Retina being an arbitrarily defined standard. Defined by Apple of course. Is it fine? Sure. But it's also below what was standard in $400 phones 5 years ago.

That has been basically irrelevant for over 5 years. All phones over $150 are fast enough that you won't notice the difference. At this point it's just jerking off to benchmarks because it has no other impact on your experience.

Standard stuff for phones at or below that price range except for 4k at 60Hz which isn't as common. That pretty much leaves us with one feature that makes it worth considering while it gets beaten by pretty much every $300-400 phone out there. In fact, except for the camera there are $200 phones that match or beat it in terms of features.

Maybe not but then it should be priced accordingly compared to devices that offer more or less the same features but a larger and better screen.

I don't think those excuses are valid. Apple just doesn't care and people will buy it regardless. 

Not the screen though, and that is one of the most expensive parts when designing a budget oriented phone. Changing a process thats been in place for years or having options increases costs by a lot. Hence why the white color only has a black bezel/touch ID sensor.

Good value for people in the Apple ecosystem. There are still some drawbacks that people in the Android community might not find acceptable like the screen, but other than that, I think it's a good budget offering from Apple. Provides a (not used) iphone for a nice price.

I would argue that to the grave. Forced-fill top to bottom is the worst possible way to organize a phone, and nothing short of pure and total hubris on Apple's part has kept that in place.

I'd wager the flagship Android market is more hardware conscious when buying a phone. The reason I say this is there is one iPhone but many different Android phones to choose from. So you have to compare things like specs in order to split hairs in the decision process between which flagship to get.

For what it is, and particularly the logo on the back hahaha, it isn't bad at all. I have quibbles, and wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't Apple-only (at any price bracket atm), but if you are... cool stuff.

Not once on any android or iphone that I've owned have I given any thought to screen resolution, except to be annoyed that my battery is draining faster on the higher resolution panels.

 

This is a great deal for someone who wants a modern iphone without the flagship price, and isn't terribly bothered by resolution and bezels. In other words, the mass market.

Honestly i would rather prefer a k20 pro with a pop up camera and different perspective rear ones, potentially way better oled screen and sd855. The main selling point of that iphone is the chipset.

I don't care about bezel size. I do care about having a decent sized screen for a phone's overall size. I know they are related, but for example, I think the S9/S9+ is the absolute pinnacle of design still to this day (and will be until under screen cameras exist). Huge screen for the body while still have 'all ze sensors' up top.

 

A 4.7" screen in a phone the size of a iPhone 6/7/8 was not competitive in 2016. In a body 1/10th of an inch wider and taller than the iPhone 6, the S7 had a 5.1" screen. Both physical buttons, even more sensors on-top for the Samy. 

 

But hey, it has the logo so *shrugs*. It's good for Apple-only users. So that's nice.

I also hate notches as it just looks ugly and is basically the equivalent of watching a Netflix movie with your mouse cursor visible. Yeah. I don’t think anyone who is going to buy this is going to care about that difference. 
 

Aside from that, having thin or no bezels has its own downsides in terms of handling the phone. 
 

A lot of people love the 6/7/8 body design.

...but the definition is completely arbitrary. Who says I have to hold my phone at 30-40cm from my face? I could just define my own "Iris" standard and say that to meet it you need 60PPI - you could work out mathematically if a device met that standard, that doesn't automatically mean it's a meaningful target to hit.

Define "last very far into the future"... decent (even sub $300) android phones from 5 years ago are still perfectly usable in terms of speed and app compatibility. Apple has only once before released a phone that started below $500 iirc so it's hardly an even playing field in that regard and yet I would argue there's no meaningful difference in longevity, at least not in the last few years.

 

In fact, I would argue a device without expandable storage or an easily replaceable battery is likely to last less than a phone that has those things. A 16GB iPhone SE is arguably unusable now for a lot of people even if the SOC is technically fast enough.

 

Besides if you had $400 to spend you could just buy a $200 phone now and another one 3-4 years from now which would be much better than the SE in every respect, if you even felt the need to.

I totally get the notch hate. Personally I don’t love it, but I adapted to the XR quickly and it doesn’t bother me at all anymore.

Me: Yes. 
 

While not the sole factor, cpu performance was a pretty major factor. Having the device make mincemeat of otherwise unoptimized sites I use for work can make gathering information much quicker.
 

One time, I needed to grab contact information for someone while on the road. To get the contact information involved accessible the email site in desktop mode, a task that put the screws to my old device, making the site sluggish and unresponsive. My iPhone went through the site with startling ease, and I only needed to be on the side of the road for about a minute before I sent off my message, and was back to the commute.

This is a great deal for someone who wants a modern iphone without the flagship price, and isn't terribly bothered by resolution and bezels. In other words, the mass market.

Unless you’re playing games or running fancy UI effects (Apple’s screen blur is probably fairly expensive as the resolution goes up), I wouldn’t imagine high resolution displays to be especially demanding on the SoC.
