I don't think they will care about anyone using something more expensive than i3/r3 CPUs, they had enough time to prepare for this, I don't think they can parallelize games more than they currently can, now they can only improve physics and AI.

Well that's too bad. Plenty of hardware to use, but no optimization for it. 2017 struggle for gamers.

Its so sad that there are only 2 cpu companies and 2 gpu companies on desktop, look at mobile phones so many CPU designs all over the place and affordable to everyone, 120$ Xiaomi mi4c hexa core, 8 cores models < 200$, deca-cores 2-300$, and thats a full phone with a ton of other hardware and features. Yet a mediocre 4 core i7 7700k = 400$, node shrinking is pointless without competition, tehnically they can make a ton more cpu's per wafer at 14nm like 7700k than they did on 32nm 2600k, maybe double or more, yet they cost around same 350-400$.

How many companies design mobile SOCs anyway?Isn't it just Qualcomm and Mediatek (Apple and Samsung put their SOCs only into their products as far as I know)?That's also only 2 companies.

Heh, not every single task can be multithreaded. Some have to be serialized onto one thread due to the nature of the task, particularly ones that require information from another task to be computed before being computed themselves.

I know Vulkan and DX12 brought "multicore" usage to games, but did you look at the list of games that have DX12 or Vulkan? It's very short list xD 

Will have to do research on Mantle ... never actually heard of that one before.

 

And I know those CPUs will be expensive ... but Ryzen R7 isn't, and it have 8 core 16 threads. For 300€, it's cheaper than i7 line up, so this will be the new mainstream. Would be nice if more games would be able to use all of those 16 threads.

 

It just makes me sad that we are in 2017 and MMORPG still struggle to keep stable 60fps in crowded areas while CPU is at 20% load and GPU at 40% ...

I want them to change the old enthusiast CPU's to i9, and Pentiums to i1. Unpopular opinion but I like that naming scheme.

The TIM isn't crappy! They just use too much adhesive so the die doesn't make good contact with the IHS. If they use the right amount of adhesive, the 7740K won't have thermal issues. I know right? Like how on earth can I figure out the best way to scale any game that I have yet to make across even a 10-core CPU in DX12 or Vulkan since those are the only known APIs so far that has multithread scaling beyond 4 cores and 8 threads (with reduced CPU utilization for more headroom to do more things or leave it as is)

There's more to Skylake X than the 7740K. Think of the 6-18 Core CPUs, and they're not soldered. :/

They will be soldered.  The smaller 4c/4t and 4c/8t Kaby Lake X parts are just brought over to the new socket to give more folks an opportunity to transition to x299 from mainstream.  The higher core Extreme parts have always been soldered and we have no reason to believe otherwise with Skylake X.

Not what the article says, which is why it;s concerning. 165W with TIM applied badly could go horribly wrong.
