Huh, when your broadband and mobile data are all having funky connections...
Broadband: 160ms avg ping, 88ms jitter, 15% packet loss, 6/0.05Mbps
3G: 90ms avg ping, 70ms jitter, 5% packet loss, 7/0.1Mbps
4G: 75ms ping, 90ms jitter, 7% packet loss, 13/6Mbps
Did someone cut a major fiber cable or smth? 3 somewhat seperate networks, all running at reduced speeds with considerably worse ping/jitter/packet loss
For reference, the usual speeds are...
Broadband: 15/0.5Mbps
3G: 35/4Mbps
4G: 20/15Mbps
Minimal jitter and no packet loss on all three

@EnergycoreCause its the UK so the vast majority of home Internet is provided through copper phone lines. On the brightside, we're getting it upgraded from 17/0.5 to 100/10 on the 5th February

Hmmm, just realised my tube of MX-4 is actually completely empty. So, a 12g tube of MX-4 is £6 whilst a 1g tube of kryonaut is also £6. So, do I go with the timeless staple (which still seems to perform rather well) or go with the bees knees...hmmmmm...
-
Bees knees - there is a few C difference. And applying Kryo is a different experience than most TIM (you have to manually spread and cover the IHS)
-
@Tristerin Hmmmm, I mean had a look at comparisons and the general consensus is that the kryonaut is about 1 to 2C better than MX-4.
SpoilerIs it worth the 12x price increase? I'm no so sure, especially when Ryzen 1st gen doesn't overclock all the nicely anyway (nor does my Fury) plus it's slapped under a custom loop so even under a full load (both CPU and GPU), it stabilises at 50 to 55C (dependant on ambient temps) with 3.5 year old MX-4
The only caveat is I think I am going to get a 3700X. Looking at previously sold pricing on eBay (auctions), they're going for about £200 to 220 which is actually a lot cheaper than I anticipated as "buy it now" pricing is close to £300.
-
TBH I keep MX-4, AS5, Noctua and Kryo on hand - I only use Kryo for my personal rigs and the rest is for everyone else lol
I think it is worth the price increase on my personal stuff - but also its crazy expensive. IF you are thinking of getting the 3700x I still recommend the Kryo
And yea I just bought a used R5 3600 cause the price was right.
-
-
Hmmmmm...so...
A 1700 is free (cause I already own it)
A 2700 is a £35 upgrade.
A 3700x is a £200 upgrade
Wonder if the 3700x is actually worth it

@EnergycoreDefinately not utilising my 1700 enough
Mind you, I've started utilising my CPU more. Being forced to use some horrendously optimised programs that only uses a single core...(*cough cough* Wolfram Mathematica and a few others) and I do actually notice my 1700 chugging slightly at times (for those shoddy 1-core programs) so a 3700X would kinda be nice...
As for gaming n stuff, I mean I suspect my Fury will be the biggest bottleneck, even for 2560x1080@120Hz (panel actually goes up to 200Hz but the ghosting is pretty noticeable).
Tbh, the 2700 is too similar to my 1700 so I'm tempted to scrap it, especially if I can get 3.95GHz on my 1700. As for the 3700X, I dunno, £200 feels a little steep but at the same time, I kinda wanna try playing around with some Micron E-die so I dunno. What I do know is a B350 mobo would definitely be less than ideal as well but at the same time, MSI has explicitly stated compatibility so why not eh?
-
Considering your workload, I'd consider a Ryzen 3600 then.
The multicore performance of the 3600 is about the same as the 1700 because of the hefty single core improvement.
Should be cheaper, I hope
-
@Energycorehad a look on ebay.
A 3700x is actually about £220 there (based on auction pricing, £120 "investment")
A 3600 is about £160 (about £70 after selling 1700)
£60 difference...hmmm...

@ragnarok0273 I mean the XMP/AMP profile is for 3200@CL16 so not the bestest but not the worst either. Hopefully my 1700 memory controller is happy to sit at 3200@CL16 but if not, I can always adjust as necessary

Huh, neat. Charging my SE with my Xperia 5 II actually works pretty well. Granted, with an output of 4.8V@0.7A, it won't be the fastest charge ever but perfectly fine for topping up my SE whenever I do go to Japan
Too bad my Japanese sim didn't work on my Xperia 1 and I suspect it's the same with the Xperia 5 II but hey, at least I don't have to use my Z3C as a hotspot, especially as I am more than happy to use my SE as a "primary" phone (especially as it's the phone that my Line account is actually linked to, not my 5 II as Line lite isn't a thing on IOS).

