What doesn't make sense is that they can show advertisements on a video without paying them. Seems pretty shady if you ask me.

This could so easily be fixed. 

 

Youtube has automatic filters that flag certain comments. Make that option available to content creators and give them a choice:

 

a) allow all and risk demonetization of certain videos

b) allow all but react within [x] days time on flags and risk temporary demonetization

c) let Youtube's filter flag comments that will only be shown when the creator actively approves a comment (and by that willingly risking demonetization)

d) autoapprove all of Youtube's automatic flags with no risk of automatic demonetization

 

You could even give content creators the option to define individual rules.

 

The comment section could show unapproved/flagged comments by saying "This comment has been flagged for alleged violation of Youtube's community guidelines. The creator has been notified." or "This comment has been flagged for alleged violation of this creator's individual community guidelines. The creator has been notified."

 

If it gets blocked the info can be changed to "This comment has been removed due to violations of Youtube's community guidelines."

 

This keeps creators in business, Youtube did their share and it is obvious if comments got erased/blocked or flagged. Creators can just ignore Youtube's flags if they want to and if people want to keep their part of Youtube the way they like it, they can do that and for everyone else it's obvious that commens were removed because of Youtube or because of a content creator.

Use the quote function when answering! Mark people directly if you want an answer from them!

I agree some automated system would definitely be better than channel owners turning off comments or possibly get demonetized,another option is let the channel owner manually approve comments before they are posted. Although I think Youtube needs to defend their content creators and punish people for bad comments.

at this point just do this YT:

1- remove all videos containing minors

2- uploaders must be over 18 years of age

3- viewers who are minors can only comment if the account is attached to the account of a legal guardian, and the legal guardian approves and authorise the comment post

4- in order to not end up like pron sites where anyone can enter, account creation will now require an ID and a credit/debit card to control age validity

5- account creation will now be postponed for five days in order to check validity with public authorities

Unfortunately Google has shown repeatedly that YouTube is one of their "low effort" projects so I doubt they'll do any significant work to actually support creators.

As a couple of people here have pointed out though it's actually in YouTubes best interest to demonetize videos because they can still show ads on them and just not have to pay the creator so they can just pocket that money.

How ironic would it be it they actually became the next competitor to YouTube lol. It's actually not even that far fetched from a is it possible standpoint. I still think it would be easier for someone like Amazon to simply take twitch and add a YouTube like portion to it like how YouTube added a streaming portion to itself.

silicon valley tech giants seem to want to stifle any sort of communication at any cost, and hide it behind advertising reasons. next will be the removal of the dislike button

I see this as an intentional way to make more people disable comments to make videos more advertiser friendly and avoid the pedo ring scandal from happening. This also is a move to disassociate disabling comments with damage control, making it more normal.

Exactly, kind of like a chat bot on twitch. Filters out stuff like ASCII text etc

My two cents (this will probably get buried, but I hope someone will pay attention to what I have to say)

 

I think the issue is a bit more fundamental than we might think. I believe that this whole ordeal is being underestimated not only by YouTube, but also people who do value freedom of speech/expression (rightfully or wrongfully).

 

We are not discussing the root of the problem, which in my view is the entire concept of anonymity online and lack of accountability vis a vis censorship and authoritarian corporatism. We are seeing the results of the aforementioned dilemma unfold before us.

 

Now this is a very tricky/controversial area of discussion, and until we do discuss it, not much progress will happen in my view. 

 

What I propose, from my own personal diagnosis of the problem, is an overhaul of social interactivity on YouTube that affirms in no uncertain terms 3 key elements:

 

     1. Creators and users are equally endowed with freedom of speech/expression (which entails religion, politics ...ect)

     2. Creators and users are responsible for their actions. In other words, the behavior of users has no bearing on the channel of the creators and vice versa with the exception being:

 

*Creators explicitly ordering/influencing users to physically harm other creators/users (and vice versa).

 

(now the very controversial bit, I'll probably be in 0.1% for this one)

 

     3. Semi anonymous channel system:

 

A) Creators and users are free to have superficially anonymized channels (name/photo of the channel)

B) Creators and users, however, must provide verifiable real world personal information (such as name, last name, age) in the event of a physical harm/abuse that they incur in the future on others.

C) Creators and users who fail to provide the aforementioned verifiable data will not be able to produce videos or communicate with other creators/users.

 

Features of the new system:

     

     1.Channel overhaul that includes the following:

 

A) Profile name/photo

B) List of videos/playlists...

C) List of friends (similar to steam)

D) Subscriber count (anonymized subs)

E) In-depth messaging system similar to (pick your messaging platform of choice)

F) A detailed sub forum for each channel with categories created at the discretion of the user.

 

Now this is isn't perfect (not by a long shot, as some of you have probably noticed some problem areas). It's an attempt from someone who has never been employed by YouTube or any other social media platform.

Pfizer, ATT and others have used comments on videos as a reason to remove advertising, so google has really no choice but to do something about it.
