ESD/Anti-Static Protection

I've always been taught to (1) use an anti-static wrist-strap and connect it to the case, or (2) hold onto the case when doing one-handed things, and tap it before and after moving, placing, or removing a component. It may be excessive but it definitely saves you from forgetting to do it every once in a while.

Guys when i connect my anti static wrist band could i ground my self to a metal radiator pipe?

I used to think it was ok, but my dad who is an electrician said its not really a proper way of grounding yourself. So now I just connect it to my metal kettle.

Ya I usually just attach it to my case which is metal. I was thinking about getting one of those anti static mats but I'm not sure if those are necessary when you are wearing a wrist strap.

You don't really need one anyway though. As long as you don't wear a jumper, extreme nylon pants and a t-shirt on carpet, you'll be fine.

it will be on a glass desk and ill be building it on a chair with my feet touching carpet

What about your side door to your case?

I wear it on my ankle, so its just easy to have the kettle on the floor.

install psu in your case, plug it in the wall, leave it off, touch the case .....problem solved

I own one, used it once.... Removed it within the first 2 minutes.
It's just too inconvenient, preventing you from moving freely...

Nope, products these days are getting quite good at protecting themselves from static, and I cant be hassled with restricted movement.

No, never used one. I built two systems without one, my personal one and one for a friend. I was extra careful when I built my own since it was my first, but I kind of forgot when I built my friends, but nothing happened.

No, I usually ground myself with the case or something else that's metal around me.

It's not a dry environment here, so no unless I'm working on really expensive server hardware or something. Then It attach myself to the ground plug in the wall via extension cord. 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I've built/upgraded several PC's and never wear a static strap and have never had a problem. Although I'm always careful to earth myself before beginning and every now and then when building on the off chance. Never really had a problem though.

The reason I don't want one is because it is so complicated. Some people say just attach it to case, some say with PSU pluged turned off some say PSU plugged turned on. So manny ways, so I just touch my PC case without Psu plugged.
