Kia 2.4 DOHC is the same head as an Evo 8, get some good pistons and rods and you've got a budget turbo engine with a good head design on it. Eclipse peeps swap those onto their SOHC engines for running some impressive numbers without touching the lower ends. Like 300WHP and 11sec passes.

Got the motor, $200 and the only thing that was wrong with it was the #2 rod bearing got pretty cooked. The crank pin was otherwise okay, which means I saved almost $800-1000 on this motor!

 

I have it all torn down, the only thing still attached to the block is the oil cooler (since I don't have a big enough socket lol) and the crank. I took out the crank to inspect the mains but put it back in while it sits for a bit.

 

Just waiting on my other refund check then I can send the block and crank off to the machine shop! Also still waiting on the pistons to arrive... I got the Eagle rods and ARP hardware, can't assemble the short block until the pistons get here though... Been talking back and forth with Fab9Tuning, looks like a mix up happened or something. I should be getting them today though :D

 

Still on the list to buy:

-Gates water pump

-Flywheel

-OEM gasket set

-ACL bearings

-Billet oil pump gears

 

We're getting there! I cleaned up a bunch of parts already like the oil pan, MBSP, valve cover, intake mani (also deleted VTCS and EGR), oil pump, some brackets and coolant housings, etc. Seeing all these clean parts makes me want to put it back together sooooo bad XD

I got carried away buying parts at good prices, and suddenly turned into a wheeler dealer flipping stuff for profit. What have I become... ?

 

The E36 cupholders are hard to get in the UK though. After a good scrub to remove human slime, they'll make a few pennies ??

I got my alternator on the Celica pulled to take it to work to install the over running pulley on it, finally. It'll let the alternator spin on it's own when it wants to spin faster than the rest of the engine, takes a bunch of stress off the belt and tensioner at high speeds when there's a shift down and is supposed to somehow make it more efficient. All I know is that for $30 for the pulley on close out I figured I'll give it a spin, pun fully intended. My working theory is that not having 8lbs of mass spinning at 20,000 RPM coupled to the crank shaft when I shift from one gear to another is probably good for performance in at least one way. In theory the engine should be able to decelerate a little faster, I wish it was also an over-running pulley but it's not. Those let the alternator acceleration and deceleration lag behind engine speed to reduce the overall mass of the spinning assembly by a good bit, this only reduces the weight on engine deceleration.

 

Experiments are fun tho, I'm interested to see if there's any noticeable difference. I may also install the intake manifold this weekend if I can get the intake gasket fast enough, I'm tired of tripping over $900 in my spare room and having the alternator off makes it more roomy to work in the engine bay. So the down side of a lowered car is that I'm hunched over working on it and wow this hurts my back so much.

For sure, apart from one that shipped over with the cupholders, I just shopped around locally so my margins aren't as great as I'd like. If you know anyone in need, direct them to me! ;)
