I don't wear a strap and I have never shorted anything out in over 15+ years. PC components are hard to fry nowadays. If you aren't going to wear one then don't were loose clothing and do it over non conductive surfaces.

Oh you guys remember that one thread, where this guy took a 3 prong cable, cut off the top two prongs, stripped the came to find the green cable inside, stripped that, and attached the strap to that green wire? I think the thread was called "my awesome way to discharge ESD" or something like that

I don't wear a strap and I have never shorted anything out in over 15+ years. PC components are hard to fry nowadays. If you aren't going to wear one then don't were loose clothing and do it over non conductive surfaces.

If you work with extremely sensitive pieces of equipment it can kill them very easily more so than your motherboard and other components, with that said I just periodically touch a grounded source and stay off carpeted surfaces.

I'm on carpet, so I usually keep an old power supply under my desk, plugged in, and use it as a foot rest while messing around inside my case.

 

Better safe than sorry, really.

 

While I've never fried anything with static, I would hate to. There's really no need to add any more risk than there already is. Even if the current risk is already negligible.

I built and rebuilt and cleaned my system on a fucking shag carpet, don't give me this crap. Use common sense to not increase static buildup and touch the bloody case every so often.

I have built so many machines over the years and I have never once used a static strap, or lost a component to ESD. If you're concerned about ESD then just touch something grounded, like the outside of a (plugged in) psu or even the PC case if it already has the psu in.

May your framertes be high and your remperatures low.

working on the floor sucks so hard, especially for my back. I built a pc building cart out of a old microwave cart I was given. Being able to sit in a chair and build is so nice. I can move the cart or myself , what ever is easier. I had plans to build one from scratch with 2x4's but with the upgrades I gave this one there is no need currently.

how to avoid anti static for cheap, dont wear socks, dont work on a carpet, place psu in case first and plug it in, touch psu as often as possible.

I've worked with multiple computers, and I am yet to have a single problem due to 'static'. Living in a house with no carpets helps too.

I had one in the 90s that I almost never used.  I have put together and or worked on hundreds of machines from simple no frills PCs to high end PCs to Sun enterprise multi million dollar systems over 22 years.  I have never zapped a single component.  

 

One of the funniest things I have seen though has been at a trade show in 2000.  I forget what the show even was,  was some show in Chicago.  Turned out the PC the PR people grabbed and took to the show had no NIC card in it and no onboard.  So me and another guy in sysops went to take a NIC (really I just went to look around the show heh).  So my partner in crime so to speak takes this NIC,  opens the case and puts it in then goes to power it on.  Dummy did not even realize it was already powered on.  He inserted a PCI NIC into a running system.  It damaged nothing and worked perfectly.  Funniest thing I have personally witnessed in tech.

@marat569 I can afford many things, but even if I spend $50 on a component, not using a $1 (or less!) anti static strap as a precaution is the same thing a dangling money with two fingers over an open flame. Sure, you'll probably hold onto it, but why not be sure and stop taking risks? I don't want to lose any money because I was lazy or careless. I'm wagering you don't back up your data either.

Yes.  I have prolly opened up systems more expensive than 99% of the board.  Not that I am special was just lucky to work for a company in the early 00s that had a multi million dollar mail system using Sun enterprise 6500s, 4500s, 450s and a nifty little u10 as a head unit.  I replaced drives,  added memory in each of the systems.  Never gate a flip about static.  Just touched the frame of the rack before I stuck my hand inside and all was good.