Three UK, why you so...I dunno? The speeds in Edinburgh tho...
3G (HSPA+): 34/4Mbps
4G (LTE): 22/17Mbps
5G (sub 6): 29/5Mbps
You know smth isn't right when 3G is the fastest
Too bad Edinburgh doesn't have the infrastructure like London...doubt you'd get 100Mb+ on 5G anywhere in Edinburgh as the backbone won't be able to sustain it.

Honestly the whole Three network's infrastructure is crap compared to EE and Vodafone... if they weren't so cheap, they would be out of business by now.
The main issue I've had with them is near non-existent rural coverage as well as lots of random blackspots all over the place. Switched to an MVNO which uses EE a couple of years ago and haven't looked back.
-
@AluminiumTechYou'd think their 5G would be faster but tbh, I suspect they've just piggybacked off their 4G network, which is already wayyy too overloaded.
@colonel_mortis No idea what phone you have but my personal experience with Three (after 8 years) is their 4G network is wayyyyyy too overloaded. Their 3G network on the other hand is probably under-utilised so if you can, try forcing your phone to 3G. You may find yourself with noticeably better speeds. Whenever I visited my sister in London, I would force my phone into 3G as it was the difference of not even being able to load a webpage (nevermind trying to get speedtest to run) and a rock solid 18/2Mbps~ 3G connection.
@pythonmegapixelTheir infrastructure is different to most of the other networks. They never had a 2G network as they started up on the whole premise of being the first to offer 3G so their rural-rural coverage is spotty as they outright don't have any 2G masts, especially as their 2G agreement with T-Mobile (or was it Orange?) expired. Mind you, my personal experience dictates that their 3G network is actually the best out of the bunch, even in the highlands as I've gotten a 3G signal halfway up munros (that would load 1080p videos no problem) where friends couldn't even get a 2G signal with O2/Vodaphone/EE. Their 4G on the other hand is just too oversubscribed, which I guess is what happens when you literally are the cheapest, offering unlimited data for £16/month (which at least for me is faster than my home connection, for a lot less) and phones automatically connecting to the 4G network, leaving the 3G network completely under utilised

@themaniac I mean being at 56N, in the winter, the sun sets at 15:40~ right now and doesn't rise again until 08:50-ish. As for the actual photo, it was slightly brighter than normal as the clouds were at about 50ft above ground so all the street lights were being reflected down but yeah, surprisingly "bright" for 12:30am/00:30. I mean if you look at the top left corner where a street light is, you can see how horrendously blown out it is so the algorithm was being rather aggressive with "brightening" the image.
-
-
Now that is pretty spicy. 5G is pretty fast I guess

@PCGuy_5960This is indoors but mind you, this is also sub-6 so it's not just gonna fall odd the cliff if I moved a little.
I mean that's more just showing how inadequate the UK Internet backbone is setup. Upload will always be restricted (I mean 1Gbps connections here typically mean 1000/100) soooo...

Damn, finally consolidated all my accounts to my Xperia 5 II and added the necessary accounts to my SE 2020. Why is everything so horrible?
Line - What do you mean I can't restore chats between Android and IOS?
Starling - Yes, you've asked me to authenticate with password, email code and text code but you still want me to record a video for "authentication"?
HSBC - Makes you remember 5 passwords/codes, throws "invalid pw/code" half the time so you need to reset all of them, again (for the 5th time in 2 months)
Microsoft - As last status update, forcing you to use their horrible app
Vanquis - Do you really need my password, passcode, DoB, card security code, email code and a text code? Seems a little OTT no?
Sony - God dammit, why you no longer support your album app? At least sideloading a Xperia 1 APK works
Google - Stop saying I've already added the account when I haven't...just because I have a google account based on a hotmail email doesn't mean I've added the "hotmail/outlook" account on to the phone. Also, android backup is pretty terribad. Compared to iCloud backups, google backups miss out like half of the things you want it to just transfer over...
-
Is this a joke? I need to download outlook (android app) to add my Hotmail account onto my android phone? Microsoft won't let me connect via exchange...ffs
-
Hotmail/outlook is terrible for these sorts of things. Microsoft wants you to use their clients.
-
Use Thunderbird

