Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

My miatas speakers are terrible. They are very muddled yet the highs are too high and when you turn both down it still just doesn't sound right.... I got it as good as I could get it but it's meh at best. So much for being "premium Bose audio" lol

but you know I'm not a crazy music person in a car at least so I just need something to fill the background noise so I don't go crazy on longer trips.(esp since miatas just like most cheap cars are kinda noisy) And it works for that. So I can't complain.

Agreed, speakers are horrible.  I also have the premium bose system.  I'm not a music person, but I'm a watch TV shows and movies while doing boring driving person.  and yeah, the speakers suck, at higher volumes they start distorting like crazy.  and the crappy part is the bose system uses some stupid 8" speaker, there are only like 2-3 options out there to replace them with something aftermarket, and they're all expensive.

I need to get off my ass and do my car pc thing, I'll prolly force fit some 5x8's in there with an external amp.  it'll still be cheaper than the 8" options out there.

Anyone have experience with ZF transmissions?

I rode in a bus with one the other day, they sound good but really 'kick' when changing gears, since it's essentially a manual transmission with a computer controlling the gears (no torque converter etc).

I thought the ZF was a traditional auto? And the other one was a DSG (double clutch)

Automobile ZFs are traditional autos (we have one on our Mercedes).

I was talking about the ZF Ecomat (which is a rapid-transit bus transmission). Sorry for not making that clear. ://

ZF 8HP transmissions are interesting. It's amazing what engineers are able to make.

'ello, m8s, so I'm starting to save up for a first car, and since I want to be a total baller on a budget, I'm looking at late 90's bmw 5 series'. Can someone comment on how stupid of a plan this is for a high school student? Or are they actually really reliable because of legendary German engineering. I mean I've found some of them for under $2000, and they look amazing. Questions, comments, concerns, interventions?

Buying a german car as a student is a risky move. (Source i've done it. 90s merc)

They are reliable as long as you keep up with the maintenance. And they don't break that often. But when they do it is usually expensive.

old german cars .... if parts are expensive ... AVOID LIKE A PLAGUE ..... they are tanks ... up to a point .... when some part of it is not maintained correctly.... it will need so much money in it that it would be cheaper to scrap it and buy a new one

^^^^ this mostly sums it up. but i'd watch out for surprise costs, like parts you didn't know you had to replace, and normally parts for german cars, even consumables like oil and filters are more expensive than what it would be for like a toyota or a honda. but you might be able to use the same oil from like walmart that normal cars use, and get away with cheaper costs, but i'd make sure that if i buy a bmw that you want, or any used car from a private party for that matter, you get a pre purchase expensive. because a car that sells for 2 grand might hide hidden costs that can equal more than what you paid the car for.
