*Update* OnePlus5 reboots when dialing 911

The user was also able to reproduce the issue while recording it. 

 

Pretty severe issue. I don't understand how this can even be an issue. And I can only imagine the kind if lawsuits and legal issues this could lead to. 

 

On Reddit they say you must dial 116 instead *cough cough, wink wink*

 

Update: tldr it's most likely an issue with non-stock dialers.

This is due to an incompatibility with the dialer's framework and the dialer apk. This issue presents with gApp dialers, google dialer, etc... anything but the stock dialer. This is because, these apks usually omits the needed framework and use the preinstalled framework, on your phone. To fix, either update the framework files or revert back to your stock dialer.

If you are running the stock dialer already, then OnePlus messed up. If you have the OP5, Open gApps started adding a framework with their larger packs. read the above link.

I don't have a OP5, so I cannot flash gApps to see if the issue can be fixed. However, maybe someone can test it out.

My most annoying issue was "Dialer has stopped responding" when trying to make or answer a call.

And I reckon is one of the many necessities for entering EU. Seeing that sadly Croatia entered EU 4 years ago and we've had 112 for ~13 years. Fun fact, even India uses it. :o

You should add something to the OP stating that users shouldn't try calling 911 or equivalent just to see if it works. Tying up those lines isn't a joke.

 

Seems like there's a few phones that have had this issue as of late. The Asus Zenfone line had similar issues. It's nothing a simple quick patch can't fix, and OnePlus will likely come out with something tomorrow.

Well in some countries, like US, dialing 112 forwards your call to 911. Is it happening in European countries that only have 112?

I love how he tried to call 911 just for a test... I'm pretty sure he could have been arrested if the call went through.

 

As for the issue itself, it can probably be easily fixed in software. It's good to get the information out there but I wouldn't get overly worked up about it with 1+.

I have a oneplus x and while the support hasn't been stellar, it's been adequate. As of right now I can't think of any major issue with it other than not being able to upgrade to nougat with OTA updates. It used to have a bug where it would occasionally stutter at the beginning of online videos, but that was fixed. And an issue like this will probably be fixed very soon (although if it isn't the concern will be justified) - I hardly see this as the end of 1+, especially since many other producers have had far worse issues with their devices (not all related to software either, just think of the note 7) and haven't declared bankruptcy as of yet, nor do I believe they will in the near future.

I've owned the OnePlus One, the OnePlus X, and the OnePlus 3T. My roommate owns the OnePlus 2.

 

My list, from best to worst, is:

 

  1. OnePlus 3T
  2. OnePlus X
  3. OnePlus One
  4. OnePlus 2

Currently, I'd put the 5 between the X and the One. From everything I've seen, the only major upgrades are a thinner body and a better camera.

 

While I support OP's decision to keep lower-res displays in the past; as mobile VR becomes a thing I personally have a reason to want High DPI displays now. I tried the Gear VR and actually found it to be pretty fun.

 

Combining this really mediocre spec bump with the weird issues coming out of the woodwork, and my next phone may be a Pixel 2.

I could not even begin to imagine how OnePlus didn't notice this issue, as considering how absolutely devastating this could be in a situation of emergency were contact with the emergency services needs to be made instantly in event of say a stroke or an car accident in less dense communities.

I once did the unthinkable, back many headphones ago...

Its not rebooting every time it calls so it can be easily missed. Yeah it can be absolutely devastating and mean life and death for someone but some problems and bug are not apparent until millions of people get their hands on it. Only so much testing can be done between a handful of people.

 

There are also reports of this happening on different android devices possibly due to the enhanced services code.
