Exactly. It'll be interesting to see what insults are like in 10, or 20 years. It's also not like insults disappear; people simply make up new ones that mean the same thing.

I get that he got really upset from being stream sniped, and I think Twitch could have banned him for like a week or whatever and he could have apologized for it.

I agree with the last part, people are getting too offended and won't even accept an apology for something that could have been much better dealt with than completely banning the streamer from Twitch. Although since Twitch wants to make a statement with someone famous,and have a no tolerance policy with no exceptions, there probably wasn't much other choice and like Youtube, Twitch has to keep their advertisers satisfied at the expense of the content creators.

Context matters. He didn't find a gay person and call him a "fucking cock-sucking fag". That would obviously be messed up. Getting stream sniped is probably one of the most annoying things that can happen to a streamer. People calling it an attack on queers and homophobic, i've never understood. 

The whole argument that just because somebody used a slur whos original definition is based in such things doesn't mean they actually intend those things. The overwhelming majority of the time when we use insults we don't actually mean the underlying definition or the thing it references back to. The term f*g in modern speech has lost almost any of its original meaning and just means somebody who's wholy annoying or disrespectful

I think that the most important thing is the meaning behind our words, not the words themselves. I understand completely, but I think that using that phrase or any other "slur" is fine if you don't mean it in a meaningful way. Especially in art. 

 

and I find the concept of "the right to use a slur" ridiculous. If my black friends call each other "nigga", why can't I join in? I clearly mean that in a friendly way, I just want to feel like I belong.

The word "fag" is a insulting homophobic slur. No matter how people in the gaming community use it.

 

Just because it wasn't directed at a gay person doesn't make it okay.

 

Would it be okay for me to call someone the "N-Word", as long as they weren't black? Fuck no. That's racist as fuck no matter who I'm saying it to. So why is it okay to use homophobic slurs in that way?

 

If you want to call someone an "N-Word" or Fag or some other socially offensive term in private? Go ahead. No one cares and as long as it's private and doesn't hurt anyone, it really doesn't matter.

 

But he said it on a public live stream. It wasn't just him and his buddies.

 

And I get it - he was mad. He wanted to swear. To insult the person. When I was younger, I too made the mistake of using slurs and other insulting terms without thinking about what those terms meant. But he's not a 12 year old. He's an adult. He should know better.

 

Now, I happen to like Deadmau5. I think he seems like an otherwise really cool dude. But that doesn't excuse this. And his non-apology really is just icing on the cake.

 

Stream sniping sucks. But that's no excuse for using homophobic slurs. And no, I don't believe that Deadmau5 is specifically or intentionally homophobic. But he doesn't seem to understand why maybe he shouldn't say those words.

 

And if he does say those words, a lot of people aren't going to be happy about it. Consequences of your actions, my friends.

The n-word is a bit different TBH. The reason why it's unacceptable is because of the history behind it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "fag" doesn't have a history of slavery behind it. "Fag" comes from faggot, which means a bundle of sticks, so IMO, it's hardly a slur.

 

And I would argue that outside of the US, the n-word doesn't have as much meaning.

Yes, he said it on his live stream, in which he swears all the time. Every other word he says on stream is "fucking" or "fuck". It's just who he is. Deadmau5 swears all the time.

Still think that a ban because he accidentally said one word on stream is too much. A warning or something like that would make more sense TBH.
