Tests Confirm Apple's Throttling Fix Improves Performance for 2018 MacBook Pro Models

Seems like the bug fix released in the high Sierra update has significantly improved the throttling issue. Perhaps an update live stream or video would be nice with Linus testing this and addressing the fix.

Using the same Adobe Premiere render time test, Lee found that the Core i9 MacBook Pro was significantly faster than the 2017 Core i7 model that had beaten it prior to the patch.

it doesn't throttle so much and you get a steady line but do you really want to run a insanely expensive laptop (and hard to fix, and bad warranty, and no parts,...) at a steady 91.6ºC :o

It was throttling for a reason, now it's a toaster.

I think people forget macbooks have always ran very hot. The ones from 2008 hit 100C easy with no throttling

I mostly agree with you, but a comparison of other laptops with the same chip would be interesting. I also dont think it's fair to say that it's going to be running at 92ºC majority of the time, would highly depend on your workload. For the form factor, is there any other laptops that do better?

YES! my 2008-2009 15" literally ran over 100C frequently, even after cleaning the fan and changing the thermal compounds, but it lasted me like 6 years.

There isn't that dramatic spike in clockspeeds anymore. They still vary but at a far more reasonable level.

you also have to consider that they aren't using the GPU (at least i don't think so). Using booth would probably escalate the problem.

I don't think this CPU should ever be put into those type of laptops. This could be the best of the worst but that is no consolation.

This is why you never buy an apple product. The good news is that as hot as these run the people buying them won't be able to reproduce in a few months (assuming they actually use them as a LAP top)

Yeah, this is hardly a fix,but Apple using their fancy buzzwords calling it a "digital key" and the Apple sided media agrees it's fixed even though now the CPU runs at an average lower clockspeed and still too hot?

I thought in certain tests they were, but I'm not sure. You might be right. Apple definitely just didn't want to redesign the thermal solution since they know the number of people who will spend money for the i9 is going to be small, but that's very disappointing.

Not really.

 

The heating problem still remains but the one difference is that there isn't that huge spike in frequencies, where the CPU tries to turbo but falls into either TJunction or VRM limits.

 

It's not a complete fix, but it does at least help with one of those issues

 

The actual fix is a revamped cooler, but knowing them, it won't happen until the redesign, which won't happen for another 2 years at least

Glad they fixed the problem and wasn't a a complete hardware oversight like how it seemed to be. Sure, could the thermals be better? Definitely, but it would come at the cost of Apple's philosophy of sleekness and silent laptop. And we all know Apple would prefer to force underlying technologies to adapt to their vision, rather than building something ideal for today's technological capabilities

Yes, it improves... but the CPU is nearly always on its base clock, and therefore other systems with Core i9 performs better.

The reality is that Apple went cheap, they didn't want to make a special larger heatsink solution of the i9, but then the price of  the system is sold as if they have done such. That is the issue.

 

Apple "fix" is not a fix.

I think there was a Zenbook Pro that did actually turbo. 

 

But eventually it had to settle at 3.0GHz

They didn’t skimp on heatsink size. If you take a look at the internals they can’t physically fit a larger heatsink or squeeze in a larger fan. Any improvements in cooling would’ve required increased thickness which Apple has never believed in and will most definitely not roll back to the older rMBP dimensions just for a chillier i9.

They did skimp on it precisely because of the machine's size. 

 

Had it not been made so thin, there's a good chance a beefier cooler could be added that also cools the VRMs. It doesn't have to be mega huge but I'd probably say right between the size of the 2008-2012 and 2012-2015 MBPs

 

It won't turbo all the way to 4.3GHz on all cores but it might be able to turbo a little longer, even at all

My MSI laptop tends to run hot under load too, but at least I have an "engage jet engine" option for extra cooling :P

They did skimp on the heatsink size because it's more like Apple would rather sacrifice function for form by forcing a CPU into a chassis that isn't adequate enough to handle an i9 that can run according to Intel's specs.

There isn't much excuse for it getting past engineering and testing other than Apple thinking they could sell it because most of their consumers don't know any better,aside from more cores and Ghz must be better, so why not pay extra over the i7 model. Apple claiming "whoops we forgot to add this magical software key" and people believe it's a fix despite it can't turbo much at all now. To be fair the Dell XPS does throttle to an extent, but nowhere nearly as bad as this dud of a laptop.

Actually, I just read up on the XPS15 throttling and apparently, some are so bad that the machine shuts itself off. 

 

Dell made the same sin as Apple; They didn't upgrade the cooling system. 

 

What makes this even more bizarre is that the XPS15 has VRM throttling and overheating issues for 3 years now. Dell knew but somehow, the cooling solution stayed the same? 

 

Good news is that at least for the 8750H, a -115mV undervolt gives around a 15% improvement in performance during Cinebench R15.

So then don't put a chip that the system can't cool properly.

You don't see Surface Pro with a GTX 1080 and a Core i9 for a reason.

 

And seeing how Microsoft was able to add a beefier heat sink solution to the Surface Pro while not increase the device size, or make it thicker, and still has all its original ports, and longer battery life, shows what some engineering magic can do, clearly Apple was not interested in.

I don't know about the i9 XPS, although we need to wait for benchmarks comparison to really know, especially from the same source.

Going with logic that, based on David Lee MacBook Pro Core i9 video, where the performance after the patch was similar performance to when he temporarily put his mac in the freezer to reduce temp before the patch, but still massacred by the think Gigabyte Aero 15X, you get much less performance, still, with the Core i9. (In his render test: Aero 15X got 7min to render his video, and the MacBook Pro in freezer got: ~27min). Of course, this is not set in stone as he didn't update his comparison with other i9 systems after the patch update.
