I'm guessing this was done because people were putting troll subtitles? Either way, kind of a shitty move. Auto generated is good, but far from great, and they're almost useless on anyone with an accent or with videos that have music/background noise.

I've found auto-generated is completely useless with Cantonese Chinese and Korean videos. I don't have the greatest Korean proficiency but even I know some of the stuff auto-generated spits out in Korean variety shows is off target by a good margin.

I have seen waaaaay too many auto generated captions use extremely offensive racial terms to trust it. Apple censors certain words when you read the lyrics on Apple Music so I feel they could at least do the same

Maybe but that would be weird as community captions were already turned off by default; it would only be allowed if the creator specifically chose to allow it.

A news article on it I read the other day said that Google blames spam.

 

Which yeah, I could see that being a problem with it's LARGELY UNMODERATED, system riddled with braindead algorithms. They probably saw that it would cost money to hire people to actually read things and decided to axe it. This is why you don't rely on Google, for anything. They axe features, good features, because they're unwilling to listen to to anyone on how to fix things that people rely on, and instead end it. It's Feedly all over again.

once again you  have to question, how hasnt alphabet fired susan already.  i dont get it, once again youtube does something first without consulting the feedback of their creators. i mean i know part of it is googles experimental stuff, and probably they have a new ai they want to test, but why kill a feature, instead of keeping both. most videos dont have cc enabled at all, maybe enforce that, instead of removing a feature.

I feel like people complain about Youtube no matter what they do.

 

Community: How can these channels have ads on them? They are racist! Let's complain to advertisers so they drop ads from Youtube!

Youtube: Ehm okay, guess we'll have to start flagging videos they advertisers might seem as inappropriate. Also, since advertisers stopped working with us we don't have as many ads to serve anymore.

Community: What? This channel I like have to slightly change their content because it gets flagged as inappropriate? Fuck you Youtube!

 

Community: Holy crap pedos are commenting on videos of children! Youtube is a company that helps pedos!

Youtube: No no no we are not! We will delete all comments from videos with children!

Community: What? I can't comment on videos of children anymore? Buu Youtube bad!

 

High profile creator: The user generated captions are terrible. 

Youtube: You know, we agree. It is mostly used for spam and stuff like that. Barely anyone actually use it for its intended purpose so we'll remove it.

Community: Nooo this is the worst thing ever! This minor feature that is almost never used is suddenly the most important thing ever in my mind!

 

 

I don't think Youtube is out of touch with its community. I think its community is out of touch with how big Youtube is. 5 billion videos are watched every day. That is such a large number people don't even comprehend it. Here is a somewhat decent visualization of how much a billion is:

Now imagine 5 times that. That's how many views Youtube gets EVERY DAY.

 

500 HOURS of videos gets uploaded to Youtube every single minute.

 

Google gets well over 2 million DMCA takedown requests every single day. That's a 2016 number which I am sure has ballooned well beyond that. Imagine being hit with over 2 million legal documents every single day, when missing every a single one could potentially result in millions or billions of dollars lost (which has actually happened several times in Youtube's history, here is one of them).

 

 

Youtube is 99.999% reliant on automated systems to keep things somewhat check. It is simply impossible to do anything manually at this since.

I think a lot of people look at a feature like "community subtitles", see some top creators using it (although I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the captions people actually use aren't community made ones) and then think it's no big deal. What people don't see is all the abuse Youtube has to remove and gets complaints about.

If Youtube put in all the work and nearly break their backs to keep the feature alive then people will say they are overreacting because clearly the feature works just fine, right? If they don't put in all the effort then people will complain that the feature is broken. I guess in a sense it's like the pandemic. If everyone follows the guidelines then people won't get sick or die, and people will remember the whole thing has overblown and "it wasn't that dangerous because people didn't die like flies". If people don't follow the guidelines and people die like flies then people will go "we didn't do enough". It's a lose-lose battle for the ones who take the blame.

 

 

I wish I could find the Captain Disillusion video where he takes a quick jab at the people who always complain about how "Google has ruined Youtube" when those people clearly don't even know what Youtube was like before Google bought them. Sadly I can't find it right now.

I watch a few smaller korean animal tubers. They put their own little text edits into their videos but no subs. Yet they have some dedicated fans that are willing to translate the moonrunes for common folk like me and I highly apreciate that. And those small tidbits of text don't make too much work.

 

The reason that so few people actually use this feature is probably the realisation that translating a foreign language, and lining up the text with time stamps is much more time consuming than they anticipated. And if you pair that with no pay, rewards, appreciaton or recognition, then the will to continuously do that goes to zero quickly. Especially for voice subs that span several minutes.

I remember the auto closed caption generator kept calling MacOS Big Sur, Big Sewer.

Found it very funny for a while, rarely use the function if its automatic it can provide some comedy relief.
