Apple may be making its own modems, ditching Intel and Qualcomm

It would appear that Apple is wanting to take its custom silicon business even further than SoCs and GPUs and might start making modems.

Qualcomm and Intel could both soon lose out on Apple’s wireless chip business completely.

After switching from Qualcomm modems to Intel modems (and causing a huge legal war in the process), Apple is reportedly looking to build more wireless chips on its own. The company is staffing up in San Diego and based on one job listing, the team is working on a cellular modem chip.

 

Last month, it was discovered that Apple is poaching engineers right in Qualcomm’s backyard of San Diego. The area isn’t a major hub for Apple but it looks like it could soon turn into one of Apple’s wireless chip projects there take off.

 

With the release of the iPhone Xs and XR, which feature Intel modems, it was clear that the performance of Intels modems were subpar (though almost unnoticeably). Apple already makes their own electronic SIM cards that are integrated with their iOS devices, so going a step further and making the modem seems like a logical step. In my view though, this move is out of necessity rather than a desire. With Apple and Qualcomm being a common site in the courtroom, and Intel not being able to deliver good quality modems, Apple is left with few options.

In a job listing first spotted by The Information, Apple is looking for a cellular modem systems architect. The person hired will provide a key role working on “modem systems architecture aspects for the L1/physical layer”.

The Information‘s sources confirm that Apple is indeed trying to build its own modem. Such a chip probably would take at least three years to come to fruition though, so Intel’s current role as Apple’s LTE modem supplier is safe for the time being.

Because these things take time to design, test, and implement, don't expect to see an Apple modem in the next iPhone, but If I were Intel I would count my blessings because if Apple commits to this and it works well, then Intels days as a modem supplier for the iPhone are numbered.

Apple currently has a team Northern California working on its wireless chips as it looks to hire more people from the San Diego area. Former Intel modem executive Bernd Adler, who joined Apple in 2015, has reportedly been tapped as one of the executives to lead the Apple modem project.

Making its own modems would allow Apple to integrate its software and hardware even better together. By working on a 5G modem now, the company could address some of the technology’s biggest hurdles, like power efficiencies. 5G isn’t expected to arrive on the iPhone until 2020 at the earliest.

Apple going for that Vertical Integration like a boss, designing their own modem would take them one step closer to controlling everything in iPhone. If it means a net-benefit for the user, then I'm all for it. Maybe Intel can be convinced to make a quality product and shelve Apples aspirations before they sink too much R&D into and there is no turning back.

Damn.  I cant think if anything left for Intel in the mobile industry.

 

I don't know how much it matters but qualcomm has also offered ARM SOCs with integrated modems.  If apple doesnt get on that train either, they won't be able to compete cost wise.

They wouldn't do memory, but they already design their own GPUs. However, given AMD holds so many patents and they can't actually buy AMD, expect them to keep using AMD GPUs for a while.
