The screen is big and beautiful. This tablet is crazy fast. It still has the same battery life, performance, and great app selection as any iPad. With the accessories, the Pro becomes a do-everything sort of device.

 

TIRED

Its PC-killing visions imagine a world in which nobody lives. It's really big. The price gets high fast.

 

In Apple’s mind, the future doesn’t look like a liger. It won’t be a combination of iPad and MacBook, or “the tablet that can replace your laptop.” Apple’s hoping that people who have never bought a laptop never will. It’ll just be the iPad. For the billions of people around the world for whom A Computer looks more like a smartphone than a laptop, who don’t have the muscle memory and anachronistic love of hardware keyboards, that’s not such a crazy idea. (In the meantime, if you want a laptop, Apple will happily sell you a MacBook Air for pretty much the same price.)

 

For those of us who still cling to laptops and desktops, the iPad Pro just doesn’t feel like a serious machine for serious work. We need our keyboard shortcuts and our mice, our apps that work just how we like them. We need our accessories. A touch-first interface just doesn’t feel right, and the iPad Pro can’t overthrow our existing workflows and tools. Maybe we’ll catch up to Tim Cook’s vision of work someday. Maybe. But for right now, we have work to do, and no time to reinvent how we do it.

 

Nobody’s going to toss their iMacs and ThinkPads into the garbage tomorrow and instead lay a 12.9-inch tablet on everyone’s desk. If there’s a touchscreen revolution underway, it’s going to happen slowly, an app and an accessory at a time. That’s OK. The iPad Pro is a fantastic tablet, not to mention the first iPad in ages that has an obvious value next to our giant smartphones. It starts as a big, powerful, beautiful screen, and with the right accessories and apps can be almost any kind of device you want. So, yeah: size matters.

It's best to think of the iPad Pro as a starting point, especially for iOS 9. These multitasking features are still brand-new, and there’s a lot of low-hanging fruit to pick in future iOS 9 revisions and into iOS 10. My biggest gripes with the iPad Pro are with the software rather than the hardware, and that means that most of them can be fixed given enough time and enough feature requests. It took Microsoft three tries to really nail down the Surface Pro concept, and given a couple of iOS updates the iPad Pro has room to grow into a more versatile laptop replacement without necessarily giving up the things that people like about iOS.

 

For the rest of us, there's still the Mac.

 

The Good: Excellent performance—the A9X is Apple's fastest chip by a big margin and the iPad Pro has double the RAM of any other iDevice.

Hardware is well-built and fairly light for its size.

Smart Keyboard creates a surprisingly flat, stable typing surface for your lap.

Nice speakers, especially in such a small, thin device.

TouchID and in-app Apple Pay support.

Smart Keyboard's keys provide a decent typing experience and happen to be waterproof.

Smart Keyboard is also surprisingly good to use on your lap.

Apple Pencil feels good to hold and to use, and it's useful for more than just drawing.

Pricing is mostly competitive with Microsoft's Surface Pro 4, though MS will give you higher specs if you're willing to pay for them.

Third-party accessory makers like Logitech will help close some functionality gaps for things like the Smart Keyboard.

Good showcase for iOS 9's multitasking features, especially Split View.

 

The Bad: Expensive, especially for a tablet, and especially if you're adding $250 worth of accessories to it.

iOS 9 has been out for two months, and we're still waiting for many apps to add support for the multitasking features (and, by extension, the iPad Pro's bigger screen).

Larger size makes it awkward for some iOS apps, particularly games.

Smart Keyboard can only hold the screen at one angle.

Needs a safe place to put the Apple Pencil and its lid while you're not using it.

Takes a long time to charge.

Missing a few nice features from the iPhone 6S, most notably 3D Touch and always-on Hey Siri.

 

The Ugly: iOS 9's multitasking is still limited and occasionally frustrating.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the iPad Pro is getting praise for its design.

But I feel like most of the reviews tend to favor the OS rather than the hardware itself.

The benchmarks are as I expected from Apple products and I'm not really that blown away by them.

