you're doing it from much older generation and not from 3600X . It's somewhat "affordable" and delivers. Personally, I'll probably just go with 5900X as I change platform somewhere between 5-6 years so I kinda want something better. Plus these parts turbo even higher by default and I kinda want that. And when you're buying system for such long term operation, you don't go for most budget parts, you go all out, but not on crazy stupid levels. It's why I went with 5820K a "high end" HEDT platform instead of at the time newer 6700K with less cores. I don't think 6700K would've served me for so long and so well. And in such long period of time, 200-300€ more basically disappears.

Actually, the price to performance is way worse than I expected.

 

At 1080p gaming the 5600X is 50% more expensive than the 3600 but only performs 8.3% better.

 

At 1440p gaming the 5600X is 50% more expensive than the 3600 but only performs 3.2% better.

 

 

The 5600X is a very, very bad buy if you are building a gaming PC. Buy a 3600 instead. Almost the same performance at way lower of a price.

If you want absolute top of the line with no regard to price-to-performance, get ryzen 5000. If you actually want to spend reasonable qnounts of money buy ryzen 3000.

 

Absolutely no place for Intel, apart from countries (like mine) where finding AMD processors for cheaper than Intel processors isn't exactly common. 

I'm not crying you are 😢
