Yes that is the point of not included the wall charger at this point we all have at least 5 USBA wall chargers and many of us also have are few USB-C wall chargers as well.

The iPad air is 40% faster than the iPad Pro. Feels like the 2080ti owners now being overtaken by the 3070.

Yup. And the only way to rectify this will be a Late 2020 or early 2021 iPad Pro refresh with A14X

The A12X/Z in the Pro will still be faster in Multi-core than the regular A14 as it's 8 core vs 6 core. 

 

Expect to see an A14X soon though...

Sorry talking about developers makes Steve Ballmer pop in to my mind. Any who once developers have things figured out Apple will be in a much better position. Which is why I think they said it was going to take 2 years before they were fully switched over.

Actually, NVIDIA did Apple and I think they really started doing it with Turing. Or was it with Pascal already? When was the last time Apple compared itself to anyone else directly? I can't remember in years and it's actually a clever marketing approach to compete with yourself instead with others. Sure Apple mentions here and there they are X faster than competition in a very broad way, but for the most part, they compare themselves to themselves. Plus it makes you look nice, unlike that guy like Intel in its last Tiger Lake event where it couldn't shut up about AMD to a point you might think they are marketing AMD not their own Intel products.

It kinda sucks that iPadOS 14 still doesn't support extending desktops to an external display just like in PC and Mac, when the chip inside is more than capable and now supports USB C.

I had to look at the headline of that youtube video i wasn't sure i was watching an intel product launch i thought i hit AMD by mistake.

I think its just the product name is such a mouthful now with all the numbers not even Intel like saying them anymore.

 

I think they need a reset on their naming instead of i9-10850K it should be i9-X850K, time to take a page out of the Apple book roman numerals?

Developers will be key, although the two-year transition is mainly because Apple needs to develop chips and architecture powerful enough to replace desktop-class Core and Xeon processors. It's easy to, say, add a couple of cores or ramp up clock speeds; it's another to scale up to the point where workstation buyers would want ARM over x86.

Their new subscription service, Apple One, looks like fantastic value for money. Music, TV and 50 gigs of storage for 14.95 would be great on its own; the addition of Arcade for iPhone users just sweetens the deal. Even as an Android user I might find Apple's offering too good to resist... (though I'm not buying an iPhone, I'll just use the Android apps which surpisingly do exist)

As one of the developers in question I can say that when it comes to supporting arm64 on macOS this is very easy for us. A lot lot simpler than supporting ARM64 on windows! 

 

The main reason being all macOS 11 system libs that we depend on for x86 are also supported on arm64 for us we don't really need to re-write anything. Even AVX code we have has a non AVX version since not all x86 systems have AVX enabled (a great example of this is when a user is running in a some VMs or the new intel mobil chips) so you always check at runtime if AVX is there and if not you simply fall back to a SIMD version.  

We have looked at trying to port our windows applications to ARM64 but that is close to impossible for us and the reason is MS are only porting a small fraction of the apis we can use on windows10 x86 to windows10 ARM. So we would need to re-write large parts of our applications (and third party libs) to make this migration. MS traditionally have never removed support for any api even when they have replaced it multiple times with newer alternatives that do the same thing. This is sort of great but also means we have never been able to tell the BiZ we need to refactor this old thing and update it since `it still works` however now with a code base that is 20+ years old the size of this refactor to get onto ARM windows is basically impossible (due to third party libs being in the same situation).

Apples approach of deprecating apis when new apis come out that replace them means yes every year (if you want to use the new SDK, and even if you stay on an older SDK you will normally only have 4 to 5 years worth of OS releases before your users cant use these apis as they are then pulled from the system) you need to fix up these things that have been removed, but its a small number since you do it every year and since it `enables` new features the product team are happy for you to do this work  this is why it is so easy for apple to support all the x86 apis on AMR64, apple just have a much much smaller number of apis to support since they `kill` off all the apis they have replaced over the years. 

 

Apples approach does mean for apps that are not maintained they tend to have a living shelf-life (if users upgrade the OS) of about 5 to 8 years before some api they depend on is fully removed.

With Windows I literally still use apps from some 19 years ago from the Windows XP era. And they work perfectly fine on Windows 10.

That cuts both ways, though. A major problem for Microsoft, not to mention the security world, is the tendency for companies and people to hang on to old versions of Windows simply because their compatibility extends that far back. A business might cling to Windows 7 because it has an XP mode that lets the company run a 25-year-old Windows NT database app.

 

This isn't to say Apple has the best strategy, but even Microsoft realized that maintaining legacy support for too long can hold an entire platform back. The ideal is somewhere in the middle.

that's what they are counting on, so that you use a non apple charger to brik the chip inside it that designed to deteriorate so that you are forced to buy their charger unlike android phones that accepts any chargers.

I also don't get the "e-waste" nonsensical arguments. How are chargers e-waste when they are universal and work with any device? Not to mention, if I sell device I always make sure it comes with original charger because that ups the resale value. If device dies and I'm left with a charger, I can still use it. I always need one at work and maybe have one as a backup and Apple's 5W chargers are excellent for that because the are so slim and tiny. Unlike my mega massive brick from RAVPower with 4 ports at home. Who ever says "um I don't need this" and just throws the charger away? Or do that if device dies and they don't hold on to it and just throw it away? Where is the waste part here? Or is it just an excuse to still sell the product at same full price while not having to make it as complete. Yeah, for a trillion dollar company, I'd say it's just that. When you're moving so many units even something as insignificant as 5W charger can make someone earn several more digits on their paycheck in the end. And you need to buy a separate charger.

 

I'd believed they care about ecology if they made the damn Apple Watch compatible with Qi charging. If they announced Apple Watch 6 with "we care about ecology" so we got rid of the charger in the box as well as proprietary magnetic cable and added Qi support on Apple Watch to make compatibility as wide a s possible, then I'd believe it. But without all those extra steps it was just a cost cutting thing that won't reflect on product in the end, but will in their own pockets.

I think I may know why Apple Watch has no Qi.  Qi is two really large antennas all wrapped up into disks set on top of each other as sender and receiver.  The disks are pretty large. Like 2+ inches across.  Much larger than a wristwatch.  They would need a different wireless standard than Qi just to make it fit.

It's stuff that's written up by marketers and accountants, of course it doesn't make sense. It's the same thing when Nintendo decided to stop including chargers for their new 3DS at one point. Apple is not even including earpods and I'm surprised no one is making a big fuss on that.
