Ads On Netflix?

Crab Puncher
Quote

Netflix’s latest test feature is a video promo that plays in between episodes of a series you’re watching. The test is only appearing for select users globally and it’s a full-screen video of content Netflix’s algorithms are recommending to a viewer

As someone who left cable TV to Netflix and other streaming services because the ads are so annoying is quite infuriating. My stance on it is that your paying money to watch TV not ads. But luckily not only is it temporary the ads are skippable. Sadly this might spread and become a permanent feature. If this does not effect netflix's bottom line then other streaming companies that currently don't have ads will most likely follow suit. There excuse is, "cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster." If I need something to watch I will just go to the recommended tab why can't they just put the shows they want us to watch there? Hmmmmmm. What are your thoughts?

Fair. I mean, let's face it, it's significantly cheaper than what cable was. Shit isn't free. Their productions are massively expensive.

It’s hard to be mad when you get so much for the money. Most channels are charging $6-10 just for their content (Disney, CBS, etc) and it’s $40 for Youtube TV and Hulu plus.

Since when is displaying ads a "feature"? I sure hope that isn't Netflix's verbiage...

Meanwhile their UI is such dogshit, that you need to use a third-party site (e.g. https://flixable.com/) to actually sort through their catalogue in any reasonable fashion. Also, fuck ads - if this becomes a permanent feature and they, in any way (even if it's just those 5 second ads), get in the way of me watching whatever show I'm watching, I'll find that show elsewhere. There's a reason I use an adblocker everywhere and don't have cable: I value my time far more than I value a company's profits.

People are blowing this out of proportion, I personally like it as usually I would browse aimlessly trying to find something to watch. These aren’t advertisements in the traditional sense, they are recommending you shows based off what you usually watch.

It's always a Trust Issue with this type of stuff.

The Pro side is pretty clear: some algo-based series suggestion that you can skip are valuable. See the YouTube Suggestions for how a lot of people find their video content.

Con side is also clear: why should you trust Netflix to not just start putting real Ads between episodes?

This is one of those situations where acting like a faceless corporation could cause Netflix massive trouble.

Well considering how most western movies are chock full of blatant product placement (they're not even trying to hide or blend them in discretely), you're basically watching glorified ads in the first place.

So Netflix wants to go the way of Foxtel then. Which had people I know stop using it because they bought it originally avoid ads (that and the content on the channels became mostly terrible)

The underlying theme is that they’re trying to retain membership, sure. But ultimately they’re showing you shows that you have interest in, and you can skip them if you don’t want to see it, as well as opt-out.

I get the point they are "nicer" ads, but youtube also make "nicer" ads (if you let them). A few of those ads are for their own products or services.

I get what netflix is doing, but it doesnt make these things any less of an add than it is

Mabye if its like a banner ad or really short, im fine. Any more than 5 secs and im going to somewhere else.

It's not acceptable at all. We pay for this service already - when will people recognise having ads for a paid service is just money grabbing, as is paying for unreleased games and micro-transactions. It's just blatant.

I don't mind if:

- I can opt-out of this "feature that is only meant to help me find new stuff"

I do mind:

- if it just copies my recommended tab

- I can't opt-out

- it is only the beginning of more annoying ads

They better make sure it is the first version. When they claim it is a feature to help me, better make sure I can turn it off. Sadly, there is no alternative to Netflix, so I can't really say I would leave if it is indeed as annoying as people fear it to be. I mean, where would I go to? Pretty much all the stuff I actually do watch is Netflix Originals. They nail my wives and my interests more often than not.

TV and internet are both paid services and yet they are filled with ads.You as a consumer say what shouldn't be done, there's always piracy.

Well not all TV channels have ads and not all website have ads...

And internet is more than just websites.

Thing is, TV isn't managed by 1 company and neither is the internet. A lot of companies work together to make it work.

Netflix however is managed by, netflix... And you pay netflix to use netflix, and netflix decides to make this change i can understand why people are angry at netflix because consumers believe netflix shouldn't do that, which is fine because it is indeed only up to netflix to decide to revert the change or not.

I don't need some ads on my favourite television series or movies, especially when I pay for a service that I normally tend not to find any kind of advertisement. If they do come on Netflix, then I hope that the adblock extensions will do their job.

Few options.

Some of them are just music with their clips and some of them are subsidized by the gov.

Non-commercial tv channels do exist and watching tv without commercial breaks is really underrated. Once you are used to it other channels that do have commercial breaks are so annoying i usually just give up watching TV completely for a few days/weeks.