My Sony account: hey hey, I see you bought a Xperia 5 II, want £50 cashback on a pair of WH-1000XM3?
Me: £170 for a pair of WH-1000XM3...deffo don't need but at the same time...I kinda do want...especially with a solid sale.
-
Why is a 0.5cm type-C to lightning cable £12 when I can buy a 1.5m type-C to lightning cable for £7?
-
I'm just here, really curious as to how a 0.5cm cable would actually work
/s
it might have to do with the thickness of the cable.. the connector.. the USB standard..
Or more likely, just because cable prices aren't really made up by the price of components, but really by how much the company thinks they can charge and still get away with it.
-
@minibois Oh I know, plus there's supply and demand
Anyway, it is however a little annoying when all I want to do is use my Android phone as a battery bank for my SE 2020...wait what? Mind you, my Japanese sim dislikes non-Japan bought android phones for some unknown reason plus fam uses imessenger/facetime so gotta have an IOS device.

Ah yes, how to want to yeet yourself off a bridge quick...learn how to program in C or C++.
Electronics: Here's a bunch of C code, find the errors/bugs!
CS: Here, program shared mem and TCP in C++, alongside a specific interface that my brain is failing to work with.
Why you so bad Uni? Probs doesn't help I'm still doing my flight training so I'm always tired AF...

@AluminiumTechNah, C for (embedded) electronics, C++ for CS.
Guess this is what I get for being dual honours...double pain at the same time...
Just gib me bacccc Python

Oh no...Sony's doing a black Friday sale on their Xperia 1 II and 5 II reducing both by £200 (from £1000/800 to 800/600).
The 5 II really is calling out to me...do I really need to upgrade tho?

Dewit
-
@PCGuy_5960Aight, you've convinced me. Although I've only owned my Xperia 1 for 14 months, the deal is just too good.
I mean the Xperia 5 II literally fixes every single issue and wishes I have ever had with my Xperia 1...it's like they read my mind.
- Battery life: the 3330mAh battery in the 1 comfortably gave me a day of usage but nothing more. 4000mAh@1080p instead of 4K will easily fix that wish.
- Headphone jack, don't need to say much
- Zoom lens, 50mm FF-equivalent isn't enough for my uses whereas the 70mm FF-equivalent on the mk2s is exactly what I wished for.
-
The 5II is really underrated.

TIL that my anker QC3.0 charger can't even output 7W to a single device
No wonder my phone and ipad take forever to charge...

Lab for a University class named "real time computer systems". They've given us ARM dev boards so everyone thought maybe a little programming or testing.
Lab sheet: "please look though the provided .txt file and answer the following questions"
What is this BS? WTF is this lab for? Why give us a dev board if we're not going to use it? Surely you could have made it so at the very least it would have complied on our dev boards so we could have used debugging tools instead of answering via finding the answers via text files...

@EnergycoreWhen it works properly, it's usually 17Mbps down (perfectly acceptable) but 0.6Mbps up
Did someone say I can get 33/4Mbps on 3G HSPDA+ with my phone?
@DildorTheDecentI can only blame talktalk for the early disconnection fees. Because Openreach (aka BT) are some stingy AF bastards, our house built in 2016 was connected directly to the exchange rather than a cabinet so we can't get any kind of FTTC (so no cheap "decent" speeds, it's either ADSL or FTTP with openreach). VM on the other hand, at the time when we moved in was horribly overloaded in our area (friends were seeing drops down to 6/1Mbps on their 100/10Mbps connection) and with this house empty 6 months/year (well pre-covid anyway), it made sense to just stick to our £17.50/month plan.
-
@Energycore Ping is partially fixed!
(usually see between 26 to 32ms for this server) However, upload is worse
-
Huh...where has 13/10mm (1/2" OD, 3/8" ID) tubing gone? If I'm replacing the pump in my rig, I might as well re-tube the whole loop (as the tubing is now about 2.5 years old) but can't find any 13/10mm tubing to buy...shiet?
-
Oh yikes, my watercooling pump is dying I think...not actually engaging half the time...

@DildorTheDecent Already have the heatsink (with a res top) so I guess I could just grab a PWM DDC pump and just do a simple switcharo
@Energycore True, albeit I'm getting lazier and lazier
