Back in b̶l̶a̶c̶k̶ Blue - Microsoft's New Edge tested, faster than Chrome

Summary:
By removing over 50 services included by Google in Chrome, Microsoft's new Chrome based edge is noticeably faster than Google's Counterpart

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

Microsoft just released preview versions of its Chromium-powered Edge browser today. It’s very stable and performs surprisingly well. It even performs better than Google’s own Chrome browser on Windows 10, despite being built on the same Chromium open-source project. The company has revealed all of the Google services it has replaced or removed from its new Chromium-powered browser to optimize performance. Microsoft has removed or replaced more than 50 of Google’s services that come as part of Chromium. Microsoft’s Edge engineering team is due to reveal more about its Chromium work during a BlinkOn 10 keynote tomorrow. Microsoft is also working on ARM support for Chromium, alongside PDF enhancements, battery life improvements, smooth scrolling, editing, layout, dev tools, and web authentication. Microsoft also notes that “building Edge on Chromium was a relatively smooth process,” and that it has made hundreds of changes to Chromium to produce its Edge version with more than 300 merges so far. It’s clear we’re only at the starting phase of a Chromium-powered Edge, and Microsoft is also developing versions that will run on Windows 8, Windows 7, and macOS.

My Thoughts:
I honestly never thought I'd be saying this in my lifetime... but I may actually switch back to Microsoft's web browser. Assuming it can keep full chrome add-in compatibility, better performance, and better battery life that is. I'm mainly waiting on some detailed reports on the data collection Microsoft's Edge is doing versus Google's Chrome. I really think Microsoft made the correct decision.

That's impressive on paper, but I'll believe it when I see it as time passes.

Im already loving how much less RAM new Edge uses, it make a nice replacement on my laptop which currently uses Chrome. Battery like you mentioned is also a concern though.

I'd still be on firefox if they didn't kill off all the appearance customization options. :(

That's not a high bar to pass.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Sweet, I only use 5 of these features, if I can manually turn them on in edge then it might make for a good alternative to the monolithic chrome.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Chrome can't even play back video without stuttering thanks to the last few versions of WidevineCdm for a lot of my NVIDIA computers. Fullscreen makes it freeze ever 3 seconds. Using a flag to disable direct compression worked until a few weeks ago, but it seems to ignore the flag now.

Youtube is broken on firefox, but at least it doesn't stutter.

Browsers these days are a dumpster fire. I don't think this is going to be any better or worse.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Have they, and I can not stress this enough, included a proper bookmark bar like Chrome has? Or proper bookmark managing at all. The bookmark system that they had until now was unusable for me.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Sync is coming and the adblock feature was only for "intrusive" (worth pointing out, intrusive as defined by Google) ads, which were just popups and unmuted autoplay videos.

If you really want ad blocking just install ublock origin which you can for the available releases.

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

It's there... well the option is there but disabled, marked as coming.

As for ad block, you can install any Chrome extention (beside theme related ones) or Edge ones.

Did you see what they turned off to get this result though? They disabled the extension store for crying out loud. The performance is only better if they cripple it... if that's your only metric, may I introduce you to surf? I'd be willing to bet it's faster than Chrome and the new Edge... at the cost of every feature that isn't displaying a web page.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Turns out that the store has simply been replaced:

I believe it when I see it. Most of those "50 things removed" have just been replaced, or is in the process of being replaced, with Microsoft equivalent features which does the same thing. For example Safe browsing is getting replaced by SmartScreen.

And why are people cheering that they have disabled things like AdBlocking?

And I don't believe for a second that it's faster than Chrome until some independent third party tests have been done (as in, not just something a dumbass on Verge says, or a Microsoft employee being paid to say it's better). If it's one thing I've come to realize when talking about browsers, it's that even "tech enthusiasts" doesn't know the first thing about them, and make assumptions which are completely inaccurate all the time.

Yeah, I've been an Opera user for well over 10 years myself, and I have been very happy with it. I'll occasionally use Chrome and Firefox too, but I stick with Opera as my main browser of choice.

If I wanted a Chrome based browser I'd go back to Opera again which is so underrated and for whatever reason relatively unknown/unused browser. But I prefer Firefox...

Do these holy scriptures work on stone tablets?
