Hackers threaten to leak new Pirates movie unless Disney pays a ransom

Master Disaster

Disney CEO has gone public with the news that hackers are demanding a payment, made in BTC, from the Studio in order for them to not leak an upcoming studio movie

Quote

Film studio Disney has said hackers have threatened to release one of the studio's forthcoming movies unless it pays a ransom.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told ABC employees about the demand at a town hall meeting on Monday, The Hollywood Reporter said.

He did not name the film, but Deadline reports that it is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

He says they will not pay the ransom but are working closely with police agencies

Quote

Mr Iger said Disney is refusing to pay, and that the studio is working with federal investigators.

He added that the hackers had demanded the ransom in bitcoin and that they would release the film online in a series of 20-minute chunks unless it was paid.

This comes just weeks after hackers released the entire 5th season of Orange is the new black but there's been no indication the two cases are linked

Quote

Last month, a group of hackers uploaded the fifth season of Orange is the New Black after Netflix refused to pay a ransom.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth instalment of the Pirates franchise and will see Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow return to the ocean alongside Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom.

It is due to be released in cinemas in the US on 26 May.

Mark James, security specialist at IT security company ESET, said: "Anything that has a value will always be a potential victim of theft, either digital or physical. If someone has it and someone wants it then in theory there's a market for it."

2017 seems to be a bad year for this stuff, I wonder how the hackers got hold of the movie? I also wonder who will care about Pirates 5 anyway?

It's cool for now. They are stealing content I will never watch but they are forcing these companies to invest in infrastructure. Maybe all this shit will force CEOs to stop trying to make IT a high turnover profession and actually start investing in people

People who download the movies "illegally" are going to keep downloading them whether the studio was hacked or not. People who will want to see them in theaters/streaming services/blu-ray will continue to do so regardless. In my mind this won't effect anything.

And as Schischka said, this will maybe force companies not to take their IT departments for granted any more

the studios

I think leaked movies before the theater release will have a bigger impact then any standard BD release. they should try to prevent leaks before theater releases.

Maybe if it is the new Star Wars and they do leak it then it will have a Half life 2 effect and they'll say it wasn't ready and work extra hard on improving it.

There are worse ones than the third??? That was without a doubt the worst movie I have ever seen. I was working for Disney at the time and they gave our entire office a half day and tickets to see that movie. I wish I would have pleaded with my boss that I was too busy and couldn't go, because I have never wanted to leave a movie so badly. But no way you can do that with your boss sitting two seats down. There were 2 or 3 times where I thought Pirates 3 was about to end and I was overjoyed, and then it kept going and going. It was a cool gesture from the company (and Disney is awesome to work for) but that movie was torture.

Cool gesture? I am pretty sure that counts as cruel and unusual punishment under the geneva convention.

Cool, Early release dvd Y'all  #Lit , or this is a weird publicity stunt for a movie that is not going to be good after they reviewed it & they want to hide behind that reason to compensate for the presumed loss. yeah crazy!~

Details separate people.

Its sad that that hacker groups do this and consumers end up taking the brunt of the consequence. Content creators and the industry now all hellbent on shoving DRM down our throats.

The best part is that this has nothing to do with drm

If Disney is smart they won't pay. This will discourage further attempts, and also, the movie will be pirated regardless, like other movies.

So, the situation is the same. Those who will pirate would not go out to the movies and watch it in any case.

The thing that strikes me is that I can see Bitcoin getting a lot of negative attention from the world's governments with all this ransoming going through their currency. I have no real experience with Bitcoin, I've never used it, but I think they're gonna get hit hard with some kind of regulatory hammer eventually because I could see them being branded as a sort of black market.
