Help with overclocking

Hey,

I have a i7 7700 ( non k ) CPU
And a Z170-Gaming K3 (rev1.1) motherboard
BIOS version is F23a

Would it be possible to overclock my cpu? if so, would it even worth to do so?

You can, but it won't be worth much if anything.  A little more oomph out of a weak chip isn't enough to make it worth while, especially since you have to work to OC a non K chip.

 

Leave it be  and save up for new stuff.

No. 6th gen has a BCLK exploit that allows you to overclock the non-K chips, but that was patched pretty quickly and thus not available on 7th gen chips like yours. You're pretty much stuck at stock speeds.

Non K CPUs can't be overclocked in the normal way. K series CPUs have the multiplier unlocked so you can just keep increasing this value until you hit stability issues and then find a happy medium between voltage, temps, speed and stability.

 

Non-K CPUs are locked in this way. You can however, do something called BCLK overclocking but you can't push things very far this way so definitely NOT worth it and BCLK overclocking is linked to more devices other than your CPU so you can cause things like you on-board SATA controller or wifi adapter to throw a wobbler.

Yup, it's limited to 103 at the most before the system will just stop booting.

Also, on 6th gen and newer Intel, the BCLK is actually split into two different parts: a PCIe clock that powers things like SATA controllers and such, and a reference clock that the CPU and memory frequency is based on, so things like SATA controllers are completely unaffected by high BCLK amounts. Its to the point where on 7th gen, getting to run something stupid like 200MHz BCLK isn't actually that difficult without stability penalties. The same should be true on Z690/Z790, though there I've seen POST issues above 150MHz, so I'd call that the limit.
