The $20,000 gold Apple Watch Edition sold out in China in less than an hour

apple-watch-edition-gold-4.jpg

In news that should shock no one here, the Apple Watch Edition sold out in China in under an hour. Don't know how well it sold out everywhere else, but checking US sites the watch is showing "June" for delivery, then again EVERY watch I've selected has shown June as of 930 MST.

So yea, the thing has been selling very well. I placed my orders, whether or not I buy comes down to how much i like wearing it come tomorrow, but what I've heard personally leaves me optimistic that I'll actually enjoy it.

Bonus, the Edition and the box it comes in.

Apple on Friday put the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and Edition up for preorder in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and China. Customers can now try on and buy the watches, but the company says people will not get them until weeks later in the UK — elsewhere, it could be longer. Relatively few will actually walk out of shops wearing their new accessory.

Just hours into sales in China, there was zero chance of grabbing an Apple Watch Edition, the most exclusive version. Author Ben Thompson tweeted that he had checked every store there and at every one the device was listed as out of stock, but it remains unclear just how many units have been sold and shipped on Friday.

I failed to see how no one took into account that the Edition was obviously for the Chinese market, where status can determine self worth and superstitious reasons (red and gold mean luck and wealth).

Not that people in the US and other markets won't buy it. You could almost make a case for them being a sound investment. In 50 years they'll be hard to come by, and unique.

Not suprising to me. I expected this with how the Chinese market is for tech like this. Apple's a big seller over there, they make premium products that people want and the Chinese are in tune with the idea that appearance = social status.

IMHO the watch kinda looks like a cheap toy.  Not Apple hate here, just an honest, objective opinion.  If I was spending that much on a device that's essentially a fashion statement, I'd want it to look... different.  I dunno.  Maybe the pics don't do it justice.

Initially after seeing it, I couldn't disagree with you. There was just something kind of off about it. However, after seeing it for a while, it has grown on me.

Honestly I don't like the aesthetics of the Apple Watch, even if I did have the money to blow away, I just couldn't wear it, but to each their own. If you have the money, why not?

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
