Alphabet belongs to BMW

Internet domain alphabet.com, as well as the trademark Alphabet, already belongs to BMW and BMW does not want to sell. it is the name of a BMW subsidiary that provides services to corporations with vehicle fleets. A BMW spokeswoman said Tuesday that the automaker was not informed ahead of time of plans by Mr. Page and Mr. Brin to create a company called Alphabet and had not received any offers to buy the Internet domain or the trademark.

 

“We are not planning to sell the domain,” said Micaela Sandstede, a BMW spokeswoman in Munich. She described the website as a “very active” part of Alphabet’s business. BMW is examining whether any trademark infringement has taken place, 

 

Google is involved in the auto industry. It offers a version of the Android operating system for use in cars and has done extensive research on self-driving vehicles.

 

 

 

For all company google should have googled Alphabet.

I find it hilarious that people believe Google (now Alphabet) didn't actually research their new holdings company for names. 

 

I hate these type of articles. Should they care that Alphabet is taken? Alphabet is going to be nothing but a holding company. For being a NY Times article, I assume they would know that it hardly will be doing anything except for the buying and selling of (now) Alphabet stock.

 

Can't Alphabet, since they are not going to be the company involved with automotive, still have the name? I mean, the Automobile company by Google (jesus this is getting confusing) is going to be separate from the Alphabet holding company name.

Alphabet is NOT the new name for Google. Google will still be Google and as such will still be called and trade by the name Google. The only thing that's changing is that its Alphabet company that it set up will be used for other projects not google related (Dones etc etc). Google is not moving/going anywhere, its just a restructuring of the internal company structure (formally All Google)

Android is under Alphabet, not Google.

Google created a new holding company called Alphabet..

All their profitable business is still under Google..

All their non profitable business comes as an individual product under Alphabet.

Also Google comes under Alphabet..

So Alphabet is Google + other non profitable business..

Each product gets its own CEO.. Google got one, Nest got one etc..

All the stock of google is transferred from google to Alphabet, but the trading is not actually changed it is still GOOG

Yes, the new company can use the name, so long as there is not a Trademark infringement on the name being used by another company for the same purpose.  Plus, the word/name "Alphabet" is a public domain word, in the dictionary, so it is not somebody's unique name.

Thus, there's a fairly good chance I could start a company selling gumballs and call it Google Balls, and it would not be illegal, unless Google's trademark entailed the selling of gumballs.  Maybe this example would not work, but I recall from Law studies where examples were used where a person could create a company with a well-known "name" but doing something different, and it would be allowed.

When you file for a Trademark, one of the fields of the application is "for what purpose" is this trademark, and the government scrutinizes this particular answer.  You cannot get away with being generic.  And so there is a limitation on what the trademark applies to.
