Samsung unveils GalaxyBook 2 with Snapdragon 850 with ONLY 4GB RAM for $1000 | Everything wrong with the Pro 6 and more

AlTech

Samsung has unveiled their new GalaxyBook 2 with the Snapdragon 850 with ONLY 4GB RAM and Up To 20 Hours of Battery life.

For those who don't know, the GalaxyBook is Samsung's clone of the Surface Pro series except they are traditionally low power 5w or less CPUs.

The previous generation used 7th gen Kaby Lake core m3 and 5w i5. This generation only features the Snapdragon 850.

This device only comes with 4GB RAM and only 128GB Storage.

The biggest thing it has going for it is the I/O with 2 USB-C 3.1 ports, a Micro SD-Card slot and a 3.5mm Headphone jack.

It is quite depressing that the Galaxy S9 Plus has better specs than this 12" device for a lower price.

Samsung today has introduced the Galaxy Book2, its newest attempt to create an always on, always connected convertible PC. For the new 2-in-1 notebook, Samsung opted to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 supercharged mobile SoC and rates the battery life of the device to 20 hours. Like the rest of the Windows-on-Snapdragon systems, the Galaxy Book2 runs Windows 10 S. Meanwhile, unlike the original model, the Galaxy Book2 will be offered in only one configuration (at least initially).

The Samsung Galaxy Book2 detachable notebook comes with a 12-inch sAMOLED display featuring a 2160×1440 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The device is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 SoC (four Kryo 385 cores at 2.96 GHz, four Kryo 385 cores at 1.7 GHz, Adreno 630 GPU) which is accompanied by 4 GB of DRAM, and 128 GB of NAND flash storage. The system’s wireless connectivity includes Snapdragon X20 LTE modem (Cat 18, 5CA, 4x4 MIMO, up to 1.2 Gbps DL, up to 150 Mbps UL and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

On the wired side of things, the Galaxy Book2 is outfitted with two USB Type-C connectors, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5-mm TRRS audio header. When it comes to imaging, the convertible PC uses an 8 MP rear camera, and a 5 MP front-facing sensor. As for audio, the system has a built-in microphone as well as Dolby Atmos-badged stereo speakers. Since the Galaxy Book2 is a convertible machine, it has the same set of sensors as tablets, including an accelerometer, a gyro, a light sensor, and a geomagnetic sensor. In addition, the system has a fingerprint reader for a biometric authentication.

And considering you can get a Note 9 for $999 with 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 845 (which is almost identical to 850) and better screen and cameras and just a better device, why would anybody consider the GalaxyBook?

What a joke. What was Samsung thinking? 4GB RAM for a Windows 10 device in 2018? Shave off a 0 on the price tag and then maybe I'll consider it acceptable but this is ridiculous.

Seems like it doesn't matter what kind of device you will make everything is absurdly expensive...

Phones are around the 800 to 1500

Graphics cards start at 600 to 1200

we have broken the 1000 barrier and now almost everything is going there...

Soon to be added the next gen consoles...( just guessing )

Positive Mental Additude!

Just another Tired IT guy...

I would say that it is a fairly logical thing, as thing can't stay the same cost forever, because of inflation and rise of the minimum wage etc.

While it makes you feel bad that thing are more expensive than 5 or 10 years ago, the time moves forward, so the value of money goes down.

Budget is still less than $200.

Nah, you can get graphics cards for like $90 new or closer to $200 for performance per dollar segment.

You are not going to game or run VMs on this system. 4GB is plenty.

Your phone needs a lot of RAM because it is an Android and runs Google's custom Java runtime, and Android is RAM intensive.

This runs Windows, and it is fine at running with 4GB of RAM

Not by the amount that things have gone up.

Incorrect. Windows 10 on ARM runs fine on a Snapdragon 835, a slower/older version of this laptop. If you run ARM based software it compared to Core i3 performance. The issue is when you want to run demanding x86 programs which gets translate don the system. The 850 should run them much better than before. The 850 is about 30% faster than the 835. People got Windows 10 on ARM running fine on a Rasbery Pi 3 which has a fraction of the performance of the older 835.

Absolutely not. Windows 10 dynamically adapts to the RAM you have. I have already done the test for this forum and showed that Windows 10 consumes ~700MB when you have 2GB of RAM.

No. I use Firefox. A better web browser.

And you would be using Edge on that system in any case on that system.

You want Chrome? MAYBE wait for either a Chromium branch compiled and optimized for ARM or wait for the Snapdragon 1000.. maybe..
