Yeah, printer security doesn't seem that important and these kinds of hacks have been done in the past (as mentioned in the article), but looks like people didn't get the memo the first few times. And it's better to get a helpful guide on how to secure your printer rather than something more nefarious. 

Well, the problem isn't the printer.  The problem is that with most printers also having old or unpatched firmware, and many security issues in a lot of them that allow pivot attacks (connect and go on to something else on the internal network), these make the whole network insecure and vulnerable.  Think of it like saying "here's a public vpn connection to my secure network."  That's the kind of damage this CAN cause (though each printer and similar is different in how easy that is, or how persistent that connection can be made to be).

Wait a second where's the Razer Toaster Oven PC?  A Toaster is awesome but you can't bake a pizza in a toaster.  Gotta go with a Toaster Oven.
