Redditor claim that the russian branch of nvidia canceled 30 series launch and scalped gpus

The original post was removed but I included some pictures from it.

 

To strengthen the claim someone in the comments said it says "...маровская ул, 5/1" on the receipt and on the official nvidia russian partner's website https://di-house.ru/delivery-rules it says "улица Костомаровская, дом 5/1".

I'm not really sure what this means since i can't read russian but maybe someone can read it lol.

Someone mentioned that the higher price could be due to the higher taxes. But even so its sort of shitty to only let people with connections buy the card.

 

I hope nvidia does a thorough investigation on this. Its one thing for a subsidiary of a partner to be scalping its another thing for a branch of your company to be doing this.

and the post that supposedly "proved" it was fake is just some generic PR statement that doesnt seem to have anything to do with the post

Reddit is not a source.

Russian news is unreliable, at best. Especially anything translated from Russian to English. Unless you're a native Russian and fluent English speaker, you don't know if the article is saying what it's saying, or that's just what the people reading it think it says.

 

For Westerner's, particularly those in the US, Canada, UK or Australia, where we have the benefit of English being the language the countries are most proficient in, we have to be doubly aware that what gets translated from a non-english language may be entirely without context.

 

Anything that appears on social media, or user-generated content (eg comment sections on newspapers, Forums anywhere, Tumblr, HuffPo, Twitter, Facebook, etc) needs to be considered as Entertainment first, not credible news sources. Unless the author is a journalist (not merely a blogger) who actively documents this kind of thing, you need to consider if the thing being reported is just the author's guess, or the evidence suggests something else.  Those who do investigative stuff, spend hours doing research, not merely posting the first thing that pops out of a speculation black hole.

The general consensus seems to be that it was partially true.

 

This is what has been confirmed by MSI, and it seems like people with sources in the business believes it to be true.

1) Nvidia 30 series graphics cards were being sold on eBay for way higher prices than MSRP.

2) The cards were being sold by a seller called Starlit Partner.

3) Starlit Partner is a subsidiary of MSI that sells refurbished or overstocked MSI products on eBay.

4) Starlit Partner somehow got a hold of some 30 series graphics cards and sold them.

5) MSI did not intend for it to happen and has offered anyone who bought the cards at a marked up price a refund so that the price becomes the MSRP.

6) Starlit Partner only got a hold of a handful of graphics cards so it was only a couple of cards that were sold.

 

Basically, someone at Starlit got a hold of some cards, noticed that they were selling like crazy on eBay, matched the other prices on eBay and probably though "this will look really good on our monthly sales report" not realizing what they were doing, and MSI had no idea that it happened until after shit hit the fan.

 

If you believe that is up to you, but like Linus said, he believes it. It wouldn't make sense for MSI to risk their business with Nvidia just to make like a couple of hundreds of dollars extra from eBay sales.

Even if someone who understands Russian translates it, doesn't mean it is real. 

If I printed out a fake Swedish receipt and made a post on /r/AMD saying "Swedish AMD reps are giving out free blowjobs to whoever buys their graphics cards" would you go "hold on, this might be fake or it might be true. If someone can translate the Swedish receipt which says 'avsugning' and if that means blowjob then it is absolutely confirmed"?

 

People on the Internet can lie. The OP's word and the OP's receipt are still the same source so it's pretty logical to assume that if one is lying then you can't trust the other one either.

There is airtight evidence for it. If you run the words "avsugning" in Google translate we actually discover that yes, that does mean "blowjob". So we have solid evidence that AMD are offering blowjobs for the discounts, right? Because nobody would ever just lie on the Internet!

Then a little while later, AMD posts an update on Facebook saying "sorry that our website went down. Our servers were not prepared for the massive load our fans have given us during this GPU launch!".

Wait a minute, they didn't address the whole semen harvesting rumor? If they aren't denying it then surely it must be true! Also, did you notice what they said? "massive load our fans have given us"? That pretty much confirms that the Reddit thread was true! Clearly AMD are harvesting semen from their fans! This is undisputable evidence!

The text on a piece of paper OP posted matches what he said in the Reddit thread? There is no way someone could lie on the Internet AND have the technology to print someone on an A4 piece of paper. No way.

The claim is that Nvidia closed their store so that they could sell GPUs at higher prices through other channels than their official ones. If they wanted a higher price they could literally just raise the price and keep selling through their normal channels. No need for this conspiracy crap.

How do you know that?

All we know is that Nvidia posted something along the lines of "hey, sorry but we have had to limit the number of sales on our store because demand was way higher than supply". There is 0 indication that they were responding to the Reddit thread you linked. Just because Nvidia posted an update regarding their store page a little while after someone made a random Reddit thread does not mean one was a response to the other.

An investigation of what, and by whom?

The Reddit post is basically just an upset and entitled crybaby that is mad that he can't buy an RTX 3080 and have to be put in a queue where he might be allowed to buy a card. This is basically the breakdown of the entire post he made on Reddit:

1) The 3080 and 3090 is sold out everywhere. He interprets this as "Nvidia shut the stores down so that they can sell the cards through other channels!" with 0 evidence. The cards are sold out pretty much everywhere because supply is way lower than demand. No conspiracy theory necessary to explain that.

 

2) Some people on social media have posted that they have been able to buy cards. Well no shit, there was some supply, not just a whole lot. Some people were able to buy the cards, but way less than the number of people who wanted to buy the cards. Is this really so hard to understand? If 100 people want to buy something, but only 10 exist. Then you will have 90 people without something, and 10 people with it. How this is a hard concept for people to understand is truly mind boggling.

 

3) The Reddit OP claims that the people who bought the cards have special privileges and basically cut in line to get the cards. There is 0 evidence to support these claims. Besides, it doesn't even make any sense. If the people who managed to buy the cards are just random people then clearly they don't have any special privileges. They were just lucky to be some of the few who bought the cards fair and square. If they are specially privileged people like maybe reviewers then it makes sense for them to have the cards. Of course people like reviewers will get cards before your average Joe.

 

4) Then there is some claim that a Russian retailer was selling RTX 30 series cards at high prices until Nvidia Russia told them to stop selling them at such high prices. No idea why you the troglodytes at Reddit think this is evidence of Nvidia being corrupt when it is clearly the exact opposite.

 

5) Then the OP brings up that if you call Nvidia you can be put in a queue to buy a card. Why is this something bad? That sounds like a good system if you ask me.

 

6) The OP then ends with what's essentially "Nvidia bad" without even explaining why. Again, it sounds like a man-child throwing a temper tantrum because he couldn't buy a new toy when he wanted to.
