If the dies are too small, they won't have much choice. Intel still solders the HEDT chips, but consumer chips like the 7700K would get physically damaged over time.

Fair enough, at least use decent TIM then...not that crap in Kabylake...

I mean when you want people to OC your chip then you really shouldn't be using worse than crap TIM

The TIM is fine for what it is, what Intel uses is for longevity, not the absolute best performance.

 

If people like @Lays want to achieve high overclocks, they're probably going to use their preferred TIM anyways, regardless of what Intel or AMD uses. High performance TIMs like CLU see better temps, but they also require more maintenance. I'd say that's a bit unnecessary if you're seeing good temps on mild overclocks.

Why not just not have a heat spreader, and connect the cooler directly to the chip? There was a company that was working on it. You just remove the heatspreader and bolt the waterblock directly to the chip.

Also having the Ryzen label on it is cool, but too bad it will be covered up most of the time.

That's what things were like, way back when, in the dark times (not the Diaboromon induced ones).

The IHS also serves to protect the die from incorrectly installing the cooler.

That Ryzen logo on the CPUs looks sick! I think it would've been even better if they had the little black calligraphy circle around it but still, this is way better than what we've had before even if the IHS will end up hidden under a cpu cooler
