650W Be Quiet Dark Power PRO BN073 from 2009

Hi All

I am considering a new build and wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on whether an old 650W Be Quiet Dark Power PRO BN073 from 2009 would still be compatible with a new modern MOBO? The PSU has never given me cause for concern but I wanted to know if it would be safe to use a really old (15 years now!) PSU in a new modern PC build.

It's uh... one of the old school FSP's ain't it? Fine PSU for its heyday, but given that it's 15 years old and likely came with Teapo capacitors, I think it's time to put it to rest and move along.

What's the system you'll be using it on? I'd say get something like this if your budget goes up to $100

I'm looking at a system for around £550 ish

AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor

ASRock B550M-HDV Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

Western Digital Green SN350 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

Asus DUAL V2 Radeon RX 6600 8 GB Video Card

probably re-use my old Antec P1200 case (that thing is a beast!) but might be tempted to by something much smaller and lighter

With this sort of entry level Gaming PC I don't think I need more than 500-600W PSU.
like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09GW4S27Q?tag=pcp0f-21&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

Need to replace my very old PC and wanted to be able to let the kids play some games on it. Not interested in being able to play the latest AAA at 4K with Max settings. I'll settle for 1080p medium settings and 60+ FPS which I hope this will achieve.

Not bad but that mobo isn't great

If you're alright with getting a used GPU a 6650 xt/6600 xt would fair better

do you mean the P120 or the 1200? I couldn't find any info on an antec P1200

Will something like a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE fit? (it's 154mm tall)

Thanks for the advice and parts list.

My son will play mostly Fortnite and Minecraft so not very demanding.

The case is OLD its the 1200 and it's very big and very heavy! its got a 200mm fan in the roof so might fit a 154mm cooler.

I would be happy using the stock cooler that comes with the CPU though. Not looking to overclock. With three 120mm fans in the front, two 120mm in the back and the 200mm in the roof I'm sure it'll keep the system pretty cool.

i see that mobo might need a BIOS update. Can than be done without a CPU installed or would I be able to flash the BIOS update with the 5600? I am wandering if I would just get an error and not be able to boot into the BIOS to update it.

Haven't built a PC for about 10 years!

I use the stock cooler on my 5600 and it's not great, even with two fans pointing at it from only 10 cm away I get 70c at 40% usage in games. That's why I put the PS120SE

I used a b550m-itx/ac with my new itx system and I got in straight away without any bios update, you could get unlucky and get a really old bios version but since we're about 4 years into zen 3 I don't think that'll happen. Update the bios once you're in windows

Minecraft with shaders or mods? Or vanilla? Both these games are quite CPU demanding so I think it'd be better if you went with this for CPU (and you'll have to get the CPU cooler since the 5700X doesn't come with one) AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor (100-100000926WOF) - PCPartPicker
