Will you ditch your desktop if future laptops had more horsepower?

This meaning both cpu & GPU horsepower , & not nessesarily laptops but tablets or mobile devices also , as in nvidia grid solution. the Price doesn't concern you on this.

Details separate people.

Yes, but I would still use a keyboard / mouse / monitor when gaming at home

I already USE gaming laptops, and they are powerful enough in my opinion

My gaming laptop plays BF4 at 1080p 60fps on Ultra with 4x MSAA, that is perfectly good enugh

As far as tablets go, they COULD be that powerful the downside is we do no have the battery technlogy to power it

The question is.... If lets say in 3 years we can have tablets with 780tis... We will STILL be able to make desktops more poweful, since they have space for more components, do not need to run on battery and can get rid of a lot more heat

Maybe next year we can play Crysis 3 on our iphone... but the desktop will be doing holograms

Yes, as long as heat output wasn't an issue.

If it was reasonably priced and the power was there, I would definitely switch over to laptops or some other mobile for gaming.

However, I would still stick to a nice 27" monitor, mechanical keyboard and mouse.

Yes but with conditions:

  1. Lifelong battery
  2. Powerful GPU
  3. Powerful CPU
  4. Powerful RAM
  5. 3D PROJECTOR!
  6. Sleek Minimalistic looking
  7. Also a 29" monitor, and extension monitor which you can flip open to the right and left

EDIT: Also if it only outputs Cool Air rather than Lava

People who need mobility have already ditched desktops since theres very decent workstation laptops around, with non mobility CPUs.

Why would I? Space isn't a problem, I like working on my system so a larger case with fully modular components is always better for me. Laptops are too confining in that respect. Even if I could just put it down on a mat and have it instantly link up to my monitors and other peripherals I still wouldn't be able to get the best performance out of it, so I'd rather keep a desktop and a mobile device seperate.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Nah, need that screen real estate and silence you can't get from a laptop ^^

My next build will likely be matk or even mitx but still need that desktop feeling for real work ^^

I can't stand laptops, used tons of friends's, parents, other peoples.  They're just way to small and cramped up for me.  I like being able to sit at a desk, relax, spread out all my peripherals and have a nice big monitor beside me.  You can do this with a laptop to, but I just prefer having a nice big desktop.

No, I don't trust batteries. Then there is the keyboard and all other peripherals.

Even if performance was par and heat output minimal, I wouldn't do it.

I've done that switch once and came back. Left desktops to go to a 15.6" ASUS gaming lappy, then to a 17.3" ASUS gaming lappy. Rocked those for a combined 5 or 6 years. I do like the portability, but I'd rather the desktop where I can mod what I want, and constantly continue upgrading.

The best solution is a powerful desktop, and a lappy that can play light games.

I find my 17.3" lappy bulky at times, and would prefer smaller. That alone would stop me from going all laptop again.

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

Desktops will still be the kings for the foreseeable future. The just have less constraints on power consumption, size and heat. No way to get around that. I'll stick to a desktop.
