What weird things have you done to precious components?

TheCoder2019

Here is a list of dumb things I’ve done. Expensive and dangerous.

  1. Peeling the pins off of my new Ryzen 7
  2. Destroying an LGA1155 socket
  3. Squeezing the life out of capacitors with a pair of pliers
  4. Throwing those capacitors into fire
  5. Throwing out perfectly normal RAM

What dumb things have you done?

As Someone with the username “</TheCoder2019_”, my coding skills are atrocious.

i tried filling a waterloop once that wasn't completely done yet. so basically i just drowned all my components in demiwater.

thankfully nothing but the pump was powered though, so i let it dry for a few days and everything still works!

Why does this thread reek of 'I burn ants with a magnifying glass'?

I guess the worst thing I have ever done was accidentally breaking off a connector on a DS Lite board.

It would’ve been even cheesier if you tried to reconfigure the loop while it was in perfect condition. That would be one hella mistake.

Took my dead ram to the shooting range and shot it with a few .50 Cal’s. It kept giving me memory management blue screens and I figured it was time to really explain how I felt.

i got a second stick of RAM for my laptop, put it in, and wiggled it, rubbing my staticky fingers all over it. i thought it was the end when i powered on and started getting rainbow colours.

i mean, i like to try different switches from time to time, but i limit myself to a max of 3 keyboards because otherwise my house would be filled with them right now. So yeah, i don't like hot-swap boards either, and that means i have to de-solder everytime i want to try new switches.

Stuffed Dry Ice into my loop for colder temps.
Took a CPU cooler and modded it into a chipset cooler.
Took pieces of copper wire and bits, soldered them up to create VRM heatsinks.

The list goes on here.

I tried to separate the ram heatsink from the ram but I ended up ripping out the ram die as well.

Except accidents I really can’t think stuff that really where that stupid.

I mean I don’t build PCs anymore and when I did i did stuff like splicing 3 fans into the same male molex connector (for you kids this was the main power connector back in the days and you hade no fan speed control, it either was on or off).

Cutting out holes in the metal in the case to be able to fit more case fans (you by default only had one intake hole and no exhaust hole because exhaust was handeled by PSU fan).

But I don’t consider those thing weird or stupid because they worked.

Also had a friend solder two ram expandions for an amiga togheter doubling the amount of ram the system could be expanded with. But that also worked.

Stupidest thing I did was an accident and that was dropping a cooler on my Athlon Thunderbird 1333 MHz. If you search for a picture you’ll see this is a bare die CPU. I chipped the corner of the die killing the CPU. I’ve mentioned this one in other threads.

No control chip on the module just ram chips so the computer saw the amount of ram directly.

Giving my old 280x gpu to a friend, having no display, and immediately tossing it into a trash bin. No troubleshooting, nothing.

This was just before the first crypto boom too, arghhhh!!!! It could have been recycled at least!!!

Cannot believe I even did that..
