to me this is the closest thing to an ipad killer, and bit more pricier if you buy the keyboard also a bit bigger, but the extra functionality alone is worth it IMO

edit: the post was merged with a repost, somehow the repost post replaced this post, this is as close as the original since i don't remember the exact wording i used

If only the other thread wasn't locked so all that effort I put into my comment wasn't for nothing haha.

This new Surface is going to be very difficult to not impulse purchase. :o

Edit: Oh yeah, also impressed with that Surface ad video in the OP. A lot better than those old dancing ones...

I almost got excited but then I remembered americans don't include vats.. So that makes the surface 3 a 100 dollars/euros more expensive then I would want to pay for it.

Your post could've been a post on its own. This "I posted first" crap needs to stop. If only you could lock out people who keep breaking CoC on posting...but oh well.

This is one seriously great value proposition for a hybrid/laptop/tablet/whatever they want to call it.

Yes and no. The Surface Pro 3 has been out for a while. This is basically a cheaper/lighter/thinner/less powerful version of the Pro 3.

Here are some differences:

  • Surface 3 starts at $499, Pro 3 starts at $799
  • Surface 3 is 10.8" 1920x1280 and 1.37 lbs, Pro 3 is 12" 2160x1440 and 1.76 lbs
  • Surface 3 has three-position kickstand, Pro 3 has "any-position" kickstand
  • Surface 3 runs Windows 8.1 x86, Pro 3 runs Windows 8.1 Pro x86, Surface 3 is also including 1 year free of Office 365 Personal
  • Both get free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is available
  • Surface 3 up to 10 hours battery life, Pro 3 up to 9 hours
  • Surface 3 is fanless, Pro 3 has a fan but is almost never heard
  • Surface 3 runs latest quad-core Intel Atom, Pro 3 runs 4th Gen Core i3/i5/i7
  • Both have full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini-DisplayPort, MicroSD slot up to 128 GB, headphones jack, port for keyboard
  • Surface 3 uses standard Micro USB for charging, Pro 3 has proprietary charger
  • Surface 3 highest spec is the Intel Atom with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD, Pro 3 highest spec is 4th Gen i7 with 8 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD

I think that about covers it.

CPU: i7 4790K  RAM: 32 GB 2400 MHz  Motherboard: Asus Z-97 Pro  GPU: GTX 770  SSD: 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro  OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

I'm genuinely tempted to pick this up. Like I've always wanted a Surface Pro, but the price tag also deterred me. This one might buy me.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

3:2 is the Aspect ratio of all iPads, so I don't mind

I'd love to trade my Surface 2 for this. Windows RT was never given enough attention to be useful...(still can't record audio and type notes at the same time)

I wonder how much faster this would feel browsing the web than the Surface 2's Tegra 4?

iPad is actually 4:3, which imo is too square to be useful in anything other than portrait.

OT: Yay, another thing I can't afford!

Doesn't seems to be enough of a price different for the gimped processor specially since it's expected to run full OS versions of software. Though I might be completely wrong.

It seemed perfect at first, but then I saw a few deal breaks for me. It's such a shame because this is the closest thing we have had to a perfect tablet in a very long time now.

The screen is almost perfect.

214 PPI is just not enough for such a high price. You can get much cheaper tablets with higher PPI. I want 300 or preferably more. It makes a big difference.

I want to hug whoever decided that it should be a 3:2 display though. Thank you so much for not going with the retarded 4:3 aspect ratio. Two thumbs up.

Microsoft seemed to have done a good job with the Surface 3 Pro display in terms of color quality before so I am not too worried about that part. It's just the PPI that bothers me.

I am not up to date with Intel Atom processors. How does the GPU in the X7 stack up against for example the Adreno 420 and the Mali T760?

Only having 2GB of RAM (unless you get the 128GB model) is a big blow as well. Why Microsoft? Why? It costs next to nothing for you to upgrade the RAM from 2 to 4GB, so why do you force me to spend 100 dollars more on it? I think 2GB of RAM is not enough on my Android tablet, and that's without running heavier x86 programs. 2GB will be painful to use.

It's great to see 64GB as the lowest end option but that price kind of kills it...

Full size USB 3.0 is a big plus but I would have liked to see USB 3.1 with a type-C connector. I don't get why Google, Apple and Nokia are the only 3 companies with type-c connectors.

The speakers should be on the front. It's not the end of the world but it's far from optimal.

The size and weight seems very good, especially for what's essentially a full blown laptop.

It sucks that the pen and type cover are sold separately because the keyboard is pretty much mandatory for it. Windows 8.1 is not a good tablet OS so you will probably spend a lot of time on the desktop, and for that you want a trackpad and a keyboard. So the price of this, if you want to use it properly, will be 630 dollars. I think it should have been 500 with the keyboard and pen. That would have been great.

the chip is brand new, this is the first device to ship with it(unless someone releases something before may 5) im guessing performance should be a lite less that core m since this is what comes under it, I'm waiting for anandtech review