 

 

My problem with the iPad Pro is threefold. First, I found it just too big and bulky to hold and use comfortably for long periods. And that was when held horizontally. Held vertically, it was worse, because it felt unbalanced to me.

 
Second, I was disappointed with Apple’s optional keyboard case. It’s essentially a shallow Mac keyboard, with keys like Command that mean something only in Mac OS X, but not a single shortcut key to an iPad function, like Home or Search. It’s also not backlit, and it has only one angle in which it holds the screen. Additionally, it’s so light and small compared to the screen that I find it difficult to balance properly on my lap for typing. It’s also really costly, at $169.
 
Apple’s keyboard is actually cleverly made, with flat keys that depend, for their minimal travel, on a special springy fabric that covers the whole thing, which means the keys don’t seem like individual units, but behave that way. I got used to typing on it, on a flat surface. But I just kept looking for shortcut keys that weren’t there. And I kept wishing for a trackpad, so I didn’t have to keep reaching for the screen.
 
The Logitech Create keyboard for iPad Pro, by contrast, has real individual keys, is backlit, and has a whole row of iPad shortcut keys. Also, it acts as a full case and is $19 less.
 
Of the three keyboards I used to write this column, I found that the MacBook Pro was best, the Logitech Create second, and Apple’s iPad Pro Smart Keyboard dead last.
 
Third, I found few apps that took advantage of the greater screen real estate to display panels or functionality often hidden on mobile devices. One of the iPad’s great advantages over other tablets is that it boasts 850,000 apps that have been optimized for tablet use. But few of these used the much bigger screen on the Pro. One example is Google Docs, which still places comments in a text-hiding pop-up window, instead of in the margin as on a laptop. One exception is Slack, which, on the Pro, moves a previously hidden right-hand menu to a permanent position.
 
You can get a lot more done with iPad apps than with the paltry selection of tablet / touch-first apps available for the Surface. But, because Apple hasn’t made a great keyboard, the iPad Pro isn’t a complete replacement for a great laptop like the MacBook Air — even for a tablet guy like me.
 
The iPad Pro will no doubt make a lot of Apple users happy, especially if they use it for graphics. But I won’t be buying one, and I don’t recommend that average users do so either.

It's still little more than an overpriced toy. No perks over a surface pro, incompatibility with any professional creativity suite worthy of that name, no ports to speak of and an unjustifiably high price. A touch screen macbook air would have made a lot more sense, price aside.

To me, it seems like a good device without a use case.

The surface pro line are good devices that suit a specific use case, allowing you to run powerfull software on a powerful device.

I don't see what you can do on an iPad Pro.... Maybe, just maybe it is good for artists but we don't know the digitizer used and the Photoshop app on it is doubtless not as powerful as a desktop application

Funny how by magic they like the keyboard, while it was trashed on the Surface line.
Of course, it is important for reviewers to be nice, else they won't get Apple next product early let alone ever for free for their review.

Also, I like how by magic, the pen is mentioned, while on the Surface Pro, most reviewers are like "What is this? ok whatever toss is in the bin and let's compare with ultrabooks".

The Verge says how the pen is fun to use, and useful. While treating  it as a bonus silly thing on the Surface line, despite having many professional programs designed for the pen under Windows.

Notice also, how so far no reviewers are complaining about where to put the pen, while reviewers are making it a big issue on the Surface line, despite having at least something: magnetically attached system. Not to mention that the pen on the iPod Pro cost twice as much, and you need to plug it to charge it in a way that the pen and the lightning connector can break.

To me, it seems like a good device without a use case.

The surface pro line are good devices that suit a specific use case, allowing you to run powerfull software on a powerful device.

I don't see what you can do on an iPad Pro.... Maybe, just maybe it is good for artists but we don't know the digitizer used and the Photoshop app on it is doubtless not as powerful as a desktop application

It's still little more than an overpriced toy. No perks over a surface pro, incompatibility with any professional creativity suite worthy of that name, no ports to speak of and an unjustifiably high price. A touch screen macbook air would have made a lot more sense, price aside.

not to mention... no expandable storage.

While I don't usually point fingers, you just used The Verge as an example. They may be the most biased page when it comes to Apple that exists. Seriously, check their articles or even their FB page if you want. 

