GTX 1 060: giving "silicon lottery" a whole new meaning.

 

 

It's like it's not even about profits anymore. They'll let you confuse the new card with slower models if that allows them to be confusing :P 

 

Edit: they could also go with "GTX Schroedinger". Think of the slogans:

- The GPU that is faster and slower than yours!

- New GTX Schroedinger: indetermined until you open the box.

Hopefully if there is a GTX 1060 Ti/GDDR5x or whatever they end up calling this, the prices of the existing GP106 GDDR5 1060s will drop a little too. At the moment the 1060 6GB pricing is about $10-$30 higher than the RX 580 8GB pricing*. We may end up seeing the existing 1060 6GBs GDDR5 come down a little in price to match the RX580 8GB cards.
*(obviously there are cheaper cards on either side, like MSI Armor, and more expensive cards on either side like Asus Strix, but excluding outliers I think it's roughly about a $10-$30 difference between most comparable models of cards)

I think I would take a performance hit or higher price tag just to avoid the confusion

At least this looks to be a straight upgrade. So as long as they dont intentionally jack prices consumers are just getting more for free.

If this drops the prices of other ones then that again... only increases value for the consumer.

Rumors to compete with rumors... 

 

Given AMD are selling RX570s renamed to RX580... I imagine the RX590 will be the RX580... and to compete with that, NVIDIA will just rename a bunch of shit bump the clock nominally and raise prices so as not to compete with existing products they have. 

 

GPUs releases have been a bunch of BS for too long.

If the 1060 D5X indeed using the GP104 but still only 1280 CUDA cores, I'd be very disappointed. Like why? If all Nvidia wants is to empty stock on GP104 or compete with the RX 590 (which sounds like an RX 580 factory binned edition), all they need to do is enable more CUDA cores from the GP104 to say 1536, call it the 1060ti whatever, and slap a $250 MSRP on it. Suddenly the RX 590, even if sold at RX 580 MSRP ($250) which will be ~$30 less than "1060ti", suddenly becomes much harder to recommend.

On this platform I said before when GPUs were under deep waters of bitcoins, Nvidia GPUs are stock piled at Nvidia storage houses or their partners to take advantage of shortage of Graphic Cards in the market and competition AMD was over selling RX 480 8GB, so weren't able to control it. They used that situation to increased the pricing. At time all innocent people on site were like "You don't what you are saying" "Nvidia can't do this!" here is the evidence. This very old but real business technique.
