Apple Watch Series 6

• New "health sensor" with "new abilities"
• New blood oxygen sensor that measure blood oxygen in 15 seconds.
• Can track oxygen saturation during sleep. Shows up in the health app.
• New S6 SoC that uses Thunder cores (same as the low power cores in the A13)
• Better always-on display. More efficient and 2.5x brighter than the previous generation.
• Altimeter that is always-on.
• New watch faces
• Memoji faces, if you want your clock to look horrible.
• New "solo loop" watchband. It's flexible silicon. Also available in a weave pattern (but still silicon). Looks really nice IMO.
• 20% faster charging
• 5GHz Wi-Fi support
• U1 chip with "ultra wideband" (no idea what this means yet)
• $399 for the GPS model.
• No power adapter in the box.

 

 

 

Apple Watch SE

• Same screen as the series 6.
• Same sensors as the series 6 but without the blood oxygen sensor.
• S5 SoC (same as the series 5 watch)
• $279
• No power adapter in the box.

 

 

 

Apple Fitness+

• Access to training videos.
• Will have new workouts every week.
• Integrates with Apple music (music while you workout)
• Shows different metrics like heartrate on the screen while you work out (so your Apple watch measures your heart beats for example, and shows it in the corner of the workout video on let's say your TV)
• $9.99 a month or $79.99 per year.

 

 

 

Apple One

Apple's new subscription offerings/model

Apple One Individual - 14.95 a month and includes:

Apple One Family - 19.95 a month, can be shared with up to 5 other people and includes:

• 30% higher GPU performance (than the A12)
• 60% faster LTE (than the A12?).
• New Neural Engine with twice the core count of the A13. 11 TOPs.
• More powerful machine-learning accelerator (no stats though)
• USB-C port
• Same camera as the iPad Pro
• Stereo speakers (in landscape).
• Wi-Fi 6
• Apple Pencil support.
• 20W USB-C charger (included I presume)
• $599 for the 64GB model.

 

 

Apple A14 stats (not part of the event)

So Apple gave us quite a bit of numbers regarding the Apple A14 chip, but it can be quite hard to draw conclusions since they are somewhat vague. Luckily for us, Andrei from Anandtech has looked into it a bit more.

The A13 CPU will probably be about 16% faster than the A13 CPU (if Apple's numbers are correct).

The A13 GPU will probably be about 8% faster than the A13 GPU (if Apple's numbers are correct).

Not really that large of an improvement on the CPU and GPU front. 

 

The neural engine however goes from 6 TOPs in the A13 to 11 TOPs in the A14, which means a whopping 83% higher performance (for neural tasks).

 

Apple's A12 and A13 chips were significantly more power hungry and hot than the previous generations, which meant that they would throttle after just a couple of minutes of high load. This might change with the A14.

I'm surprised they didn't address the new iPhones in this event. It was rumored that they wouldn't I believe, but it makes me wonder how much of a delay this year's iPhone release is going to have.

 

Oh well, I can't say I was terribly interested in the new Apple Watch and iPad, but iOS 14 arriving tomorrow is a nice surprise, i didn't expect it that quickly after the event.

Nice presentation, like the WWDC. A bit of a shame no iPhone yet and I was waiting for more presentation on software side and did get some, but I was more shocked if I can call it that when Tim announced WatchOS, iOS and IPadOS are getting updates tomorrow. That's awesome

 

The thing is, I love my Apple Watch 5 and I don't need blood oxygen monitoring since I haven't even got ECG yet due to stupid regulations and what I wanted the most was always-on display. I have all that and it just works beautifully. I'm now getting sleep tracking which will be cool since I always sleep with my watch and charge it in the morning before I go to work. I also love my iPhone XR. People whine how it has crappy display because it's LCD and how notch is massive and all that crap. It's just such a nice device to use.

 

So, I'm super excited for tomorrow when I get WatchOS 7 and iOS 14 on both my devices. I'm far from Apple fan, but I've been Android user for long time listening to straight up bullshit lies from Apple haters until I tried it myself despite all that and realized it's actually really pleasant experience, from software and hardware perspective. So, yeah, looking forward for tomorrow. It's gonna be nice I just wonder when they'll release the stuff so I can be ready. Probably about same time this presentation happened, so in the evening over here in Europe...

Apple officially said it'd be weeks, but the rumor goes that the new iPhones arrive in late October (maybe even early November). I suspect Apple didn't want to make an overly crowded event, especially not when the new iPhones won't arrive for over a month.

This is why people might not want to laugh at Apple going with ARM chips for future Macs. It's already using technology that even AMD will have to wait for, let alone Intel, and it won't have to pay AMD or Intel prices for chips. It's easy to imagine a future MacBook (not necessarily the first ARM model) that's faster than all Windows laptops in its class and still costs less.

Apple Watch SE is actually the best value right now. Latest display with internals of last gen. If you don't care about altimeter and oxygen level, it's a pretty cool piece of tech. Not sure why they had to make it faster instead of more power efficient. Apple Watches are already so fast everything on them is butter smooth.

I just today saw a company engineer’s Pixel 2 device with some pretty severe burn-in due to running Youtube for podcasts, and Youtube not playing with the display off. As this is kind of my use case too on occasion, that kind of cemented my decision to go with LCD over OLED.

I frankly don't care what kind of display I have anymore, really. I had IPS LCD and I had SuperAMOLED displays and while they each have own benefits, they are all so good these days you can't have a bad experience. Even cheap phones for 60€ have IPS displays these days. Anyone remembers cheap touch phones from early days with garbage TFT displays that changed colors at different angles like they are made of of rainbows? Thank god those days are gone.

I had a Samsung Gravity with the display having viewing angles so narrow that each eye got differing shades and colors. The thing legitimately gave me headaches to use. This was as late as 2012.

Yeah, well, which Galaxy are we talking here? Some cheap Galaxy J3 or something? I still have Samsung Galaxy S2 from 2011 and it has SuperAMOLED display with insanely wide view angles.

@LAwLz That's for their rumored upcoming Apple Airtags. Basically Apple's Version of Tile Trackers which you can put on stuff like your Keychain, Umbrella, Wallet. And then the U1 chip itself is now integrated in the Apple Watch 6 and SE. So find my Device is now getting Better with Apple Devices.

Haven’t watched the event yet, but did they give a reasoning for no chargers with the new apple watches? Are they using the same charger as before you just have to buy one separately or is it moving to some other cable or a qi wireless charger?

I have zero burn in after over 3 years with my iPhone X and I have autolock turned off. So sometimes I'll wake up in the morning to see my phone is still on

The engineer has a Galaxy S9. It’s only about 3 years old which is relatively startling for the severity of the burn in.  Since Youtube no longer plays with the screen off, he plays his favorite talk show with the screen on for long periods of time while he drives.

Damn, no updated iPad mini...  

Would love to be able to replace my ipad mini 4th gen and iPad pro 9.7" with a new iPad mini as the 4/5th gens displays are a little too small for writing notes in whilst the 9.7" is too big to use as a EFB in a small GA cockpit.

They do have the charger just dont have the wall plug, So how much does a USB 5W wall plug cost? from apple (lots). But you liky have a USB wall plug already and if not you dont need to get from apple right?

Good. As long as they include the cord thats cool. Because most people have eleventy billion of the wall chargers anyway.
