I find it ironic that the very same "shady" marketing that Linus bashes, he uses for himself.

He bashes display manufacturers for adding multiple screens together and applying it to the vertical resolution metric. For instance two 4k screens =/= 4k, and three 4k screens =/= 12k.

 

Yet he puts the very thing in his video thumbnails to clickbait. I understand Youtube channels have to be clickbaity, but I don't see how you justify about complaining about the same tactic you utilize to increase your own revenue.

 

This is just one of the many ways he manipulates thumbnails, and one of the main reasons a lot of people can't take him seriously at all.

Just keeping this here as a Technically, the "k" nomenclature refers to horizontal pixels, therefore technically he's right. In the "8k" vr video he does mention that it's not actually 8k since the image itself is much smaller and it's not a single screen - but it IS in the marketing material, so using it in the thumbnail and title isn't any more misleading than the manufacturer is being. The projector setup on the other hand could be considered a single screen with about 12k horizontal pixels. Since he's not selling this to anyone I don't see much of a problem as long as he's honest about what he's using. It does state, right in the title, that he's using 3 projectors and the thumbnail shows what he means. I'm not a big fan of the ridiculous thumbnails but I don't think they are "shady" or clickbait.

The terms for display resolutions are often misleading anyway. The term "4K" only means that the horizontal resolution is approximately 4000 pixels, with the final resolution dependent on the aspect ratio. So yes, if you want to have an aspect ratio of 4000:1, you can call your image 4K. Similarly "1080p" only means there are 1080 lines shown in a progressive format, which again the final resolution is likely dependent on the aspect ratio of the image.

 

So in effect, stitching together three 4K screens width-wise is indeed 12K. Just at a 48:9 aspect ratio.

It's a stupid standard for measuring resolution, and I hate it, but it's technically correct  Nowhere in the "4K", "5K" "8K", etc naming scheme does it specify that the aspect ratio is 16:9, which seems to be what you're assuming here.

 

As for the Pixmax thing, there are a couple of problems with them advertising their TWO 4K displays as "8K"

1. 4K per eye is not 8k. When you're giving each eye one perspective on a 3D image at 4K resolution, that's 4K per eye. The projector example above is 12k per eye because both eyes are looking at the same image.

2. The 4K displays cannot even be driven at 4K by the Pixmax 8K. They are upsampled 2.5K (in this case 2560x1440). You need the 8K X in order to actually drive the two 4K displays at their native res.

 

As for all the nonsense in the YouTube comments about pixel density.. holy crap.. completely irrelevant and nothing to do with a conversation about pixel count.. and "12K" is a measure of pixel count, NOT resolution, and NOT pixel density. 

 

The reason the number of pixels is important to this video is that it affects how hard it is to drive games. The size of the image has no impact on this whatsoever.

I laid out very clearly in my post WHY Pixmax's marketing was misleading - there are TWO reasons that have nothing to do with silly "K" resolution measuring.

I agree with you that the marketing is misleading. I am not arguing with you there. but you made a point that it wasn't very ethical about them using 8k branding to sell their product when you use the same 8k branding on the thumbnail of the video. You are giving the same claim about the product that Pixmax is doing to get people to click your video. You are enforcing their bogus advertisement to gather more attention to your video. Why does the thumbnail not show 2.5k VR instead of 8k if it is not?

 

And the 12k is still misleading, but it is not as bad. It was just the first video I found that had the same style of advertisement.

Again how is it misleading? If it's roughly 12000 pixels across, it's 12K. It's the aspect ratio of the image that determines the final resolution. This is how display resolutions work in the industry.

 

EDIT: To put it in another way, there are at least 5 industry standards that can be called "4K".

So in effect, stitching together three 4K screens width-wise is indeed 12K. Just at a 48:9 aspect ratio.

Wouldnt it be  16:3 Aspect ratio sounds way more ridiculous then 48:9 though haha.

That sounds a lot crazier in those terms.

Who needs fancy graphics and high resolutions when you can get a 60 FPS frame rate on iGPUs?

Am I the only one who doesn't take thumbnails seriously? Titles have to be taken seriously sometimes as they tend to have gist of the video. But thumbnails are just placeholders to attract young people. Who are into shiny new things.
