As stated in the title : Do you have a dream?

And I'm not talking about World Peace here ? or about "flying" to the far end of the universe "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before..." ?

I mean a goal... Something you really want to achieve and are ready to commit time, ressources and who you are in order to one day be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say "I did it!"

 

It's ok if you don't. Some people will find very early in age something that will be their goal in life (and sometime this "goal" will change) and some people don't (ever) and they don't need one.

 

Me ?

I had a few, I'm working very hard at one of them atm (my daughter, project of a life time to see her grow up, evolve and become the person she wants to be) but I discovered recently a new one ?

well 2 come imeditaly to mind:

in the long run i dream of the classic family stuff. i have this image in my head of me my best friend firing up the grill in the backyard of my house while our wifes set the table and maybe the kids run around playing. very basic i guess but i feel like im far from it. also i think its just because im projecting from what i saw in my childhood. but yeah that would be the point id consider myself a successful grown up.

and dont give me shit about gender roles. this is just an example i dont care who sets the table. im just talking about having a family, house and my best friend having the same and us still being friends.

more personal and shorter term i guess idream of loosing weight and getting a little ripped. specifically i want upper arms where every shirt i put on is tight around the guns :D. i was working on that in college but have let myself go quite a bit since then sooo yeah i should probably get back on that.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

If I had to aim for something it would be a 25 hour work week. That would allow me the optimal work/life balance. 

Don't get me wrong, I love my job, but getting to both work, pursue hobbies and spend time with my family would be great.

Retire at 55 to a house on a lake in Wisconsin or Wyoming.  Fish and Hunt until I'm too old to do so then fade away.

Personally I have some goals in my mind when it comes to my career, more specifically what I would like to create.

 

I personally don't really like sharing these goals too much, in the past I didn't know the reason why, but on a podcast someone explained it so well it all made sense to me...

 

When you announce your goals or project, you already got the satisfaction of sharing it and thus have less motivation to work further on/start this project.

 

For this reason, I will keep it somewhat vague what my goals are..

Short term: continue work on a game project (where I oversee the programming) and create a certain fun Arduino/soldering project.

 

Long term: expand my knowledge and experience with embedded systems to my even longer term goal..

 

Longer term goal: I would like to work in the field where people create robotic limbs and such.

I wanna get out of my current job and sell high end audio.

If that actually is what i'm going to do in the future, i'm going to sell my products online at first and then make a very posh showroom for client demos.

I want to own a house with a nice garage and a project car or two. I don't even really care if they get completed, I just love the idea of spending an entire Saturday tinkering on a car and listening to music or the baseball game.

I'm pretty sure my purpose in life is to serve as a warning for others.

Right now it's pretty much make it out of college, get a job, 350z... Then probably a year after this I'll propose to my girlfriend. Wait until she gets out of college then (ouch ten years) and go from there.

I have had success with goals but not that much with dreams.

 

One of my goals was to retire and still afford my toys. So far so good.

 

Another was to become a 3D artist. That was a dream that started in the 70s and a goal in the late 80s. I didn't do it full time until 2005.

 

I was in the horse business for 10 years and along raising horses I raised chickens, ducks, turkeys and rabbits. The downs side was there was as much death as there was life.

My goal/dream at the time was the have the grand champion quarter horse stallion of the state of Florida. I made it to reserve state champion. By the time that happened the business was going under. The bread and butter money that was its core was from middle class working people being able to afford to keep a horse. One by one my borders could no longer afford to keep their horses as feed and liability insurance rose higher and higher and replacements grew fewer. I was watching the middle class dissolve before my eyes. 

 

Another dream was to get married and live happily ever after and that didn't happen either.  

 

In the end you can't win them all so have a few dreams/goals to strengthen the odds.

Honestly, I wanted to be an astronaut. Silly dream, I know, but I think the view of the earth is the second most beautiful thing I've ever seen. However I'm doing Genetics instead, which is pretty close to space.

One of the things I've wanted to do for a while is be a computer hardware engineer and make designs for one of the big tech companies (but not Apple). However, my real dream is to become a race car driver in rally, formula drift, or touring car races. Besides that, I'd love to be a car tuner and post videos of my projects on youtube as well as help other people with their builds.

I used to have a dream to "be someone" but I never knew who.

 

I became obsessed with finding out my "purpose" in life and in being the most authentic version of myself that I could be...

...I ended up learning that ideas of purpose are a construct and an idea people buy into for various reasons and that there's no epiphanic revelation awaiting me about who I am and what I'm supposed to be doing in life.

I really wanted to be something or be someone or just be anyone but me.

I don't feel that way anymore; I'm happy with who I am and I think I now really do know myself.

I did recently purchase a bass guitar with a view to putting in the time to learn it as an instrument as thoroughly as I could (I have a lot of time on my hands) and developing my own unique signature style...

...but, I got some worrying test results towards the end of last month and need to get more tests at the end of this one, so that's on hold for the moment.

It seems I might not have the time I thought I'd have, and working with a shorter time-frame made me think about all of the video games I've spent my life collecting but because I was so busy gathering them to me, never got around to playing...and it made me realise how much I wanted to play them...

...so I bought a new graphics card, some liquid metal, a new cooler and re-built my gaming rig.

I don't know how things will turn out and it might just be a "blip" as the GP said, but right now all I want to do is sit and play my video games...

...one positive thing that's come from it is that I suddenly appreciate this stuff so much more, rather than it being like the chore that it was before: building my "skinner box" to keep pressing the lever to get the reward; It doesn't feel like that now.
