is the majority of sports game players okay with gambling mechanics?

zassou

this is probably sounds bias, but many sports games include some form of micro-transaction or gambling. the way i see it, is due to american sports culture, the thing i still can't get is athlet cards, big moneys turn fandom into something that prints money. these, together with trading card game like magic, yo-gi-ou and even hearthstone, is nothing but greedy to my eyes.

but my question is, for someone who's grown up in such culture, the act of paying for usless merchandise that with your favourite athlete hero's name, and knowing that the money won't go to his/her pocket; is it totally acceptable?

this is where i'm coming from:

im not a sporty person and im still afraid of "sportsball" because of some accidents in my childhood. i used to view sportsball fans with stupid stereotypes, like they all smelly, they spend rediculious money on shoes, they are all bullies, if you dont play sportsball you're a sissy etc.

Is that an actual trailer for NBA2K or is it a fake trailer someone made to make fun of loot boxes and gambling? I honestly cannot tell.

I've never touched the MyTeam part of the NBA 2K series, but this trailer made me feel extremely uncomfortable on the inside.

If I were to dive into MyTeam, I would certainly be put off by how much RNG this game mode requires. I can barely grind enough coins in MyCareer, nevermind letting a robot decide what card I get.

Just report the game to the ESRB or something and tell them they aren't doing their job properly

https://www.esrb.org/contact/

This is obviously a gambling simulator and they aren't even hiding it anymore. The fact that it's rated E for everyone is mindboggling. Just because "in-game purchase" are "optional", it doesn't suddenly make it ok.

Gambling is not good.

loot boxes etc are bad for gaming imo and I prefer the good old days where you bought a game and had to unlock things rather than pay for them.

Most games with micro-transactions are cosmetics only.

Apparently someone already reported this to PEGI (European ESRB) who replied (and I'm just paraphrasing/shortening an already TL;DR) they couldn't comment on the trailer alone.

I found that on Reddit, but could only read the first couple sentences, since Reddit is experiencing some technical difficulties it seems...

Need for Speed: Payback most certainly wasn't with its idiotic retarded slot machine method of "being lucky" at buying parts for your car. It literally worked like a frigging slot machine. Thank god they sacked that shit for Need for Speed: Heat. I just wonder what else they'll fuck up. Coz it's EA after all...

If NFS Payback didn't have that garbage it would actually be bearable game. Driving model was ok, so was world to drive through and fiddling with cars actualyl changed their behavior. But for god sake the way you upgraded them was absolutely ridiculous.

Btw, you guys should check AngryJoe's commentary on this NBA garbage.

Pay to have a chance of getting crap HELL NO. When i pay i want my money's worth.
But i dont mind paying for ingame items. I have done. But ill never pay to gamble, else i would go to a casino and have a chance of actualy winning.

All this pay for a chance is fucking awefull imho, just another way for them capitalistic money grubbing fucks to get more money out of the dumber ones that are willing to pay for this. (also the ones ruining the whole gaming enviroment imo. We need to hold to our ideals and force the manufacterers to make good games again. But i have little hope, Indy Dev's FTW!!!)

ive bean fallowing lootboxes for some time now and its kinda the reason i don't game much anymore. i never can tell if a company is good any more... now it looks like games come out with no boxes but a year later there in there.... and i don't get hyped about trailers anymore ether as there 99.9% render or played on a super computer.... even diablo 4 im going to be skeptical about. just makes me sic. on the other hand there's big opportunity for Indy games like gow that nailed it. so there that.

the phone killed gaming....

I have dyslexia plz be kind to me. dont like my post dont read it or respond thx

Because it's not money you get.

Same reason MTG, Pokémon cards, pogs or crazy bones were not gambling.

Good casinos have 21+ rating, you won't be allowed to play if you're under this age. As for online gambling sites like blackjack online or virtual slots , these have similar restrictions and of course, you can always tell lie about your real age and nobody will notice that.

Sure those rules are worldwide are they?!
I was talking about my specific country.

And NO, lying about it wont work, cus over here EVERYONE must show ID...
Also online gambling is NOT allowed. For that exact reason.

So next time instead of thinking there is only 1 country, broaden ones mind and think outside the box.;)

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the rating for NBA 2K20.

ESRB assigns age and content ratings based on the final content of a game and the context in which it is presented to the player. Content shown in trailers does not factor into our rating assignments. ESRB stands by our rating assignment for NBA 2K20, which is E (Everyone) with Mild Language, Users Interact, and In-Game Purchases. Please click here for NBA 2K20’s complete rating information, including its rating summary.

Basically, they give zero shit. To them this clear and obvious gambling shit is just your run of the mill "in-game purchase" and it isn't wrong in any way for the game to be rated E for everyone. Even though the "in-game purchases" are literally styled like the stuff you'd find in a casino. Gotta hook 'em young eh.
