More Ryzen 3000 info - 4.5GHZ boost & +10-15% IPC

Seems like our friends at WCCFTech has posted more info about the Ryzen 3000 series based on 2 sources (Motherboard manufacturers). Both talk about a 10-15% IPC improvement which I really hope is true, especially for gamers as this is where they have been lacking the most. They also added more PCI-e lanes for a total of 40 PCIe Gen 4 lanes and upgraded the memory controller for better compatibility and increased speeds.

 

I little more on how they did this:

The launch window is pointing towards early July which is in line with the 7/7 speculations.

Apparently this is how the lanes will be utilised:

with 16 lanes dedicated to PCIe Gen 4 expansion slots (8+4+4), 8 USB 3.1 Gen 2, 4 USB 2.0, 3 SATA ports (4+4+4_ and an x4 Gen 4 PCIe Uplink port. The rest of the PCIe Gen 4 expansion would run over the CPU lanes.

I might consider this if AMD keeps to their promise of supporting it on the AM4 socket and it works on my X370 board.  Then I would sell off my 1800X

Gonna be real awkward if this keeps up...the Intel rep [me] at my location might end up with a '3920x' instead of whatever is replacing core i9 come 2020.

If it does exactly the same thing for like half the cost and is more upgradeable....

No, because that's idiotic. You're comparing a third gen to a ninth gen architecture. If Intel had refined theirs to clock faster when they're 6 steps ahead, it would be incredibly embarrassing.

 

Intel's 3rd generation of the Core processors stayed under 4GHz.

If it's flagship part boosting to 4.5Ghz with another 200-300Mhz in the tank allowing 4.7-4.8Ghz overclocks on average I will certainly be happy, combined with the 10% + IPC gain that will be a handy performance uplift from Zen+. Not expecting more than that.

 

On the other hand if it's 4.5Ghz maxed out that will be disappointing.

 

For comparison by moving from 14nm to 7nm the maximum clock speeds of Vega improved by about 20%. Talking about common max overclocks here comparing the Vega 64 to Radeon 7. Now Ryzen also is moving from 14nm to 7nm. If they achieve that same 20% uplift in max clocks for Zen2 vs Zen+ that means many overclockers will be able to hit 5Ghz on Zen2. Although personally I would be happy if they achieve 15% uplift and that's what I expect.

5GHz aren't off the table.

Look at the Link I provided. To the Chinese Site.

The Translation looks like the "normal Frequency" is 4,5GHz. That could be seen as the Base frequency.

 

Still I found it weird that they are talking about 40 PCIe lanes :|

but 15% on top of last gen (2700x) + lower power consumption + more cores + a bit higher frequency.

 

My last expectations were around 1GHz on my Ryzen 7/1700x -> ~3,5GHz Base, 3,9GHz max Boost (2 Core, probably short period).

And that one looks like its in that ballpark..

 

Remember the 3GHz Ryzen Test Samples??

Ignoring the incredibly dubious accuracy of Google translate, I have trouble believing that. That would put the base clock higher than the normal boost clock of any current Ryzen or Threadripper CPU and a full 800MHz higher than the highest base clock on current Ryzen processors (700MHz over the best base clock for Threadripper as well). 4.5GHz boost on some of the chips is easy to believe and might even mean 5GHz is possible on watercooling, on some chips. A 4.5GHz base clock would likely mean boost clocks of, at least, 4.8-5.0GHz. I would love that to be true, but its a huge change from the current limits of any Ryzen or Threadripper chip.
