Apple ATT pushes advertisers to Android

Summary

Apple's app tracking transparency initiative has started pushing advertisers to Android. While the initiative was appreciated by consumers, it has not gone down well with the marketers, with many marketing companies shifting their focus to android consumers. Very few customers have given consent to app tracking(4% in the US market), and this causes problems for data driven marketing firms.

My thoughts

 ATT was a great move by apple, and it is sad to see marketers leaving the platform, disincentivising companies to push more privacy focussed initiatives. I don't think it will affect apple's bottom line though.

It'll be interesting to see what this does to the quality of the apps. I imagine it'll affect profitability in some form.

I imagine Google will follow suit soon enough, though it'll be interesting to see if this actually gains any market share for Apple.

It was creating problems for advertisers. I personally think that it is quite wrong that such a good initiative is being hampered by greed.

free* ad-supported apps are going to be non-existent. you'll have to pay upfront and hope that it's not useless

If Apple manages to gain market share, this would effectively strong arm app devs to accept the reduction in ad price, as iOS would represent too much of a slice to be rid of. 
 

However, if devs (that rely upon advertising revenue) move away from iOS en masse, or axe free downloads, this could incentivize users to move elsewhere. One or two devs, not a game changer. A majority of devs jumping ship, albeit unlikely, could be problematic for iOS, though unsure if it would be enough to force a reversal.

I am frankly fine with having a paid option. There are games like simcity(I am a bit of a simcity nut). Simcity 2013 and Mobile are pay to win. I would pay a 60 dollars to have a non-paywalled microtransaction ridden game. But companies want you to give them a steady revenue stream. Personally, I think that subscriptions disincentivize innovation(why create a new product when your old one keeps bringing you money)

 

 

I don't think that ios exclusive devs would switch to android. Most of the exclusive ios apps(goodnotes, procreate, flexcil etc) that are requested for android will avoid android because of the piracy.

In all honestly, everyone saw this coming.

 

The advertising model is done. Google wrecked it, and pretty much every ad-supported piece of content has been ruined by attempts to sell... what exactly? Chase people from your crappy game or app to another crappy cell phone game or app? Please. Ad supported content is done. It was done once ads started taking up more space on website than the content, and more time in a video than the video.

 

If an "influencer" can't get good sponsors, then it's time to stop relying on them as well.  Sell your own branded stuff, or just run Patreon/Kofi/etc and sell early access to the otherwise free content. People are going to steal it anyway, so you may as well draw a line in the sand where you want control over the content.

it can also mean repetitive ads. Especially likely considering ad prices have fallen

Varied or repetitive makes no difference to me, they're all equally annoying and misleading garbage that I want to see as little of as possible.

Junk ad farm apps out. Quality applications that developers are required to care about because otherwise people won't buy them, in.

i prefer paid apps to be honest. ads are so intrusive that i don't mind paying the 1 or 2 euro an app normally costs if it comes to that. what i have a problem with are monthly subscriptions to keep an app ad-free, because i don't use that many apps on my phone. 90% of my phone use is spotify, whatsapp, youtube and web browsing. i very rarely use native apps for things.

I'm sure there's more of you like me - If there's a free and a (one time) paid version of an App I like using - i'll basically always buy it. It's often £/$1-4 for most apps with two versions, which (maybe someone confirm) must give the developer more than they would have got from me via advertisments?

Yes, definitely. If they made more money from ads they wouldn't make a paid ad free version, or they would but it would cost a lot more than $1. Ads don't pay well, and the ads you see in crappy mobile games and such aren't likely to be high paying ads either.
