Apple appears to be leading the wearables category, and by a lot. Dispite Apple Watches being significantly more expensive than other wearables; Apple has managed to make the Apple Watch a highly sought after and important part of the Apple ecosystem. 

 

I personally own a Series 2 and I definitely understand why the Apple Watch is selling so well. 

 

Furthermore, Apple’s success is probably also due to the state of Android Wear which is in my opinion, not even in the same league as watchOS is. (Well not really, Android Wear just probably prevents people from buying a smart watch and probably never makes someone buy an iPhone)

For a while Apple Watch wasn’t on top, but that slowly went away and reall took off after Series 2. Series 3 has only furthered that lead.

Not surprising. Most manufacturers have all but given up on wearables. The Fitbit is more of a niche product.

To be honest all the current smartwatches suck, It is like manufactures don't understand why people wear and collect watches.

I enjoy the fact that the Fitbit is more easily accessible for me than the samsung gear watches. Every time I go into the local technology store, I'm often told they have to be special ordered because there isn't a "Samsung" retailer per-se.

There are 2 types of smartwatches right now

the watch type such as the Tag Heuer connected and a smart type like the apple watch

Would you be referring to the design of today’s smarwatches? In Apple’s Case at least the consumers have made it clear that they are pretty ok with the square look. I personally don’t think it’s the best looking smartwatch but it is rather good looking compared to some.

Sick. Personally my Series 2 lasts for 2 days and that’s more than enough for me. I use it daily for tracking my swim workouts.

As steve jobs would put it, customers are stupid they need to be told what they like.

 

As much as I don't like the current trend in the style that is not what bothers be the most, most smartwatches just try and jam every "feature" under the sun into it which turns them into a stupid watch.

 

Things that make Watches great are their ability to track time, accurately(and other standard time functions); Reliability, not just how long they last but how they function in any environment; Low maintenance, most watches last years on a single battery or do not need winding or new batteries; quality, most watches are seen as perfectly engineered and crafted devices. Most smart watches fail on all theses fronts, making them stupid watches.

You are too concerned with the idea that smart watches should be like normal watches. 

 

You have to know that that’s never going to happen. Very few people care about real watches that much. The average consumer would rather have something functional, practical, and fashionable rather than a über expensive time peice that also leaves old good.

 

I never wore a watch until I got my Series 2 because It seemed like a waste of money. With the Apple Watch it does a whole lot more than keep time accurately.

If some miracle happens and it ever works with anything outside Apple's little walled garden, I might look at picking one up. Until then idk.

 

I don't really understand why people are buying it though? As a fitness tracker it's sorely lacking, it doesn't have the glancability of a normal watch, if you use it as a phone replacement it's sorely lacking and still relies on a phone for the backend anyways, and it just doesn't *really* solve any issues that it didn't create itself.

 

I mean I have a Huawei watch, and despite it being a super capable smartwatch, I'd never recommend the thing to anyone. The only thing *I* use it for is checking the time, notifications of work stuff, track control for music since I feel really stupid yelling "Next Track!!!" at my Pixel Buds over and over and over again due to their lack of track control.

 

Does the Apple watch have *anything* that a comparable Android Wear or Tizen watch doesn't? I mean other than the sleek design?

Their stubbornness in non integrating their software with Apple health kit doesn't help them.

 

For me personally Apple watch is a nice product, but I am old style analog watch guy and charging my watch every two days seems ridiculous

The only smartwatch I am thinking about getting it is Suunto because I go to mountains quite often and Suunto is the king for that kind of application. Also I don't want to wear my nice watch while handling with ropes, ice axes etc. because for sure I would break it really fast.

Integrates with the Apple ecosystem, has the best health sensors available, has an app ecosystem, has the workouts app, is highly customizable, higher resolution and better quality displays, Apple Music, can unlock your Mac just by being near it, and I belive no other smart watch locks if you take it off. 

 

Oh and it has a night stand mode which is pretty cool. 

 

And the Apple Watch doesn’t have a “glance” feature but it’s OLED panel turns on if you rotate your wrist. Really seems more efficient than just leaving your display on all the time.

The Apple Watch, by itself, is not. It's not more accurate than many other smartwatches with half way decent heartrate sensors, like the Gear lineup. An aftermarket EKGband has been cleared by the FDA that works with the Apple watch, but it's still not a serious tool made for use (or suitable for use) by a doctor for anything other than a quick hypothesis.

 

And it was only approved late last year.

 

So that has zero attribution to the success of Apple's smartwatch.

The Gears are just as good (they do also lock when you take them off and have nightstand modes).

 

It should still have an always on display as an option. Especially as there are times when the gesture hasn't trigged for me (although I've had that problem with the Gears as well).

Or when it triggers when you haven't done nothing. Basically EVERY device that has motion based gestures, phone and watch, has done that at least three times on me.

even got two people in my class with them

 

I've never seen an android watch.

I personally would have to disagree. Any time it doesn’t trigger I just tap the screen and it wakes up. 

 

I see no reason to keep the dispay on if you aren’t looking at it. All that does is waste power.

I shouldn't have to tap the screen. Usuaully there are things in my other hand that make that awkward and annoying. 

 

I agree -- on the condition that there is a gesture-based system that works 100% of the time, but there isn't. Even with a gesture based system that works 95% of the time (and the Apple watch still doesn't work that well with subtle gestures) I would still leave an AOD off to preserve battery life, but I'm not everyone and I can completely understand not being able to live with that.
