Nvidia's BFGDs pushed til 2019

Nvidia's initiative to push gaming-grade hardware into the living room was met with some skepticism back when they were first announced. If the Q1 2019 target launch holds, that means the BFGDs (Big Format Gaming Displays) will launch over a year after they were first announced, much like the fabled 4K HDR 144Hz monitors which only recently started shipping after being announced at CES 2017.

The first Nvidia BFGD displays have already been revealed, with ASUS set to launch an ROG Swift version and other partners like Acer are also on board. At Gamescom this week, the folks at hardware.info had the chance to ask Nvidia about the BFGD launch, receiving confirmation that the first units will no longer ship in 2018. The current launch target is now Q1 2019 but that could also slip, as we saw with the first 4K/144Hz HDR monitors, which were delayed multiple times before launching earlier this year.

 

The 4K HDR 144Hz displays launched with a very prohibitive price tag of around 2000USD, limiting their availability to the very richest of gamers. The BFGDs seem to continue that trend and even build on it, as they are expected to have launch prices more than twice as high.

I don't know about you guys, but with these insane G-sync monitor prices and the crazy across the board price increases for the new RTX 20 GPUs, it feels like Nvidia is opting to completely ignore the budget and mid market and pursuing enthusiast-level high-end gamers exclusively. Here's hoping AMD's freesync offerings and Navi cards offer better bang for the buck for regular folk.

I'm waiting for these to go on sale.  I want a 40" 144Hz Gsync 4K HDR screen.  I see no value in 4K at 27" or going back to 60Hz.

Well GPUs for 4k 144Hz are still several years away and obviously those GPUs are going to be extremely expensive, so the displays are just going to fit right in.

4000-5000 euro so 4600-5800 USD or or 6000-7500 CAD

 

Nice meme Nvidia/Partners, I can build a nice desktop with 3 gsync monitors and then buy an IPS tv for that much.

 

Except in reality I would probably not buy 3 gsync monitors, let alone even 1, Gsync is a meme

Not really. Sure, 2018 AAA games are not able to hit those framerates on a single card. But you can easily do 4K 144Hz on stuff like Overwatch, Dota2, CS:GO, and AAA items from a few years back.

Hopefully they have a DP/HDMI implementation that allows them to hit 144Hz without chroma sub-sampling, like the current 4k 144Hz messes use.

Lol, my 55" OLED tv is 4 to 5 times cheaper than that BFGD. And 2160p at 144hz? Any GPU that can handle games on 2160p at 144hz? That's a bit too much GPU power you'd need.

This. The barrier to entry for 4K gaming is why 1080p is still the resolution the majority of people use for gaming.

 

I'd argue that in 2018 even the 1080Ti is not a good 4K card. It's a great 1440p card imho but definitely not a great 4K card.

Just like how a 1070 is a great 1080p card and a 1080 is a good 1440p card.

BUT: You can also use Freesync with nVidia.

You need:

a) a "Dummy Monitor" + a Freesync Screen

b) an AMD Graphics card that supports freesync - like the RX 460 or RX 560

c) two x16 Slots (2.0 for the RX x60 should be enough)

 

Now you connect Your Dongle-Screen to the nV GPU. And the Freesync Screen to the AMD Card and have fun enjoying Freesync with nVidiia

I'm just lazy then,  I can afford a 1080ti and 4K screen, but seriously I haven't seen anything in 4K yet that has wowed me enough to ditch my old 1050 monitor.

Yep because when I think of games that look good in 4k I think of esports titles? Giving higher resolution to games that are created with the intent of being not graphically intensive makes little sense. 4k looks best on games that are known for amazing visuals like the witcher 3 or rise of the tomb raider. I mean esports games at 4k is like playing Minecraft at 4k. You can do it but it doesn't make the game suddenly have good visuals.
