Hello, recently I’ve tried to setup my gaming PC for game streaming to my laptop so I could access all my games and files everywhere I go but I ran into issues when trying to get the WoL working. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Enable “Wake on PCI-E” on my B550 Gaming motherboard.
  • Enable port forwarding to my PC with the UDP protocol.
  • Force USB power delivery when in sleep (tested).
  • Prevent turning wifi adapter off to save power.
  • Enable “Allow to wake PC” and other magic packet related things on the wifi adapter.

After all of that, I tried connecting using my public IP and MAC address but it didn’t work. I then tried my local IP while being on the same network and it still didn’t work (tried 3 different apps).

Important: I don’t have confirmation that my TP-Link USB U4E Archer supports WoL and no WoL settings were present on it but a Realtek PCI-E Family Controller popped up and all the steps related to the adapter were performed on this device.

Could anybody help me solve this issue? Thanks!

To isolate the issue, try sending WoL packets from another device on the same local network. If it works, then you can focus on resolving the public IP or remote access aspect of the setup.

Go to the router's page from a different device and check if the PC is actually on the network when shut down or in whichever state you're trying to WOL it from.

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

MKBHD is but an Apple propagandist and fanboy. Take his videos with a grain of salt, especially about anything Apple. In his video titled "I Visited Apple's Secret iPhone Testing Labs!", he has shown that he makes no effort to fact check Apple's claims, and takes it at face value. I do not believe he can be trusted as an Reviewer/Influencer.

I tried looking for UDP packages coming from my laptop using Wireshark but I coulnd't find anything. But I'm unsure if its the right way to do this.

So you're trying to WoL over Wi-Fi? Yeah that won't work. Use wired ethernet.

Do not open up ports for WOL. That is extremely insecure.

The way to do this is get another machine inside your network (could be a raspberry pi) to remote connect to either via something like team viewer or SSH, then use that to WOL your desktop. Opening a port to a services that is not meant to be exposed to the internet is going to be a very bad time… just asking to get hacked.

Also, yea, you can’t WOL over WiFi.
