Beats becomes NBA's Official headphones supplier

Beats has become the NBA's Official headphones supplier, speaker supplier and supplier of other audio products.

 

Previously some NBA players were using Beats products without being paid for it so the difference now is that all NBA players are being paid to use the same thing they were using anyways before.

NBA superstar LeBron James features prominently in the promo for the NBA x Beats announcement, which makes sense in light of his previous promotional work for Beats and reported minority stake in the company before the Apple acquisition. Many wear the brand without even being paid for it, which has helped to cement its reputation as the favorite accessory of sportsmen in the US. A similar fashion has proliferated across European soccer fields as well in recent years.

 

Only reason i could see for this is to improve Beat's marketing and brand image but I'm not sure it's gonna help much.

That is the sole reason for this, and you'd be surprised what proper marketing can do. And as far as marketing goes, this is a good business move for Beats/Apple. 

With that said, I can't stand Beats headphones. Anyone with half good hearing can understand why. 

 

Also you might wanna change the title, it's not only for headphones. You quoted it yourself.

Yeah used to think beats made decent headphones then I tried a 100 dollar pair of sennheiser and realized they were far superior to much more expensive beats headphones. And that a relatively cheap pair of sennheiser headphones. You buy a decent pair of headphones form and decent headphones maker and they will be quite a bit better than beats headphones

I know it's a bit controversial but Beats don't sound bad, they just don't sound as good as other headphones that cost the same.

The BOM cost on beats is about 10% of the retail price. In fact for beats solo HD (the 175-200$ ones), the speakers cost about 2$. The margin after even the marketing has to be 60%+. Nearly a third of the BOM cost is the packaging and the total cost of the electronic components is about 3$. 

Another interesting fact is while they are typically not better, the Chinese knockoffs cost as much or sometimes more to manufacture. 

The things with beats is people like 200$ beats with a less than 20$ BOM cost as they've never used even 50$ headphones. They went from earbuds or 20$ retail headphones to beats.

The sad part is people that own Beats could have bought a really nice pair of headphones. I'll admit I had a pair only because they were a gift and when I got a pair of DT 770s I gave them to my sister. My mom thought I was crazy for giving away "such nice headphones" and she didn't understand how I thought they were junk. I mean technically they are nice in the sense of cost but actual functionally and quality wise they are junk and most people have bought into the mindset that the high price of beats = quality.

Beats is overpriced for sure at msrp but starting from their second generation, they actually dont sound bad.

 

The solo 2 actually competed against the sennheiser urbanite xl and vmoda XS and this was a review done by innerfidelity, a very reputable source for headphone review.

 

i’m not gonna buy beats because i already use headphones and iem that are higher end but people who wants bass galore on their headphone wont be disappointed with beats

I think bundling a pair of Beats would be good, at least give me something with that $800-1000 phone lol, but yep seems Apple doesn't want the Beats branding too close with their own line like the airpods. I'm actually kinda curious if Beats are still overpriced crappy sounding bass cannons.

It's really weird, when they first acquired Beats I thought it would be a fashionable iPhone paired with a fashionable pair of headphones. I thought they actually served the same market and the same person would buy both Apple products as well as Beats products. I thought they might even start putting Beats branding on their AirPods or make 'Beats edition' AirPods or something. Guess not.