It's like taking the review straight from Apple. Hwo knows, it may even be from them. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

These Geekbench scores holy fuck.

 

Also weird to see it as a dual core chip, since the A8X was a tri-core. But hey, performance doesn't lie here. It's crapping on this year's MacBook Pros in terms of GPU performance too.

 

Apple knows what it's doing with their SoC designs. Expect this level of performance from next year's A10 chip going into iPhones.

That was the draw of the Surface Pro for me. It's a tablet that you can do so much more on because it has Windows instead of Android or iOS. This costs more than the Surface Pro, an already expensive premium device, and doesn't even give you OSX. What is the justification in buying such an expensive iPad over a Surface Pro or some other Windows tablet?

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

It's sad to see that even Anandtech has jumped on the Apple bandwagon. Ryan Smith even said in the comments of the Apple Watch review that they treat Apple products differently from other products (at least in the way they do reviews):

"You know what Ryan, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt."

The short answer is that our Apple reviews have a wider reach than our standard technical articles. The range of readers that will show up to AnandTech for a MacBook or iPhone review has a much more distinctive consumer shift than say an SSD or CPU review. And while we still have a large number of technical readers (who are our heart and soul), it's also good for us to be visible to less technical consumers, as it helps them learn that we exist and, hopefully, come back to learn things that no other site can offer.

After that Joshua also went on to make an article about how Apple's Watch OS is great and how things like always-on displays aren't needed because the Apple Watch does not have it.

 

I miss Brian. He praised Apple as well but at least he praised them for the right things and brought up negative things. These days all the reviewers (even Anandtech) seem to not mention flaws with (Apple) products, then if the issue is fixed in the next model they bring it up in that review. I expect this to happen with the stupid charging/holder for the Apple Pen (not brought up in the preview). I think it will also happen with the Apple Watch 2 if they decide to include an always-on screen mode (I don't think it was mentioned at all in the Anandtech review, but he said it didn't matter in the "smart watch design" article).

First wave Apple reviews... when Apple provides review samples, the reviews can't say anything bad in a way that sounds negative without being strictly kicked from Apple's list. If the product for review is provided by Apple, it will almost certainly be a kiss ass to Apple.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

Because they are, in a way.

The Verge charges for reviews. That is why some product reviews has nicer presentation page than others. They are both paid, but one is a "premium review package". That we know, that is nothing new, that is how they make their money.

 

But aside from that:

Everyone wants to release their review first, it is a race to be first. In order to be first (let alone before the product is actually released to consumers), they request that companies to send their product. It fits well with companies as they get reviews of their product on day 1 of release or even before. As it is a review, in most cases (in other words unlike The Verge), they send their product for free to reviewers and before the product is released so that they have the time to review the unit and write about it.

 

Apple goes a step further. They have a black list of sorts. If your review is not to Apple liking, don't expect to receive your review unit in time, or at all on Apple next product. And that is the problem. As reviews attract viewers to sites, especially popular/hot products like Apple, reviewers tend to be quiet nice.

 

No one dares to be critical to Apple products, and good reviews pushes sales, making their product the 'hot new thing', which boost value of Apple products, which in turns pushes reviewers to continue to be non-critical about the device to continue to get Apple devices early, for free, in advance, and continue to get readers. It's a circle.

Funny how by magic they like the keyboard, while it was trashed on the Surface line.

Of course, it is important for reviewers to be nice, else they wont' get Apple next product early let alone ever for free for their review.

Also, I like how by magic, the pen is mentioned, while on the Surface Pro, most reviewers are like "What is this? ok whatever toss is in the bin and let's compare with ultrabooks".

The Verge says how the pen is fun to use, and useful. While treating as a bonus silly thing on the Surface line, despite having many professional programs designed for the pen.

Notice also, how so far no reviewers are complaining about where to put the pen, while reviewers are making it a big issue on the Surface line, despite having at least something: magnetically attached system. Not to mention that the pen on the iPod Pro cost twice as much, and you need to plug it to charge it in a way that can the pen and the lightning connector can break.
