The faster the framerate, the better the illusion of things moving on the screen. And I at least can see the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz when it comes to playing games or simply watching content. Its smoother and more lifelike. There was even noticeable difference for me when I went down from my very old low res 85Hz LCD TV/monitor to my current 1080p 60Hz screen.

The Hobbit movies used 48 fps and not 60fps.

The 24fps comes from that it's the least frames with motion blur where human eye sees fluid motion. 24fps has been kept as the standard because it also requires the least film (which is very expensive) and even if the showing media is mostly digital in the filming many directors want to use filmcameras for some artistic effects (like using older lenses) and few studios recommend it still because archiving and reproduction (it takes more time but the outcome is a lot better when you rescan the master roll for a higher resolution release than just upscale the old digital release, best example Star Wars IV: New Hope LucasArts will upscaled the old FullHD BR release for the probably upcoming 4K HDR release while [As piracy talk is banned here, but here I go] Project 4k77 version is rescanned from original '77 theater 35mm Technicolor release; The FullHD BR release did saw a huge restoration project which was mostly adding filters and remaking stuff with CGI to get the movie look like movie from 2011, the Project 4k77 shows the movie as it was originally made but with the details and sharpness you could expect from a movie made in 2017 and because there's no upscaling there's a lot of details that have been lost from offical releases because after 1993 there hasn't been a single rescan but at least one upscale; Also, Han shot first).

 

So that 24fps has nothing to do with TV broadcasting.

Movies have been in 24 fps for a long time. even if the resolutions went up to 4k already, Paramount wants to make a change to that. They're going to request various cinema's if they can run 4k 120 fps movies.

The hobbit was 48 and 60. People HATED it. You instantly get sick. There is a reason they use 24 or 23.97fps

i cant even stand anything over 24fps in a cinema. it feels more fake for some reason.

Without seeing it, it is hard to comment if this is a good or bad thing. From my little dabbling in video I came across things like messing with the phase angle to alter the perception of the video (which needs the "right" amount of motion blur for the frame rate) and also the "soap opera effect" on high refresh rate TVs interpolating lower rate content.

 

I would say, I have been trying to make gaming videos thinking capturing at 30fps would be "good enough" for viewing... I think I made the wrong choice there.

cant wait, modern movies specially action movies have scenes where we cant even see what is going on because of how slow the refresh is, panning is also horrible as its either quite slow or you see the what seems like stutters, these days i use svp4 to watch everything on my pc, and everytime i go to the movies i question why is it still 24 fps

I'm all for trying out higher framerate on movies. I enjoyed the Hobbit movies at 48fps, they are the most comfortable movies to view on a big screen I've ever seen. But some stuff felt a bit off at times, so clearly it is a challenge to make the movies look good at higher framerates.
With today's 24fps movies I frequently get uncomfortable during movies when there is a lot of movement going on, it becomes a blurry mess that my eyes try to focus on, causing strain and discomfort. It is not a big deal, but the only way to fix this is to go for a higher framerate, or really slow down camera movement and movement by actors/objects

This, especially action packed and zoomed stuff, also fast panning lools so terrible I wonder how come it's still used.

I don't think so though. I enjoy 60FPS on Youtube but the screen isn't 60 feets tall and massive. Try going to an Omni theater. Instant sickness

When we get to these framerates the uncanny valley comes into effect, especially in movies with live recordings.
 

Basically the human brain hates that it looks kind-of real. the closer to real it looks without being perfect the creepier it is.

 

Not to mention on a screen that big your eyes may have a hard time focusing and if you are too close to the screen your body may actually feel like it is moving without your consent which definitely can trigger motion sickness

Also rendering/storing/playback would make this pretty much useless as production will be absolutely much harder than doing 60fps max, I would rather see them take the resources and invest it into 8k

Honestly I only like high refresh rates for games... 120 FPS for a movie? Not sure I'd like that. BUT, not gonna say that for sure because I obviously haven't seen one.

One additional issue though is that motion blur at high fps is extremely nauseating for some individuals (like myself) and for some ungodly reason a number of game developers and media designers cant seem to understand that motion blur looks like crap and is unrealistic. 

 

The closer things get to the speed and distinctiveness that real life has, the less they should be doing crap like narrow focal depth and motion blur and all that, instead relying on the actual viewer actually concentrating in plane on something that seems realistic. (Particularly with 3d projections)

 

 

Side opinion note: real dslr bokeh looks bad 99% of the time. Fake bokeh looks worse. please stop forcing people to remove detail from their images.
