Cybersecurity experts at CyberNews hijacked close to 28,000 unsecured printers worldwide and forced them to print out a guide on printer security

To perform the experiment, we used Internet of Things (IoT) search engines to search for open devices that utilized common printer ports and protocols. After filtering out most of the false positives, we were left with more than 800,000 printers that had network printing features enabled and were accessible over the internet.

 
While this does not mean that all 800,000 of these printers were necessarily vulnerable to cyberattacks, our estimates have shown that we could successfully target approximately 500,000 of these devices.
 
After selecting a sample of 50,000 open printers and creating a custom printing script, we managed to print out PDF documents on 27,944 unprotected devices.

My thoughts

Yeah, printer security doesn't seem that important and these kinds of hacks have been done in the past (as mentioned in the article), but looks like people didn't get the memo the first few times. And it's better to get a helpful guide on how to secure your printer rather than something more nefarious.

I really do like this kind of activism. Honestly. Though I suppose it only takes one person to print something fake off and make it all go to hell lol.

Look, yes ink is expensive, but if the worst thing that happens to you from unsecured networks is losing a few cartridges of ink, you got off pretty lucky. 

 

It should go without saying but hacking the printer is just the first step into the networks it's attached to, and that's where the real value is. (Or even just noting that the type of person who doesn't secure their printers probably doesn't secure anything else either lol)

There's a lot of people in my area that don't secure their HP Office Jet printers. I can see them when I search for new WiFi's inside my house.

I can fix that.

 

Throw the george foreman grill in the trash where it belongs (or recycle it, I guess) and use the reverse sear method with a cast iron skillet, or carbon steel or stainless steel.

Yep. 90% of them errored out because the black ink was expired or because it couldn't print black and white due to yellow being out.

My printer is a wifi printer, and it has some web functionality.

 

Not sure of the security, but I only turn on the printer like once a week to print something, then turn it off again. So not really that concerned.

 

Unless someone would install custom firmware that makes the printer "pretend" it is off, I am not really concerned it would be added to a botnet or something.

 

I think a bigger problem is devices that are always on, like security cameras.

The whole IoT concept is turning into a massive problem. Printers aren’t really in that group, though it appears they have the same problem. Perhaps it could be said that by putting IoT stuff in your house you are effectively adding an unsecured but also unsecurable printer.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Yeah, printer security doesn't seem that important and these kinds of hacks have been done in the past (as mentioned in the article), but looks like people didn't get the memo the first few times. And it's better to get a helpful guide on how to secure your printer rather than something more nefarious.

I was thinking something similar.

 

From my recollection of previous ones, a lot of the printers that were open were corporate printers...which would kind of make sense.  I've heard of places that had printers like that because it was cheaper putting a printer on a static IP and pointing multiple offices to print to the printer than it was to create the proper VPN network needed.  (From the day when creating multi-site VPN networks was a lot more expensive I think)...from there it was just left in place due to legacy stuff.  (That is my thought anyways)
