New Windows 7/8/8.1 updates spy on you just like Windows 10

Everyone don't care about privacy as long as "it doesn't go too far". The thing is that everyone has different opinions of what "too far" is.

The last part of your post is just stupid though.

First you insult people who are fighting for your rights and protection, and then you go "they will hate me". Of course they will hate you if you call them stupid names first. Don't get surprised if you get hated if you throw the first rock.

Fighting for my rights and protection? haha.

In the words of Edward Snowden:

"We have everything to hide, but nowhere to run

But that doesn't stop us from making our own choices"

That choice is to uninstall the crap out of it

or hide (is hiding an option?)

I like his quote, saying you don't care about privacy cause you have nothing to hide, would be like saying you don't care about freedom of speech cause you have nothing to say.

Gawd, the US must hate he still has a platform to use his words, and has not been silenced.

I really don't care about the whole spying thing. As long as it doesn't go too far I don't care.

inb4 privacy whores hate on me

I don't care about no holds barred spying with 0 accountability from Microsoft that's basically designed to go too far as long as it doesn't go too far.

Right....

Unless you block ALL upgrades they will eventually switch ips without letting you know, the patch wont say they did and you wont know it happened. No that's not a solution at all.

Just because they are doing it somewhere else doesnt make it ok.

Just because we cant get rid of all spying doesnt mean we shouldnt try.

Just because we might not always win the fight doesnt mean we should give up.

I get that some people dont care as much as others, but it really kinda chaffs at me when someone says "I care about the issue, but oh well we shouldn't bother to try to fix the problem, because its really really big and that sounds hard"

Here we go again... and the 2 tin foil hats of the forum go crazy yet again for their battle. I won't worry anyway, is just a matter of time before someone edit all that "spying" or marketing data out of the systems.

Not the point, hate repeating myself please re-read: if enough people blocks em they can just buy a www.yomama.com.fuckyou domain and that's it, your "fix" is broken.

No the OS is broken by design now it suddenly is very important to have an old windows 7 or 8 ISO, install it offline and then immediately turn off all updates. Which will create some compatibility issues so really we should be just pressuring Nvidia and AMD to improve their Linux drivers.

Yes it's messy, harder to master, full of elitist assholes (like me) but it's just a better solution than this secret spying crap.

Or do what they are doing on windows 10 and use direct IPs, and bypassing the host file on the machine itself. So if you ever want to stop them you have to run traces on your router to see where the packets are going and block them there.

extremely doubt that many people know how to do this let alone want to

they are an extremely small minority

or just not updating would solve this

And starting in Windows 8, some entries in the host file will just be flat out ignored. They claim it's a safety feature because some malware might use it to redirect traffic to fake sites.

I'm not sure if you can still disable this, but you used to be able to in Windows 8 at the very least.

Thank God for @LAwLz coming in here and actually making some sense before the first page got overrun by trolls.

I've already checked mine and all the PC's I have in my house for these updates. I found a different article and someone in its comment section posted a bigger list;

http://www.hakspek.com/security/updates-make-windows-7-and-8-spy-on-you-like-windows-10/

KB2952664 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10 (sends a bunch of
telemetry data to M$, reported to corrupt system files)
KB2976978 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB2977759 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10, installs
telemetry
KB2990214 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3021917 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3022345 – installs diagnostic tracking service, reported to corrupt
system files
KB3035583 – pitches the free Windows 10 upgrade
KB3044374 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3050265 – supposedly fixes an issue with windows update, but also
changes system files to support upgrade to Windows 10
KB3050267 – prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3068708 – installs telemetry service, prepares system for upgrade to
Windows 10
KB2922324 – (reportedly pulled, uninstall it anyway if already
installed)
KB3014460 – affects windows 8 only
KB3015249 – adds more damn telemetry
KB3065987 – makes “improvements” to the windows update client (really
just more Win10 bullshit)
KB3075249 – adds yet more telemetry
KB3075851 – makes “improvements” to the windows update client (really
just more Win10 bullshit)
KB3080149 – adds yet more telemetry

I had only one of these installed and it was the W10 reserve update, the rest however are in the Optional area of Windows Update.

I've already decided that I'll be getting a 480GB/512GB SSD when they get cheaper and I'll just do a dual boot for Windows and Linux. Windows for gaming and Linux for everything else, if I end up using Linux more than Windows then I'll just delete the Windows install and not go back.

To be fair, many malware infections DO change the HOSTS file to redirect normal URL's to virus laden websites. That much is actually extremely common.

Whether that justifies Microsoft's actions is another question all together.

Good thing Windows 7 users have full control over which updates gets installed on their computers. If you have accidentally installed this spyware then you can easily uninstall it from the control panel.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

That's a stupid argument and you know it. If you got nothing to hide then give me all your passwords right now.

Just because one company does something bad doesn't mean everyone else should be free to do that bad thing too.

A lot of clothing companies have children working for them in sweat shops. That doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye to all but the biggest company who does it.

So you think it is good that Microsoft are making their older products worse? Why? Why do you want people to enjoy Windows 10 but you don't want them to enjoy Windows 7?

This won't make people enjoy Windows 10 more. It will just make people enjoy Windows 7, and Microsoft in general, less.

From my understanding though, what they collect is not personal data. The might know that user X has visited these sites and downloaded this content and likes to watch this kind of porn (went too far but whatever), but they don't know who user X really is. Is it right, or am I living a lie? :P

Internet history. What you download, install, run. No personal information.

INTERNET HISTORY? Alright time to explore Linux options (/s)

As long as they just throw the info in a big anonymous pool whatever. If they have your internet/download history saved, and they keep the information linked to your IP that is a problem for me
