If I'm a copyright or w/e judge and I'm having to decide if the product could possibly cause consumer confusion (which is often how these are decided), I'm going all in on the P20.

I'm saying that the marked difference in the style of the notch and consequently drastically different screen size in combination with the difference in fingerprint sensor location makes the Motorola P30 much closer in design to the iPhone X than it does the Huawei P20 in my opinion, yes.

We're talking about how similar the phones look - you can't just say "but if it wasn't different in these ways it would look just like this phone"; those differences exist, and as a result the phone appears noticeably different. Again with the colour scheme aside however this is not so when comparing it to the iPhone X. I do agree that the colour scheme is incredibly close to that of the P20.

Just want to make sure everyone understands that calling it the P30 is really what pushes it over. Imagine someone releasing the lphone V (that's a lowercase L not an i)

Edit: lphone X is actually a better comparison. One character changed. Can't do iphone V because apple owns "iPhone", huawei can't trademark the letter P but they are also the only company releasing smartphones called the P10 and P20

Yeah Motorola has no defense of this it's like they purposely tried to copy Apple. Also the notch is really stupid for any phone Android or Apple.

That image is just selective marketing. The only way it's true is if you ignore all the palm and poketpc phones that existed well before the iphone.   And ignore all the flip phones and keypad phones that still came after it.  The evolution of the phone is just as transitory as any other tech.

I disagree.  Before the iphone people were very skeptical about ditching the keyboard in some physical form.  After the iphone (and proof people would ditch keyboards if it was done right) the top selling phones are all black rectangles.

It might have been evolutionary in the long term development of phones, but you only have to look at Blackberry to see the immediate fall out from this shift.

The notch is another stupid trend Apple started that EVERYONE is copying. How many times has this happened now? So sick of it. If you're gonna copy Apple, can you at least copy the things they do right?

Best example, REMOVING THE HEADPHONE JACK!!! Just, why? insert "I never really used that jack anyway, it's so old!" here

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Apple didnt start the notch Essential did, but even so people dont understand how phones are made.

Companies buy parts from suppliers and the suppliers have various offerings. The latest offerings from Samsung Display/AU Optronics (Joint makers of AMOLED) and LG (P-OLED) have a notch to accommodate the camera while maximizing screen real estate. That's why most of the flagships have notches. Of course it can be done on LCDs too but I'm just pointing out that like 3 companies make all the phone screens

I hope they get their a*ses sued out from under em'!

You have to remember that Apple also told Samsung to "stop using rounded corners" so their design didn't infringe on Apple's products.

Apple is the soiled brat of the phone world you don't see car manufacturers sueing because "you car has a rear spoiler but my car had one first"

If you honestly believe the P30 is closer to the iPhone you are blind or an apple fanboy...

That's kinda because it is.

My uncle has a P20 Pro and I had some time with an iPhone X. Unless you look at them from really far off, it's not too hard to tell the 2 apart.

  • The notch on the P20 is much smaller due to it needing to accommodate less.
  • The P20 has a very significant chin bar to house a fingerprint sensor while the iPhone X barely has one.
  • The aforementioned fingerprint sensor is very noticeable due to the shiny chromed edges. It's also slightly thinner than the home button Samsung used.

Motorola, on the other hand, is aping most of the iPhone X's design. At least OnePlus had some of its own take

Lmao it's one thing to make a phone that looks similar but quite another to blatantly rip off the marketing...

Anyone who thought this is a good idea deserves to be sued.

That's an F in the profile pic

i hate Apple and courts in America are almost icourts (patent pending) by this point, but come on that was too much of a rip off. They have every right to sue and should win, that's just shameful copying.
