Meh. I'm still in school, and it's a public school. I haven't met anyone with speech issues related to devices. IMO computers are a semi good thing for kids. Yes, limit their time. Yes, don't allow them to get up to whatever the hell they want to do, but for me the internet has been a great thing in my life. Nobody at my school shares my passion for computer hardware / aviation, and places like LTT and the VATSIM network are a place for me to actually be myself, rather than hide my interests to avoid mockery.

HEADS UP, THIS ACCOUNT IS INACTIVE NOW

I'm keeping everything else the way it was for anyone who might check out my answers in future, but I won't be using LTT.

During the school year, my bus (unfortunately) stops at 3 elementary schools to pick up kids on its route. A few years ago the bus would be full of noisy screaming children, now it's full of children glued to smartphone screens. I don't mind the quiet but still...

You don't have to be a psychologist to know this isn't a good trend for children. I didn't have a smartphone until I was in junior high school. And even then, it was a free phone from my dads cellphone carrier as like an anniversary gift or something. Now I see actual 8 year olds with smart phones.

I don't want to be "that guy" but to be blunt... Parents have to take some initiative and raise their children, and not let technology raise them. It's not just cellphone use, but video games, too...

I think, like with everything, moderation is key. Technology isn't inherently evil, its actually quite good... But that saying "too much of a good thing" comes to mind.

Children spending most of their free time playing video games is probably not the best way to develop their social skills.

Personally, if I were a parent, I'd say no unlimited screen time until they're 18.  Let them use the computer, sure.  Let them have free reign with it?  Nope.

I don't see how developing an American accent is a bad thing. Not our fault if we have the most famous people?

I get the feeling that people said the exact same thing when printed books became widespread.

Having an American accent is not bad, however for another country, seeing it's occurrence rise in children does demonstrate how much language is being consumed/absorbed from screens/audio rather than from real life interaction.   Real life human interaction during development is considered the prime source of personality adjustment.  Ergo the issue is not that digital tech is bad, just that replacing human interaction with artificial social constructs from another country is.

But then we are now going into the realms of social science again and many tech enthusiasts only think they understand what that is all about.

Some people did, but the thing with books is that parents generally read them to their kids, whereas today parents don't sit down and interact with their kids on digital devices.

in short, I would say that effective digital communication demands a higher skill set than "old ass doomsayers" would suggest.

"Old-ass", sir. "Old ass doomsayers" would either imply old doomsayers talking about ass-destruction or doomsayers talking about old ass; not a pleasant thought. Also, you can report the OP for "theme" issues and a moderator will edit the post.

On topic: I'd probably have my child fill his time with social computer use such as playing a meaningful game, such as an RTS or story-based RPG. This should provide an incentive to grab a dictionary or allow the child to hone his contextual skills. I think the biggest barrier in schools is an ineffective approach at learning how the children learn. I was never one to play football or hand-egg (fite me, kiwis and fellow 'muricans!) and much preferred to while away my time at the library or TCG club. Twas tough as an introvert, but I was happily talkative when engaged in a fun activity. My accounting and math teacher in high school saw me playing at the badminton club and asked if I'd like to play for the tennis team. I agreed to help the girls' team with their season while reinforcing my own play-style and had tons of fun and talked to plenty of men and women despite introversion. Spring came and the boys' tennis season started and I was an ace(!) for the junior-varsity singles group.

Fun fact: I actually became interested in grammar, linguistics, and writing because of Pokemon and Dragon Quest.

CHILDREN soaking up screen time on an expanding array of digital devices are losing the art of conversation, developing speech impediments and even speaking with American accents.

no shit kids that grow up in the same area i grew up in have american accents now but I assumed it was because of immigration and american dominance of television, music, and movies.

This reminds me around the time iPads came out, about 9 years ago, stupid schools were asking parents to fork out for laptops and tablets because they feared the kids would miss out on digital literacy. They did not do any research they just blew lots of money trying to teach something that they themselves barely comprehended. Now there is evidence parents are using tablets to complement their lazy parenting; I hope my taxes do not get raised to pay for a socialism program to re-programme these broken children. You break your kid with your laziness, you pay for it.

methinks you don't understand what they are saying.  The problem is not the accent itself, but the situation that must have occurred in order for the accent to develop.   It means the child spent more time on screens than with real humans during its language development years.

We had a major issue at work, because of something like this. One teacher insisted that a certain part of the student laptops be fixed so they can give project presentations before the class via a projector. We're talking an entire school system worth of laptops, not just one school. This part, is on back order because it's an older model laptop, and lets just say that greater than 50% of the stock have this part but it's non-functioning because bad design + shitty children who DESTROY everything.

Nevermind that the students have to upload their project files to her laptop via "the cloud" in order to complete the assignment, where they could just use her computer to give the presentation, no, work has to come to a grinding halt because of this one idiotic teacher who wants each student to come up with their laptop and hook up to the projector. Because that doesn't take an asinine amount of time compared to what I suggested. (she already has their presentation files on her laptop so......)

This probably cost said school system a lot of money, considering they had to pay for each repair that was in reality, not necessary (perhaps necessary due to contractual obligations, but in reality the students don't need that part)
