AdBlocker

Why pay for anything?

In video commercials are the worst, begging for likes, up votes, subscribing and commenting below is pathetic. I always carry the cell phone with me using wireless speaker to ffwd the commercials and only watch channels who havent sold out to bigly. It seems like some channels sold out more then others as some channels have more commercials so I follow Adam Curry's model for my viewing pleasure. Podcasts are cool, Spotify.

I pay for Premium. No ads, mobile downloads, and I'm still helping the channels I watch. Why not?

Do I need to pay? Of course not. But I'm in a position where I can afford to do so, and it's worth it to me.

I use adblockers and sponsorblock on desktop, for mobile I use both vanced and adguard dns to block ads everywhere else where possible. I don't care if I'm not helping channels I watch. I don't owe them anything and I hate ads. And please don't try and convince me that "if everyone behaved like that you wouldn't get that type of entertainment". Yep. I don't care. I'd just watch or do something else with my time. Anyone who's on YouTube started out just doing it for fun and turned it into a job afterwards, with the exception of media conglomerates muscling their way in. If you're a YouTuber and stop doing it because it's no longer profitable, someone else will come along and do it for fun. As with everything, YouTubers are entirely replaceable. On the flip side, I'm also not someone who feels entitled to get some kind of free entertainment out of somebody. If someone used to be a YouTuber and no longer wants to produce content that cheapskates like me can get for free without watching ads, I'm fine with that too.

And now a word from our sponsor: 💩

Ublock Origin + sponsorblock on PC.

Vanced+sponsorblock on phone.

Used to have some sort of script in a router that blocked most ads, desktop or mobile (via HOST, so not perfect).

But that router died, couldn't be arsed to set a new one up with unstable DD-WRT for the script, not worth it.

Ads yes, sponsor spots it depends. Some I don't mind and I'll watch if it's a produce I haven't heard of that I find interesting. But ads, ads can go right to hell. I don't want to see a 30 second spot for Palmolive dish soap in the middle of a documentary about the Holocaust.

  • 2 weeks later...

i used pihole for a while but once i realized it couldn't stop the ads on YouTube i stopped using it. Yeah it blocks the small pop up ads on a video but it doesn't have the ability to stop the 30 second ones that have the skip after 5 sec or the unskippable 6 second ads. If it could do that then i would update it and turn it back on but until then i just deal with it because ill never pay for a service to remove ads

paying for premium makes no sense when i can eliminate ads with blockers...AND there's still "official sponsorship" clips in many/most videos.  So I pretty much only watch on PC, and I'm always fast-forwarding past those "word from our sponsor" bits that are not exempted by any premium memberships.

I pay for YouTube premium with a nice student discount. So no ads for me. Also download videos that I’ll watch later. Then I use YouTube Music in my car with no ads that also comes with it.

I have a pihole, but that doesn't stop Youtube ads, so I do "watch" them.

I would kinda feel bad blocking them all to be honest.

I rarely go browsing random stuff on Youtube, just watch videos from channels I'm subscribed to, and considering how much entertainment/information I get out of them, I would feel bad removing the ads.

I have a whole battery of adblockers in my browsers, not just to remove ads, but also to remove all those insane clickable elements that pop up all over videos these days. No adblock on my phone but then, I almost never watch any videos on my phone. It's such a poor substitute for a real computer that it's more annoying than entertaining to watch anything on a mobile phone. I only watch videos on my phone when I'm away from home, and even then only sparingly.

So I'd say more than 99.9 % of my Youtube viewing time is on my computer, without even a hint of an ad.

ad blocker on desktop, ads on mobile for now.

Forgot about pihole, also wasn't aware there was a way to block ads on mobile (ublock origin & other extensions don't work on chrome on android among other things)

i've off & on been thinking about getting yt premium though ...

I utilize this open source android app called Newpipe. No ads, free downloads, and you can set exactly what resolution you prefer so Youtube can stop buffering trying to play 4k60fps on 1Mb/s. A few drawbacks, all subscription data is stored internally and won't present themselves in YT analytics. You also can't like, dislike or comment.

To be honest, I do miss ads, the peblem is Google adsense is lousy. I think it shouldn't be that difficult for Google to figure out that I don't speak Spanish, so stop showing me spanish ads.

I happen to have this revolutionary idea on how to display ads, you ask people what thy're interested in. If each user were required to subscribe to ad channels, you can be more sure that they're viewing products theycd actually consider purchasing, and you could charge advertisers by how many people subscribed to their ad channels.

I have learned over the years to ignore adverts.  I'm certainly not going out of my way or paying to stop them.

Yt isn't a big part of my day though.

I hate ads and I use Firefox with Ad Blocker Pro to block all ads.  Since Ad Blocker doesn't work 100% of the time.
